Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

Well, JS's fan community consists of every single credible musician alive. Or, if they're not fans they at least respect him. The same can NOT be said for Chris Martin no matter how many people who have no idea who one of the best guitar players of ALL TIME like him.

This sounds so utterly snobbish and outside the point. Chris Martin is a very talented songwriter whereas JS is a virtuoso guitarist. But an elitist fan community doesn't make his music better, by what I've heard between the two, I find Coldplay music to be much more creative and interesting in most respects. I see music more as the sum of its parts, and I guess that's why I'm on this forum. You clearly disagree, and I respect that. But it's rude to invade someone else's forum and bash their band as you already have.

Think about it. If there was no rip off why wouldn't they call him back and say "hey man, yea, its really close but its just one of those flukes in music. We are really sorry. How about you grace us at a show with your presence so you can tear it up on the guitar like none of us are capable of doing in the middle of the song?"

I thought the whole Satch article was B.S.. He was so intent on playing the victim card "It felt like a dagger in my heart!"

And he didn't even bring these allegations up until just before the Grammy's. And worse, he planned to have cronies ambush Coldplay on the red carpet with paperwork. The fact is Coldplay when through this same B.S. with creaky boards, and they shouldn't have to give a whole press conference everytime someone tries to take credit for the most popular song of 2008. If you saw the 60 minutes interview, Martin said "you can either give a ten minute speech on why we didn't steal anything, or just say 'no, we're sorry, but we didn't steal your song." (paraphrase) and that's what they said. Why? Probably because it's true.

BTW your arrogance is pervading even more. Thousands of people can shred on a guitar, but Van Halen would've been bigger than the Beatles if originality and creativity didn't matter. and "If I could fly" strikes me as utterly stale and uninspired in comparison.

Why are YOU posting on MY thread which is not pro coldplay if YOU think they are totally awesome and would never copy a note?

Last time I checked you DON'T own this site and I can post in every thread I want cuz I can do it, plus I ain't an attention seeker annoying noob.

If Coldplay copied Satch...

sigpic27800_34.gifsatchriddick.th.png

...then Satch copied Riddick!!

^That used to be my sig, still holds true

nicely said!! :D!!

and i don't get it.

maybe someone can help me out here.

why post a coldplay hating thread in a coldplay fansite? i... i just don't get it.

maybe it's time you move out of your mom's house, indiefan23.

I use indie to refer to bands signed to independent labels. I don't wear box frame glasses. I use it cuz I don't know how else to describe what I like.

right, and that's a perfectly legitimate way to use that word nowadays. I was just trying to clear up the meaning :)

Thanks!

*sigh*

I guess some people get so bored that they don't know what to do to fight boredom away.

I lol'd at the last thing you said!:laugh3:

Well, when you're the 20th person to create an account on this forum just to reiterate a list of unproven accusations, it helps to sound at least a little intelligent. The fact that you misspell the thread tells us that this guy 'might' be a moron.

Granted. Cept I'm not.

Satriani's riff starts with three notes in a different rythm to VLV's and then plays a bunch of notes that don't match up at all to the rest of Martin's melody before returning to the same three note figure. Play them on top of each other, and you'll see that Martin doesn't sing the anywhere near the same pattern throughout the whole verse, it's only the first part of the phrase that has any actual note-by-note similarity.

They don't line up? The chorus is the entire Coldplay song. Just because Satrani takes four bars to get to the part they repeat for the whole song does not mean its not ripped off.

Click out of whatever propaganda video you're watching and listen to both songs in their original context. In terms of instrumentation, arrangement, genre, length, structure etc. they're miles apart from one another. If you weren't scraping for notes you'd never think twice about comparing the two. A

Dude, you need to check your head. You can claim they didn't rip it off, but actually claiming they don't sound alike is plain dumb. I mean, length? Thats like saying a word for word poem you copied from Shakespeare is not plaugirzed(my word remember!) because you printed it on legal instead of standard 8.5/11 stock. Chris Martin sings the same notes Satriani plays with incredibly minor variations and thats a fact.

A case of possible plagiarism through general similarity would be between U2's "with or without you" and that linkin park song, or coldplay's "square one" and ashlee simpsons "eyes wide open. Those are cases where the latter artist is clearly imitating the former. Whereas no one listens to VLV and thinks "Coldplay totally stole Satch's song!

Thats because JS is not an MTV pop star and people with average music knowledge don't know who he is. JS is making art not selling it to a mainstream audience.

"now they're "almost" identical? I'm sorry I thought you said the entire verse was an exact copy. My bad. Only three of the four chords in the progression are the same"

Yes, and the other one is tonicly the same. I didn't say they duplicated his song, I said they plagurized (my word again) it.

"and who even thinks to imitate meter? As if the song is "that" different between 135 and 138. The tempos of both songs are very popular rock meter's and I assure you having the same tempo is no crime."

Well, when you copy the meter, and the melody and write a song that sounds the same cuz you heard it somewhere else its plagurism(my word). I don't know if they did hear it somewhere else and copied it but it sure sounds like they did to me. Only they know that though and categorically you do not. They're close enough that a copy is pretty likely.

Believe me, I've seen all the arguments but even some of those who do make the argument, much less the majority of music experts don't believe there is sufficient similarity for a lawsuit, or even that's it's anything more than a coincidence.

Lawsuit? Do you know how hard it is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt a musical rip off? Its nearly impossible because of that beyond a reasonable doubt thing. That does not mean they didn't rip him off. It doesn't mean they looked guilty as sin in avoiding him till he was forced to sue.

Sure you can, I'm not stopping you, but criticizing me for posting in your beloved Coldplay fan zone while posting in my anti-Coldplay thread makes you a hypocrite. We both are doing it for the same reasons.

Can a mod please just add this one to the JS thread so it can be with the rest of the annoying people that only make an account here to "enlighten" us?? :dozey:

You might wanna get your ears checked ...

At least I am posting in the right forum, posting about Coldplay since it's what mainly this forum is about, it aint about Coldplay haters.

Seriously I don't know what you're doing in here if you feel so disgusted at Coldplay's music and members.

EDIT: I second Pris' post.

You sir (or maam) are a fool. Do you actually think this dispute is news to us?There is insufficient evidence for a plagiarism suit, the two songs themselves are so distinctly different, that the idea it's absurd to think Chris Martin would even think to copy what he's been accused of. The melodies are in different parts of the song and clearly aren't the same. It's only three notes out of a long lick that satch plays, and Chris sings those notes in a very different rythm (try singing along to satch's riff...). Musically speaking, there's nothing suspicious or even unusual about that whatsoever.

Next, it's idiotic to think there are "original" chord sequences to be had in music nowadays. If you did the research you'd find hundreds of songs if not thousands of songs with the same four chords, and in this case they don't even have THAT in common. (plus the actual chords of "if I could fly" are not as audible as they are in "Viva la vida", and it's insulting to suggest that any artist, especially one as talented, esteemed and prolific as Chris Martin would have trouble putting four measly chords together, and would stoop to copying some song I'm sure he hadn't even heard.

In any case, the whole allegation is ridiculous and the similarities, entirely coincidental.

So indiefan23, who do you listen to?

Yo, I listen to lots of stuff. Umm... a cornucopia of my favorites is, uh, I'm gonna throw in a bunch of HFX flava just 4 u, I got my music education when that scene was bumpin:

Pavement

Guided By Voices

Modest Mouse

Slayer

Thrush Hermit

Superfriendz/Flashing Lights/Matt Murphy

Hardship Post

North Of America, best hfx band ever

The Plan, or maybe best hfx band ever, is there a difference?

The Holy Shroud

Local Rabbits

Special Noise (do they have a new CD?)

SS Cardiacs (when the special noise drummer and that bass guy are with her)

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

The Blood Brothers

Sonic Youth

Sloan (though, u know, I don't like to say sloan for HFX)

The Boredoms

Les Savy Fav

J to the ROC (know 'em sayin? his one song performance is one of the best things I've seen at the Para uh, Marquee)

Plaskett, HFX's certifiable indie god if there is one

Ween, god damn I love Ween

Q And Not You

White Stripes, cuz Jack is a global indie rock god

Radiohead

Muse

Bloc Party

The Pixies, easily one of my fav

Okay, enough, thats off the top of my head. Do you play in a HFX band? I looked at your list. Yay!

Only the best musician of our time! Joe Satriani. :laugh3:

EDIT: To be honest that song sounds a lot like some early Santana. In fact, the theme sounds very similar to his guitar in "Wind".

I agree there, except that Satriani's guitars are always a little uh, big and brighter... Santana's thinner and more bodied. I really prefer Santana... he can't shred but Satriani lacks soul and grit. That's the prob with people who spend all their time trying to play fast. Gots to balance that shiz.

maybe it's time you move out of your mom's house, indiefan23.

Wow, regarding plagurism (my word) it looks like you just copied about a half billion people on the internet. Way to knock it out of the park.

You can't even get "your word" right, but i gotta listen to your "knowledge" on this matter??

Can a mod please just add this one to the JS thread so it can be with the rest of the annoying people that only make an account here to "enlighten" us?? :dozey:

Nope, I invented another one! Brand new worde! Woah, another!

Thats because JS is not an MTV pop star and people with average music knowledge don't know who he is. JS is making art not selling it to a mainstream audience.

Excuse me?! Did you just really call Coldplay mainstream?:dozey:

I don't think they are "mainstream" at all, VLV isn't a mainstream song, it just was a big hit. And they totally deserved that:smug:

Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears are mainstream, with their crappy mainstream music..

But hey.. I guess there are still idiots in this world:rolleyes: You just actually "plagurized" my little brother by using your "made-up-words".. I think I'm gonna sue you

Edit: So indiefan.. You don't even listen to JS? Since it's not in your "precious" list

*high five*

You know what's never made sense to me? Why do people say they like to listen to "indie" as a genre of music? "Indie" just refers to the fact that a given band is signed to an independent label, right? So how do the size and the nature of the record label have anything to do with how the music sounds?

Well, SwallowedInSea(men) (my apology, could not be helped and won't happen again. :) ).

I don't think its really a genre of music, but I do think being signed to an independent label affects the sound of the music. Major labels have one goal: selling lots of records and making money. They are big enough that they don't actually 'need' any of the artists they sign. When they sign a band they usually do it when they're small. So, the label owns everything the band produces and holds all the cards.

So what happens when the major label's producer for their new band's says 'you know what, I don't like the song this way, you'll have to change it." The band can say no, and the major will say 'okay, well we already own all your songs and you owe us for the use of our studios, the advance we gave you and the legal fees we've sepnt on you, so you can pay us back with nothing to make money with or go bankrupt and start over from scratch." Well, bands often choose option 2 which is change their sound to what the label wants and take it in the bum so they can continue to exist as a band.

What they lose is control of their music and they are not really artists anymore but creative pawns of the label. Independent labels do this too, but tend to be more about the art then making music to sell millions of copies. Indie labels often need their band's a little more and are not as adept at or motivated to manipulating/screwing their artists over.

It makes a big massive difference, if you care about what you listen to every day.

Not even going to waste my time with this thread. Coldplay didn't steal shit.

I do, but he's not cracking that list or even coming close. Joe is a phenomenal talent and writes some fantastically brilliant songs, but hey, I have high standards. Joe's ability alone prolly out does almost all of them and most of them combined, but he's no where near my favourite artist.

Funny how you quoted MY post and not the original one

Not even going to waste my time with this thread. Coldplay didn't steal shit.

Yet you have no evidence to support that other then them claiming they didn't. The songs sound undeniably similar and have the same notes. I wonder what you know that I don't.
