Ouch! Walcott left out of England squad

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott is the surprise omission from England's 23-man World Cup squad, BBC Sport understands. Walcott, 21, was in the provisional squad of 30 and started both of England's recent friendly victories against Mexico and Japan.

But Chelsea's Joe Cole has been included in the final squad, which flies to South Africa on Wednesday. Gareth Barry had a fitness test on his injured ankle on Tuesday morning with initial report sounding favourable.

P.S. I was born there:P and I want to see them do well as everyone sort of doesn't take them that seriously.

not that many American posts in this thread, are the US actually bothered about the World Cup?

Heskey seriously lol

I want to know where is the wishing well where he makes he wishes to be in the England squad.

not that many American posts in this thread, are the US actually bothered about the World Cup?

yesh. Greatest sport event ever. (and there are plenty of american posts in this thread)

Exactly! http://search.twitter.com/search?q=heskey

Rene Higuita (GK) - 68 caps 8 goals // Jose Luis Chilavert (GK) - 74 caps 8 goals // Emile Heskey (FWD) - 58 caps 7 goals

:laugh3:

Hahaha! That's brilliant.

However, Heskey is great at holding the ball up, being selfless, and creating chances for other players. So I'm guessing Capello's tactic is for Heskey to create 10 assists completely to Rooney.

Crouch's record is incredible, but he'll never score in a game that's actually important.

Surprised that Guiseppe Rossi got left out.

I'm not sure as I've never been over there at the time of a World Cup to gauge atmosphere but I know plenty of Americans who are interested in the World Cup yes.

LMFAO there is a group in facebook where they show you a nostradamus prediction... their interpretation is that mexico will win this world cup lolz.... what pathetic inspirations instead of saying something like mexico will arise and become a powerful economy.

I wish I followed Futbol more, I just hate all of the acting that goes on during the game and how unbelievably low scoring it tends to be.

Go Brazil!

For those Heskey haters out there - WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FUCKING COFFEE! YES HE DOESN'T SCORE GOALS BUT HE IS ABLE TO EXTRACT THE MAXIMUM OUT OF WAYNE ROONEY WHO NEEDS TO BE ON HIS GAME IF YOU ENGLISH ARE TO HAVE ANY CHANCE OF WINNING THE WORLD CUP! HE CHESTS THEM DOWN FOR WAYNE, HE HEADS THEM DOWN FOR WAYNE HE PASSES THEM OVER TO WAYNE!

He is useless at scoring but is a crucial component in balancing that side. Peter Crouch does it pretty well but doesn't bring in other players nearly as much as Heskey does but the thing that works in Crouch's favour is that he scores goals and lots of them as well. But Heskey is the most likely to get the most out of the surrounding players and that's why he should start for England.

Also if England are to win the World Cup they need to sort out the defence. Some outsiders will look and say 'the English have the strongest defence! No problems there'. It's not down to a major tactical error but mostly all down to individual errors. They will have their work cut out if they are to resemble and perform like the England defence from 2001-2004. Remember Euro 2004. Campbell, Cole and Neville were quite outstanding in that tournament and likewise World Cup 2002, Ferdinand and Campbell were just awesome. England desperately need a player the likes of Sol Campbell at the top of his game again. Simply one of the best defenders I have ever seen in my life. A tribute to Sol!

p.s - I think it'd be best to drop either Terry or Johnson for Carragher. A much better defence organiser than the rest in that team.

World Cup 2010: Rio Ferdinand out of England squad

England captain Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 31-year-old centre-back had a scan after hurting his left knee following a challenge with Emile Heskey during Friday's first training session.

He emerged from hospital on crutches and Tottenham's Michael Dawson, who had been put on standby, is expected to fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours.

Vice-captain Steven Gerrard will step up to lead the side at the World Cup.

Didier Drogba doubt for World Cup after fractured elbow

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba's participation in the World Cup is in serious doubt after he suffered a fractured elbow in a friendly.

The Chelsea striker, 32, picked up the injury 16 minutes into the game after clashing with Japan defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka. "It's a fracture in his arm. The doctor hasn't said yet whether he can play in the World Cup," said a team spokesman.

Ivory Coast kick off their World Cup campaign against Portugal on 15 June. "It's an elbow injury. How bad it is, I don't know. He had a lot of pain," said Ivory Coast boss Sven-Goran Eriksson. Of course I'm worried. He's captain and one of the world's best players."

Drogba, the Premier League's top goalscorer last season, helped open the scoring with a 13th-minute deflected free-kick and Ivory Coast went on to win the game 2-0 with Manchester City defender Kolo Toure also scoring.

England's World Cup dreams took a major blow today as captain Rio Ferdinand was rushed to hospital with a knee injury - and will now miss the tournament.

The 31-year-old Manchester United defender hobbled away from the pitch today after being hurt in a tackle at the team base during their first day of training.

The FA confirmed the news in a statement that read: 'England Captain Rio Ferdinand today suffered a left-knee ligament injury in training.

'Further to a scan arranged by the England medical staff immediately after training on Friday afternoon, Rio has been ruled out for four to six weeks and will therefore unfortunately miss the World Cup.

'Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Dawson has been contacted today and will fly to South Africa on Friday evening.

'Steven Gerrard will lead the England team as captain in the tournament.

England Manager Fabio Capello said: 'It is obviously bad news and everyone with the squad is very disappointed and sorry for Rio.

'It was an accidental injury in training, but had nothing to do with the pitch.'

It also appears Didier Drogba will miss the World Cup after breaking his right arm today in a warm-up match.

The 32-year-old player was taken off 15 minutes into Ivory Coast's 2-0 win over Japan after a high challenge by Japan defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka. He was then rushed to a hospital.

Team spokesman Eric Kacou told reporters that'it is a fracture in his right arm', but coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said the team hadn't officially ruled its captain out. 'We are not sure yet,' Eriksson said, saying Drogba's participation was 'still a possibility'.

As Ferdinand left hospital on crutches after a scan on his left knee, England manager Fabio Capello called up Tottenham’s Michael Dawson who was on emergency standby.

He is now on his way to South Africa where he will take Ferdinand's place in the 23-man squad.

Earlier, Capello told a press conference: 'The bad news is Rio suffered a problem with the knee. He has just gone to hospital for a scan.

'We hope it will not be so bad an injury but we have Michael Dawson on call.'

Two of the four players (Rooney, Walcott, Milner and Ferdinand) featured on this Nike billboard in West London are no longer in the running to represent England at the World Cup. Walcott, second from left, didn't make the team and Ferdinand, far right, is now out after a knee injury

He said the skipper hurt his knee during the final minutes of England's first major training session since arriving in South Africa yesterday.

The loss of the captain is a huge blow to the team’s hopes in South Africa. It would have been his fourth World Cup and he has vast experience to call upon.

England's first game against the USA is in eight days, but another player can be drafted into the squad if necessary. Vice Captain Steven Gerrard will replace Ferdinand as captain.

Dawson, who had an outstanding season at Spurs, was named in Capello's initial party of 30 for the finals but was excluded from the final 23.

Ferdinand had been optimistic of enjoying an injury-free World Cup after a season dogged by problems at Manchester United.

He made just 21 appearances for his club this season, starting only 13 Premier League games, in a season disrupted by a back injury.

He is not the only injury to hit the squad.

Goalkeeper David James did not train today because of a knee injury aggravated by the long flight from London.

Mr Capello said: 'David James had a little problem with the knee but not such

a big problem.'

Theo Walcott was dropped from the team after Mr Capello said his shoulder injury had affected his game, and David Beckham suffered an achilles injury earlier this year.

Ashley Cole now claims to be fit after breaking his ankle in February, while Wayne Rooney has been plagued with injuries - including hurting his neck during the team's recent friendly against Mexico.

The team are based in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is 70 miles from Johannesburg.
