June 29, 200718 yr Bittersweet reunion for The Verve As every day brings news of yet another 1990s group reuniting in a blaze of publicity, Britpop fans are rejoicing at the announcement that the Verve are to make a comeback. The group, one of the most influential bands of the previous decade despite fracturing spectacularly 10 years ago just as they were poised for international fame, announced the decision on their website this week. The statement said four of the five original members were "getting back together for the joy of the music". The band were back in the studio last week recording tracks for an album due later in the year. They also announced a series of six dates kicking off in November. Tickets are due to go on sale next month. It follows a spate of high-profile reformations ranging from the Spice Girls and All Saints to indie favourites James, and balladeers Crowded House. But what makes the reunification of arguably the finest band to emerge from the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in recent decades even more surprising is the scepticism of front man Richard Ashcroft to the move. He told an interviewer this year: "You're more likely to get all four Beatles back on stage." One member of the original line-up who will not be present is guitarist and keyboardist Simon Tong. He is part of Damon Albarn's supergroup, the Good, the Bad and the Queen, with Paul Simenon of the Clash. The Verve formed while studying together at Winstanley College in 1989. They split in April 1999 by which time they had recorded three albums, the most successful of which was the landmark Urban Hymns. Written at the height of the band's highly publicised drug use, the first single taken from the album was Bitter Sweet Symphony. A huge commercial success, it made number two in Britain and cracked the US top 20. But even the most ardent Verve fan had to admit it paid more than a passing resemblance to an orchestrated version of the famous riff from The Last Time, originally recorded by the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra but made famous by the Rolling Stones. The Verve yielded victory in court to the Stones' former manager Allen Klein, giving up all publishing royalties and were later sued by Loog Oldham for £1 million ($2.6 million). The band claim never to have made any money from the grim paean to life in a northern town, which also featured in a number of commercials and a film, against their will. They eventually sought to prevent the further distribution of the track. However, it was resurrected for a high-profile outing at 2005's Live8 concert, where Ashcroft sang to the backing of Coldplay. Aschcroft embarked on a solo career following the break-up of the Verve, with three albums and a clutch of singles to his name. Despite critical success many feel he failed to live up to the promise of the mid-1990s. This year, Bitter Sweet Symphony was named as the track which most typifies the Blair years. It beat competition from Robbie Williams, Oasis, Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs and the Arctic Monkeys in a poll by Radio Five Live listeners. - INDEPENDENT http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1501119/story.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=10448498

November 4, 200718 yr The Verve make triumphant live return First show for nine years features classics, rarities and one new song... The Verve played their first show in almost a decade tonight (November 2) at Glasgow Academy. The gig saw the original line-up of Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Pete Salisbury onstage together for the first time since May 1998, when they played Haigh Hall, Wigan. During a 90-minute performance, the band, who reformed in June 2007, stormed through a 17-song set that included classics such as 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' and 'The Drugs Don't Work', as well as one genuine rarity in the shape of 'This Is Music' B-side, 'Let The Damage Begin'. There was no support act, and Instead DJs played ahead of the hugely in-demand show - with tickets trading on online auction sites for £250 a pair before the show. The band took to the stage to the strains of 1960s maverick David Axelrod's 'Holy Are You' (a track that frontman Richard Ashcroft re-recorded with the composer) alongside a screen flashing up images that included Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and comedy character Reginald Perrin, as well as snippets of the band's lyrics. As the band strode on, the shamanic Ashcroft moved to the mic and announced, "This is music!" to cacophonous yelps, introducing their single of the same name. It was a night that saw little said from the stage. At one point Ashcroft announced simply that it was great to be back in Glasgow after nine years, although physically The Verve looked to have changed little. Any thoughts that animosity lingered between Ashcroft and his foil Nick McCabe were extinguished early on when, in a simple gesture, the frontman urged the crowd to applaud the guitarist during his first solo of the night. The band also unveiled one new song. Seven tracks into the gig Ashcroft announced, "We're gonna try something new here", then apologised for singing from a sheet of paper. Entitled 'Sit And Wonder', the new song was driven by a rumbling bassline, and was reminiscent of The Stone Roses second album. Lyrics included: "I should have warned her/I'd fall to pieces". The band were also making spontaneous changes during the performance. At one point Ashcroft, McCabe and Jones huddled together at the left of the stage, before deviating from the planned setlist and unveiling a storming version of the title track from second album 'A Northern Soul'. Conversely, new song 'Appalachian Springs' and classics 'Gravity Grave' and 'History' were on the pre-printed setlist, but were left out. The Verve finished their set with a massive 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' before returning for a three track encore, that began with a spellbinding version of fan favourite 'Man Called Sun'. The band play the same venue tomorrow (November 3) before heading to Blackpool Empress Ballroom (November 5 & 6) and London Roundhouse (November 8 & 9). They then embark upon a sold out arena tour in December. The Verve played: 'This is Music' 'Sonnet' 'All In The Mind' 'Weeping Willow' 'Life's An Ocean' 'Space And Time' 'Sit And Wonder' (New Song) 'Velvet Morning' 'Already There' 'Let The Damage Begin' 'A Northern Soul' 'The Drugs Don't Work' 'The Rolling People' 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' 'Man Called Sun' 'Lucky Man' 'Come On' http://www.nme.com/news//32274

November 5, 200718 yr Anyone else going to the Blackpool gig tonight or tomorrow? I'll be there tomorrow. would love to go, but i cant....... :bigcry: guess i have to wait till they come to germany. hope you have a great time at the gig (pretty sure you will). :) found the new track they played in glasgow on youtube: (sit and wonder) the recording isnt very good, but you can hear that it is a great song!! cant wait for the album.
November 8, 200718 yr Woah that was one of the best gigs ever. Don't believe the crap reviews saying rubbish like 'Richard and Nick hardly looked at each and were very awkward' and 'they were going through the motions', it was one of the most intense, mind blowing gigs I've ever been to. Richard on numerous occasions pointed at Nick and bigged him up and clapped him, kind of like how Chris does to Jonny! Si was off his head, smiling for the whole night, getting the crowd going, arms in the air, clenched fists, shouting, Nick was smiling a lot too, as if in disbelief that The Verve were actually on a stage again, Richard was loving it. He didn't say much in between songs, he let the music do the talking, which was out of this world. Pete was amazing on drums, just totally incredible. It was my first time seeing The Verve as I was too young to appreciate music back in the day, but I've seen Richard Ashcroft a few times as a 'solo artist' and he got me into The Verve obviously and, woah, I'm rambling, it was excellent basically. I'm going to the Manchester gig next month too so anyone that is a bit unsure whether or not to go incase they think it's just another Spice Girls-esque reunion then I urge you to definitely go and see this band live, they are mindblowingly good - something for everyone: physchadelic what the hell is going on kinda stuff, sing ya heart out anthems, the odd slow one which makes all the huge 6ft fellas burst out crying and proper rocking out tunes. Let the damage begin.
November 10, 200718 yr thanks for the review! hope i will see them soon. will be a dream come true! posted links for the blackpool (6th november) show in the "other bands mp3 thread" what a gig!!!
