that being said, i realize this might be a bit hypocritical because of what i just said, but every time i hear the line from glass of water that says 'cling to the mast, spend your whole life living in the past' i get sort of annoyed because i don't think living in the past is necessarily the best advice. i don't know, i might be misinterpreting what he is saying, but shouldn't we be urged to live in the present?

lol. I'm pretty sure he's saying not to live in the past. Its not a command, its a statement or an accusation. If you recall the last line of the chorus is 'going nowhere fast...'

Yes, he says we should not live in the past.

I seriously think it's more of an accusation and more of an angry song than most people think it is

I'm a huge Coldplay fan, I've never found a problem with any of their lyrics except one. "You cut me down a tree and brought it back to me, and that's what made me see where I was going wrong" from Swallowed in the Sea. When I heard that I was like "How the hell does a tree....O_o? Haha.

Joke I thought of;

What If there was no light?

Then everything would be dark.

Fail.

:laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3: you mae my day :D

ok i think that most of the lyrics that you guys have posted do make sense.. you want simple on the surface lyrics go listen to some sappy love music that says the same thing over and over. "girl I love you ... you are the one.. i would die without you ... I'd never breathe again... no air"..... whatever.....you need to really listen to the songs and not take the words literally and then you'll get the meanings. to me they all amke sense......... at least the ones I know

That was good :D

BRILLIANT! :D

Well, if you do indeed think critically, then you are one of a very, very small number of people who appear to find absolutley nothing critical to say about any of Coldplay's lyrics. I think it takes real fans to highlight the bands weaknesses as well as it's strengths.

I think you're just talking nonsense pal. Everyone’s got their own individual opinion on Coldplay and whether to be critical or not on their lyrics is their choice, and not yours my friend. And please don’t talk about real fans! I’ve had the blessing to listen to their music before the parachute days! I know them inside out and only cuz I don’t post here everyday of the week highlights my busy lifestyle, not my laziness or lack of interest in the band. And let me tell you, I enjoy every line of every lyric of every one of their songs and find them meaningful and inspiring. Now does that not make me a “real fan”?! Bollocks!

Can we please STOP with these Coldplay/Chris bashing threads? This is a Coldplay appreciation forum.

Thanks.

I see nothing wrong with appreciating a band but at the same time not liking a few things about them. I think that in order to really like a band, or anything for that matter, you also need to see the bad things. And as much as I love Coldplay, I don't like some of their lyrics, such as the entire Speed of Sound.

I love Coldplay AND Chris Martin, but he's got to work on the lyrics a bit. For example, I consider "X&Y" their best work. But some of the lyrics make me go: . Why? Because I have to hear "if you never try then you'll never know" on almost every track. I skip to "What If", I get: "How can you know if you don't even try?". I skip to "Fix You", I get: "But if you never try you'll never know". I skip to "Speed of Sound", I get: "If you never try then you'll never know". So surely you can see my point. "If you never try, you'll never know" is the worst Coldplay lyric ever.

"I don't want to cycle or recycle revenge"

what? I mean I love Chris and all, but I don't even understand what that means :inquisitive:

or "It was all yellow"

Yeah, it's a pretty catchy song but it doesn't really mean anything.

Actually it's "I don't want a cycle of recycled revenge" and it totally make sense to me. But even if i love Yellow, i agree "It was all yellow" doesn't mean anything.

Can I just say, that as a book nerd, that I love the ambiguity of the lyrics?

To me the fact that none of it makes much sense is what makes it so amazing.

It also keeps the majority from applying it all to the same situation in life, because most of the songs you can't simply classify under 'happy' or 'breakup.'

But the only Coldplay song I cannot listen to for my life: A Spell A Rebel Yell...WTF? :dead:

Well obviously if Chris says that, that many times then he means business. I mean he does have a point, If you never try you'll never know.

WA WA WA WA WA

PARA PARA

I think you forget ohoh ohohoh and lalalalalalala lalalalalalala lalalalala

Oh, yes, indeed

Is it really Wa-wa-wa-wa though? I know it's written that way on the website but it sounds like its just waaaaaaaaaaaterfall.

Even though it's written as so on their site, it definitely sound anything like it. To me, it sounds like: "It was a wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-waterfall!".

I don't really like Up In Flames' lyrics. The chorus is just boring: " up in flaaaameeeeess, up in flaaameeess, up in flaameeeesss..."

This.

The song is great live, but it's dull on the album.

And the way Chris sings Can we pour some water on.. It's so..Ugh.
