I've always understood you aren't into it, because you don't see why the changing calendar would make a difference for you, but I don't really get anyone who doesn't understand how the start of a new year is the best time to commit to changing something in their life for a lot of people. I also don't make New Years resolutions but if there is going to be a time of the year to re-evaluate yourself, I certainly think January of a new year makes a lot more sense then some random date you'll forget. Some people need that kindof belief in organisation to make it clear in their own mind, eg- 2011, the year of no more _____.

 

I know it makes sense for some, but honestly it doesn't matter to me. I do understand why people do it, but for me it is just another day. When I want to do something I do it (without meaning to sound like an arrogant prick). When I lost weight this year I just decided one day, I didn't think 'oh well, give it till next week and then I'll do it'. I knew it needed changing so I changed it. If it is that important you will start right away. If it isn't then does it really matter that much to bother putting the effort into making a resolution. I know you understand that too, so we might as well drop.

 

I am however still confused that you found it funny that I said something along the lines of 'make changes when they need to be made'. I thought that is how everyone did things. Logically.

Well I guess that's what I was looking for, I didn't get how you couldn't understand how the New Year is a fresh slate for some people.

 

I am however still confused that you found it funny that I said something along the lines of 'make changes when they need to be made'. I thought that is how everyone did things. Logically.

 

Then why do people still smoke, or drink too much, and then say things like "I need to quit" or "I was way too drunk last night! NEVER AGAIN- but I'll say that next time haha". I think we all have little habits about ourselves we wish weren't there, whether it's procrastination, or for example I spend too much money on eating out, my point is that you, or anyone else, doesn't just automatically make changes as soon as they realise they should. You made a decision one day to lose weight, I'm assuming that wasn't the first day that you looked in the mirror and thought you needed to, it could've been going on for weeks or months as us humans naturally let it.

 

Now for some people, weight loss being an example, they see the New Year as a good time to start losing weight if they've been putting it off for months. When I read "make changes when they need to be made" I took it like, this person honestly thinks they ammend themselves as soon as they discover something about themself they don't like.

When I want to do something I do it (without meaning to sound like an arrogant prick). When I lost weight this year I just decided one day, I didn't think 'oh well, give it till next week and then I'll do it'. I knew it needed changing so I changed it.

 

I think it's the same thing for everyone. But the new year is a landmark in the calendar, and maybe people just "use it", even unconsciously, to do a kind of a balance sheet*, and realize what they need.

I don't think anybody would wait a new year to start something, that's just stupid!

Haha I doubt anyone would wait until the New Year to change something about themself, but just adding to why it's a good time, because Christmas/the holidays is generally a time of relaxing and not giving a fuck. No/less work, drinking and eating way more then usual, so the New Year is an appropriate time to re-evaluate everything.

It's a big deal to make resolutions I think for some people at that point in the year because with the old year ending and a new one starting people feel that the newness in something like the year is a chance to turn things around. I do agree that people can start giving up bad habits at any point in time and should. But it sort of makes sense how people would use the new year to organize things.

I think being aware of it is one thing.....actually doing it another one. I do actually doubt that you can just start a diet on the 1st of January 2011 if you couldn't do it on the 23rd of September 2010. I have tried that so many times before....not really setting a date, but saying "I really need to loose weight....I will start in a week"...it never worked....there is somethnig in your mind that needs to change. This is the key and nothing else....

 

I've been aware of being a bit too chubby for so many years and I have been talking of diets so so often and it never worked, because something in my mind must have blocked it......and then around 8 months ago it just happened....it is so stupid actually....because it was so easy in the end....

 

so if you've been putting it off for months before I don't really see a change if you wanna start on the 1st...

I make them, but only loosely, because I know I probably won't keep them. Keeping low expectations of myself makes for a pleasant surprise when I actually do commit to something :P

I always plan to make one, but then I forget about it by mid January. :shame:

 

I'm going to try this year, though!

I reflect a bit, try and make sense of things, and make some course adjustments. Then I return to routines, and live an imperfectly normal life.:laugh3:

Basically the ancient Scots were right - go visit a neighbor, bring them some bricks of peat, and down a shot of scotch whiskey together. Light up the night sky with a few rockets around midnight, wish your neighbor a good new year, sing the ancient ballad with a warm fire in the peat stove.

You can modernize this as you wish, but sing Auld Lang Syne and remember, it's all about sharing the memories, remembering the friendships, and singing in the new year!

The resolutions are for the resolute - just to be happy to have weathered the year's storms together is plenty in mid-winter - I'd save the resolutions for Ground Hog's Day.

^Judging by the double post, it sounds like you might have been affected by groundhog day yourself!:P

No resolution is needed for that, unless you happen to be a GaGa or Bieber fan................... :rolleyes:

i always made one and end not applying it for whatever reasons, so i prefer to not have big expectations for next year and just try to enjoy and learn whatever it'll bring. :)

 

anyways i'm trying to change my routine already. :P

-Stop spending time with people I don't really get on with because I feel like I should
