A few years later a pop band released a song that sounded almost identicle except they sang his notes instead of played them on a guitar. Its not like the music is different or its a sample in a hip hop song or something. They sound the same. Yet for some reason you think that's CRAZY!

I'm not so up to date with the whole Satch vs. Coldplay situation at the moment. I kinda lost interest awhile ago. However, I have to do a bit of debating for some of the courses I'm doing, so I may have some tips for ya. Firstly, when you're writing your points to defend your argument. You have to think about how someone might attack that. Pretend you're someone who is criticizing your points, and therefore you'll find the gaps in your argument where you need to edit them and make it stronger. This can also be useful to begin an argument. If you start a point by saying, "Many Satraini follows say that..." "...this cannot be true because..." or "..this is true to some extent, however..." When writing this out, remember that with a debatable situation like this, it may be difficult to find a certain right or wrong answer. As you can see even in this thread, it can lead to lots of pingpong-like arguements that go nowhere (thus why I lost interest). So this may be difficult to be persuasive as such. But, just look for certain facts and go for it. I could be rambling, but I hope there is something there that might be of any use to you. I'll come back to this thread to expand on more ideas, but I'm kinda tired now and that was all i could think of. I'm sure others will help you.

March 24, 200917 yr sorry to bring this thread to the top again, but i just found something very interesting and i'd love to hear what satriani and his fans would say about it: since you obviously don't believe in "coincidental similarities" how can you explain satriani's rip-off to pink floyd's "breathe"? the first 30 seconds of satriani's "i like the rain" are exactly the same of pf's and if anyone should be sued it gotta be this wanker! from the beginning coldplay has been absolutely honest to their fans and everyone, when a song is inspired by someone else's work they'll say that from the beginning, because they're unlike some very secure, confidince and honest and they sure didn't have to steal someone else's work like that because they were on the top already, so there's no reason to steal from guitar geeks such as our friend here

I listened. First its only two chords for 30 seconds and not nearly the entire hook of the song. Pink Floyd didn't invent a slow strum on reverb on clean guitar which is mostly what you think is the same. Floyd also picks all over it on the second chord with that falling note progression to totally change the groove of the song. So what you're complaining about is that for four chord strums Satriani used a technique taught to everyone using reverb on the planet. If Satriani took a nearly identical phrase/melody over identical (one is sonicly the same, the others are the same) chords that had the same groove from Floyd you'd have a point, but he didn't and Coldplay did. Point in case: The Coldplay song sounds exactly the same. I like rain sounds nothing like the Floyd song except for 4 chords of a standard rock progression and reverb. Uh yea,thats it.

Viva la Vida sounds nothing like the Satriani song except for 3 of 4 chords of a standard rock progression and a slightly similar, but clearly different melody.
