Can we stop judging bands by "X couldn't do an album by Y"? C'est nonsensical.

The Beatles didn't release a Kid A, Bowie didn't release an OK Computer, Radiohead didn't realease a Ziggy Stardust; all three are still quality despite this.

Omg this pls.

I mean if you guys know your bands so well, and what those albums represent for said bands (most successful, most innovative, most disappointing, whatever), then just use real words and adjectives, pls.

Not only does using other bands/artist's albums names to describe someone else's albums is, as Mark said, non sense, but honestly it also doesn't raise the discussion nor does it invite people to join the conversation, which is sad.

I mean, someone who doesn't know the entire discography of even the most famous bands in the world, enters the thread and reads something like "Coldplay's LP6 could definitely be their Ashtung Baby, but not in a Kid A way. I may see a White Album coming, tho" may think you have to get a degree in Music history in order to participate in a conversation which is basically saying "I'd like them to sound like something, use this kind of instrument, and I bet they'll go down this road, with this kind of spirit, maybe, I guess".

You don't have to explain everything to everyone, but you can at least use words and adjectives to make your statement clearer. Even people who know their thing might interpret your "this'll be Coldplay's In Rainbows" in a different way than you do.

And as Mark basically stated, David Bowie didn't do Radiohead's OK Computer, and you know why ? Because he's never been a member of Radiohead :cheesy:

/rant over

To follow on from Celine, maybe Coldplay don't want to produce the next OK Computer. Radiohead are considered geniuses, best band in the world etc, but Chris has always said that he loves pop music; he once claimed that a Katy Perry song was as good as Karma Police for different reasons.

He's not right or wrong, that's opinion. He wants his expression to reach as many people as possible, and not to be heckled at bus stops like Thom Yorke. There's nothing wrong with that, and if every band tried to be Radiohead, life would be pretty dull (not to mention cynical).

And one final point before I stop rambling, how many "this is our ____" records have been true masterpieces? How many masterpieces are good because they're unique? Think on that one.

Well, they're supposed to be pop-punk, and they're more pop than punk, as established, so where does that leave us?

I still wouldn't say they wee pop, because that's popular music. And judging by their recent chart positions, they are definitely not popular. Also, if you listen to their earlier stuff, you can easily tell it's not pop. I agree that they WERE more punk earlier on, but wanted UNO to be power-pop, DOS to be garage rock and TRE to be stadium rock. DOS is definitely garage rock, it's just like Green Day's side-project, Foxboro Hot tubs! :)

Also, even though power pop has the word 'pop' in it, it isn't popular really, it is mostly underground. It is described on Wikipedia as a mixture of hard rock and melodic pop.

Also, Jimmy Eat World's amazing single, The middle is considered power-pop,even though they are obviously pop punk or emo.

So did American idiot in 2004 and they were about 32 then which isn't that younger than coldplay are now. Also all of the five singles from that album got to 3 5 11 8 and 17 in the UK charts!!!!. The album sold 14 million copies in the world. :) go green day! :) :)

But I guess that's just your opinion :/ :)

What?

Also, I don't think you can get all your info on genres from wikipedia.

You do realize that you countered an opinion with your own opinion right?

Just checking.

I never said what I said was my opinion did I? The facts speak for themselves. The question is do Coldplay have the musical ability of The Beatles? No. End of discussion. Nothing to do with opinion.

That's just sidetracking the issue. The Beatles, Radiohead, Bowie's ability in making music is so far advanced from Coldplay it's laughable. They are more U2's level, if you take away Achtung Baby.

I want Coldplay to go away and come back in a few years and release a record which sounds nothing like anything in the charts. Let's see if they had the balls to do it. The best bands have.

What?

It's on the bands site too

Any way can we just end the green day discussion as this is about coldplays sixth album. I get that I started the green day thing by simply saying that they did a triple album, which was related to what everyone else was saying about a double album!! Green day are pop punk, punk, shit if you don't like them but just leave it at that.

Maybe because Green Day are too old to still be doing pop-punk?

Also, why does Green Day always get a mention as one of Coldplay's contemporaries?

And I'm just gonna point out that it doesn't matter what she you are, if your good at making music, you enjoy it and its you passion then what can't you do it till you die? Pop punk isn't just for younger bands. Green day have matured and have more genres under their belt. :/

Yes please.

Thank you. All this crap just escalated from me saying they did an album trilogy! Jeez

Coldplay's next album will be kinda Viva la Vida ish with like an MX thing but in a AROBTTH kind of way.

It's not sidetracking the issue at all; what you count to be true art someone else might count as being pretentious drivel. I've got friends who hate Radiohead; just because I think they're the greatest band ever, doesn't make them that to everyone else.

I'm not going to bother getting into "X is more technically gifted than Y", because that's not how good music is made. Paul McCartney for example, is not a good musician. Can't hold a note, often plays out of time, out of key or whatever. Happens to have written what I believe to be some of the best songs of all time.

You ended the Green Day discussion so I won't reply your points and open it up again but just a couple of things:

1. Chart positions are not a measure of quality.

2. If music has no ambition, there's nothing to drive it forward and nothing to excite fans.

Just two points to remember when looking forward to any band's new album.

Chart positions are not a measure of quality, I know that. But they are a measure of how well known and how well liked you are by your main audience.

And Green Day music DOES have ambition. Think about their album Dookie, a massive success, whereas its follow-up, Insomniac wasn't as much. Green Day had ambition and made their next album, Nimrod better. Then came Warning, which wasn't liked alot, so the band took a massive step and something never ever done before in the Punk genre: American Idiot, its sold 14 million copies worldwide and 10 million in the USA alone. It's also a musical, all of its five singles where in the top 20, and it has a plot. Green day obviously still weren't 100 % happy, so they came back with 21st Century Breakdown - Their most commercially successful album ever!

End of discussion.

I did stop the discussion, you know. So I don't reeally get why you put that

I did stop the discussion, you know. So I don't reeally get why you put that

Because you keep posting about them!

Sorry but I only post about them because certain individuals just don't get what I'm saying. I wouldn't even have to be saying all this now if someone didn't say 'what are green day said to be coldplays contemporary?' When they're at the same time. And triple album achievements link in with double albums ;)

Like how I've remained nameless, really polite that.

I wasn't talking about any band in particular, hence why I said "any band", and I was politely pointing out two simple things to remember whilst looking forward to Coldplay's new album; two things I wasn't sure Til Kingdom Come had noticed, but maybe had.

Let's open up another question:

If Coldplay were to feature any guests on LP6;

a) who would you like to see?

b) who would you bet they'd get?
