Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

Hey, I've been traveling. I dunno, Coldplay are pretty cowardly when they just ignored him till he was going to embarrass them at the Grammys. I mean, if it was just some tiny band but Satriani is a legendary artist.

And its not like its a stretch... its a blatent copy.

Its just weak. Boo Chris Martin! Boo!

Thats ok, its been news for a while, you see.

Solution: Let's just call it a coincidence, and we can all go and enjoy a nice pot of tea.

I used to love this song but its obvious Coldplay are not the artists we thought they were!

You sir (or maam) are a fool. Do you actually think this dispute is news to us?There is insufficient evidence for a plagiarism suit, the two songs themselves are so distinctly different, that the idea it's absurd to think Chris Martin would even think to copy what he's been accused of. The melodies are in different parts of the song and clearly aren't the same. It's only three notes out of a long lick that satch plays, and Chris sings those notes in a very different rythm (try singing along to satch's riff...). Musically speaking, there's nothing suspicious or even unusual about that whatsoever.

Next, it's idiotic to think there are "original" chord sequences to be had in music nowadays. If you did the research you'd find hundreds of songs if not thousands of songs with the same four chords, and in this case they don't even have THAT in common. (plus the actual chords of "if I could fly" are not as audible as they are in "Viva la vida", and it's insulting to suggest that any artist, especially one as talented, esteemed and prolific as Chris Martin would have trouble putting four measly chords together, and would stoop to copying some song I'm sure he hadn't even heard.

In any case, the whole allegation is ridiculous and the similarities, entirely coincidental.

In the other the whole melody is exactly the same over the exact same rhythm.

Guess again. Or rather listen again, as that's simply untrue. In any case Enanitos Verdes had the same melody before Satch, and I'm sure he's not the first...7 notes can only have so many variations...

It's plagiarizing. Come on, at least spell it right in the thread title.

maybe he's stealing someone else's spelling that he likes better :D

I don't care about this at all.

Plus this is the wrong section of the forum.

maybe he's stealing someone else's spelling that he likes better :D

Nope, its my spelling. I'm original like that. 'cuse me for not spell checking.

Idiotic? I don't think so. Its not chord sequences, its the entire verse of the song copying the notes and phrases of Satriani's guitar with Martin's voice. Actually stating that theres no similarities is, I don't know what I'd call that... the Coldplay song sounds like the first part of Satriani's song repeated over and over about 30 times.

The meter is exactly the same and the chord progression is the same. Also the way the melody matches the meter and progression is the same. And its more then 3 notes. The song is in a different key, but the notes are almost identical.

I did do research: check this out... its the same.

I think you should PM all your top notch research to this man because he will help you in your quest.

*edit....OMG Brigs, your personal page looks like the Easter bunny threw up. :laugh3:

Oh damn! You discovered Coldplay's dark secret!

I guess our only recourse is to commit honorable suicides!

this man[/url] because he will help you in your quest.

I'm not sure what he can say... did you look at the music? Its nearly identical and not just a few similar chords. Its the same chords, notes and phrases. If they didn't copy him why did they totally avoid Satriani and his lawyers till he was going to embarrass him? He tried to multiple times with no responses.

Haha, yup. It is perhaps the most blinding page on this site, and I have a hard time looking at it.

But nice analogy, I like that :P

(one member called me a homosexual and claimed that I didn't know anything about music based on the page....and he was serious)

Well, I dunno. I'm probably not buying another Coldplay CD. I despise cowardice.

I used to love this song but its obvious Coldplay are not the artists we thought they were!

Oh my.... poor JS! Let's all feel a bit bad for him please!

Coldplay guys are sooo bad they must be :whip:.... for being really bad ppl!

These are SO big and I have NEVER heard about this.... I've been living inside a bubble.

[/sarcasm]

What makes you think we care for JS? We don't care if he's a "legendary" artist (like you named him, so legendary that I had never heard his name till he wanted to sue Coldplay) or if he is some random no one artist wannabe. He's been behaving like a 4 year old kid who feels angry cuz his song wasnt that well known all over the world like VLV.... tell him to get over it!

What's with the Boo Chris Martin Boo! how old are you? 4 too? Do you think they care if you say Boo to them, or do you think we care if you say boo to them? the New York Times gave them a tough review with X&Y and they didn't quit or anything so I don't think your 'BOO' is gonna make them feel bad or anything.

And just so you know.... this is a Coldplay fans community, if you feel they are such bad people I don't understan what are YOU doing posting in a forum or a really bad band... are you that bored or JS doesn't even have a fans community?

So if you came here to try to make us see how bad our fav band is and how depressed and sad JS might be feeling... guess what? you've FAILED! If you make researches like you say you do, you might know by now that these are OLD news, you seem kinda lost seriously.

So indiefan23, who do you listen to?

Only the best musician of our time! Joe Satriani. :laugh3:

EDIT: To be honest that song sounds a lot like some early Santana. In fact, the theme sounds very similar to his guitar in "Wind".

You know what's never made sense to me? Why do people say they like to listen to "indie" as a genre of music? "Indie" just refers to the fact that a given band is signed to an independent label, right? So how do the size and the nature of the record label have anything to do with how the music sounds?

Wow, you have an amazing argument. I have never heard of such a great argument before. You have really opened my eyes. I have now seen the light.

(I don't particularly feel the need to explain why you are wrong because besides the fact that I do not really care anymore, that seems to have already been taken care of.)

So indiefan23, who do you listen to?

Oooh, you put a Hey Rosetta! site link in your signature. Nice.

Exactly! You are correct. That never made sense to me either... People can be so dumb about that.

When I think of indie I usually associate it with a male singer who has a sort of high-pitched voice, like Death Cab for Cutie. Also it looks like their mom dressed them before they went out on the stage.

"Indie" has lost its original, more technical meaning which you mention here. It no longer means "signed to an independent label" necessarily though it might still indicate that. More importantly, "Indie Rock" has now become a stylistic marker. It usually refers to what is also known as "Art Rock", though the meaning is kind of vague to me. It does seem to get thrown around without being defined.

Nope, its my spelling. I'm original like that. 'cuse me for not spell checking.

Well, when you're the 20th person to create an account on this forum just to reiterate a list of unproven accusations, it helps to sound at least a little intelligent. The fact that you misspell the thread tells us that this guy 'might' be a moron.

Idiotic? I don't think so. Its not chord sequences, its the entire verse of the song copying the notes and phrases of Satriani's guitar with Martin's voice.

Satriani's riff starts with three notes in a different rythm to VLV's and then plays a bunch of notes that don't match up at all to the rest of Martin's melody before returning to the same three note figure. Play them on top of each other, and you'll see that Martin doesn't sing the anywhere near the same pattern throughout the whole verse, it's only the first part of the phrase that has any actual note-by-note similarity.

Actually stating that theres no similarities is, I don't know what I'd call that... the Coldplay song sounds like the first part of Satriani's song repeated over and over about 30 times.

Click out of whatever propaganda video you're watching and listen to both songs in their original context. In terms of instrumentation, arrangement, genre, length, structure etc. they're miles apart from one another. If you weren't scraping for notes you'd never think twice about comparing the two. A

A case of possible plagiarism through general similarity would be between U2's "with or without you" and that linkin park song, or coldplay's "square one" and ashlee simpsons "eyes wide open. Those are cases where the latter artist is clearly imitating the former. Whereas no one listens to VLV and thinks "Coldplay totally stole Satch's song!

The meter is exactly the same and the chord progression is the same. Also the way the melody matches the meter and progression is the same. And its more then 3 notes. The song is in a different key, but the notes are almost identical.

now they're "almost" identical? I'm sorry I thought you said the entire verse was an exact copy. My bad. Only three of the four chords in the progression are the same, and who even thinks to imitate meter? As if the song is "that" different between 135 and 138. The tempos of both songs are very popular rock meter's and I assure you having the same tempo is no crime.

I did do research: check this out... its the same.

javascript:newPopup('http://www.creativeguitarstudio.com/satch_coldplay/melody_comparison.html');

Believe me, I've seen all the arguments but even some of those who do make the argument, much less the majority of music experts don't believe there is sufficient similarity for a lawsuit, or even that's it's anything more than a coincidence.

The irony here is that Coldplay frequent jokes about "ripping" off various artists (mind you they never actually do) even when you'd never think to compare them. For example "Speed of sound" with the beat from Kate Bush's 'running up that hill", or "Lost!" being their own take on a Blur song. And when they arranged "talk" they sent a polite letter to Kraftwerk, asking if they could use the riff. So believe me, if Coldplay plagiarized ANYONE, they'd be the first to tell you.

What makes you think we care for JS? We don't care if he's a "legendary" artist (like you named him, so legendary that I had never heard his name till he wanted to sue Coldplay) or if he is some random no one artist wannabe.

So... What you're saying is that Coldplay fans are musicly ignorant? Okay...

What's with the Boo Chris Martin Boo! how old are you? 4 too? Do you think they care if you say Boo to them, or do you think we care if you say boo to them?

Judging from the tone of your post I would say you do care. Boo to you!

And just so you know.... this is a Coldplay fans community, if you feel they are such bad people I don't understan what are YOU doing posting in a forum or a really bad band...

Uh, cuz I feel like it, and I can, so I am. I will not eat green eggs and ham!

Be serious, this is the worst argument in the history of the internet. I'm here cuz I thought it was interesting 'n I'm not going to talk about Coldplay on a JS forum where everyone will agree with me or on a Slayer forum where everyone just thinks Coldplay sucks hairy ass. Why are YOU posting on MY thread which is not pro coldplay if YOU think they are totally awesome and would never copy a note?

are you that bored or JS doesn't even have a fans community?

Well, JS's fan community consists of every single credible musician alive. Or, if they're not fans they at least respect him. The same can NOT be said for Chris Martin no matter how many people who have no idea who one of the best guitar players of ALL TIME like him.

So if you came here to try to make us see how bad our fav band is and how depressed and sad JS might be feeling... guess what? you've FAILED! If you make researches like you say you do, you might know by now that these are OLD news, you seem kinda lost seriously.

Well, next time I make researches I'll be sure to come back. I don't think Joe "master of his craft and certifyable guitar legend" Satriani's feeling is really sad, more like, angry that a pop band has taken his work and bastardized it, masqueraded it as their own work and then refused to return his calls when he tried to talk to them about it.

Think about it. If there was no rip off why wouldn't they call him back and say "hey man, yea, its really close but its just one of those flukes in music. We are really sorry. How about you grace us at a show with your presence so you can tear it up on the guitar like none of us are capable of doing in the middle of the song?"

"Indie" has lost its original, more technical meaning which you mention here. It no longer means "signed to an independent label" necessarily though it might still indicate that. I use indie to refer to bands signed to independent labels. I don't wear box frame glasses. I use it cuz I don't know how else to describe what I like.

So... What you're saying is that Coldplay fans are musicly ignorant? Okay...

We ignorant? hahaha you don't even know how to spell plagiarism... that sounds IGNORANT to me, and I said I didn't know how he was, I NEVER said we all didn't know who he is. You need some reading comprehending classes ME thinks.

Judging from the tone of your post I would say you do care. Boo to you!

Awww I got a boo, I am SO sad:rolleyes:

Uh, cuz I feel like it, and I can, so I am. I will not eat green eggs and ham!

:laugh3:

Wrong place to speak like that of Chris... still thinking you are LOST!

Well, next time I make researches I'll be sure to come back. You mean the attention seeker master JS.

Think about it. If there was no rip off why wouldn't they call him back and say "hey man, yea, its really close but its just one of those flukes in music. We are really sorry. How about you grace us at a show with your presence so you can tear it up on the guitar like none of us are capable of doing in the middle of the song?"

ROFL :laugh3:

That's the funniest thing I've read in such a long time! :laugh3:
