A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.

Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash, but it is not yet known if anyone survived. The plane was reportedly heading to an airport in the western city of Smolensk when it crashed.

Mr Kaczynski was due to visit Smolensk to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviet troops killed thousands of Poles. The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT). Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said it had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk, but had no details on the identities of those killed.

The Polish Foreign Ministry said the president and his wife were aboard the plane, according to the Associated Press news agency.

Yeah, that wasn't nice news to wake up to...

It is one of the biggest tragedies in the history of Poland.

Not only the President died, but lots of other very important people in Poland.

I don't know what I should say. It's such a big tragedy.

It is not only the biggest tragedy in history of Poland, but in history of the world also.

Secretaries of State, generals, ambassador, representatives, bishops... all dead

It's really really sad.

I can't focus, I'm thinkig about it all the time.

it's very sad :( RIP

That's harsh.

A Dutch newspaper even reported that there were 132 people on the plane, no survivors. :\

That's not true. Russians made a mistake and told that there were 132 people, but there were about 88 + the plane crew.

It's horrible, I can't believe

Wow, that's really sad.

um

don't understand

Shocking news when I heard it earlier.

um

Agreed.

I'm sure the "is" is just a spelling mistake.

It was and i've already corrected it.

Actually, I heard someone took all the presidents obligations, but next elections are like 74 (?) days from now. When I heard this I was in school (yes, on saturday), and we were so in shock, that we thought it's one big joke, but it unfortunetly wasn't. All of that is so strange...

The CEO of a monopoly security corporation died in a plane crash, along with a notorious counterfeiter. Not really feeling the warm glow from this one.

Along with the pilots and the many other people who weren't involved in such things and whose families now have to deal with the consequences of such a disaster. Wise up.
