Mylo Xyloto or Viva la Vida?

Featured Replies

Music: Viva

Artwork: Viva

Clothing: Viva

Concerts: Viva

These concerts are nothing compared to Viva. It's more of a show, yes, but not that intimate and 'Coldplayish'. I miss Chris' jokes, and I miss Death And All His Friends and Life In Technicolor. The clothing from Viva was really great, and I feel the new ones look wrong, especially Chris' t-shirt.

Viva La Vida musically and stylistically, but Mylo Xyloto creatively.

There's not one song on Viva la Vida album that I would prefer to UWTB or UATW but the rest of the MX era is just not my cup of tea whereas I can listen to almost every song off VLV withoutgetting annoyed. To be honest, I'm not a fan of those xylobands and the band's clothes aren't something that I admire or envy, either. So VLV era, after all.

To me, MX is what X&Y was always trying to be. Modern, mysterious, and constantly challenging the listener to search deep within to better understand the complexity of the world around.

On VIVA, Brian took the band and flipped them upside down; giving them the confidence to try anything and truly transform their sound.

With MX, Coldplay wanted to do something epic on their own. Rather than trying to reinvent the reinventions of VIVA, Coldplay latched onto this futuristic narrative and threw everything they had at it.

Better than Viva? Not necessarily. New? Exciting? Absolutely.

Who knows what LP6 will bring us, but hopefully the band will continue to expand and push forward without retracing their steps.

I will say that the current tour is a bit disappointing. Not that the band isn't INCREDIBLE live, but the authenticity of VIVA's 18th century atmosphere seems to have been replaced by a Vegas act. The lights and 'greatest hits' set lists are fun, but not mind-blowing. Imagine the band playing MX in its entirety with animation on all the screens. Imagine finally reaching UWTB, with Chris lone at the piano finishing the epic narrative…

You're at dinner.

The maitre-d' seats you, mumbling, "The waiter will be here shortly" before scurrying away.

After a couple of arduous minutes, eyes glazing the wine list, the waiter approaches. While pouring water over ice, he asks, "Good evening. I see you have had the time to glance at our wine list. For your entree, would you prefer a lightly-marinated filet mignon or a softened, brown turd freshly-fished from a public stall?"

For music, its a tie for me. Viva has that nice revolution feel to it. MX has very uplifting, hopeful, and certainly colorful feels to it.

For cover artworks for the album and the singles, MX. Although Viva does have some nice classical-looking paintings to it, MX comes on top, because its graffiti art looks beautiful and certainly colorful, fitting all the tracks very nicely.

Me before MX: Viva sucks :disappointed:

Me after MX: Viva is so great!!!

VIVA forever!

I mean, not that MX is bad, but it's nowhere near VLV for me.

it's hard to choose. Viva my love but MX it's so so good.

I love both :loveshower:

MX is amazing. But Viva has something to it that can't be beat. But in no way is MX a step back it's amazing in it's own way. I'm probably biased because Viva really got me into Coldplay. X&Y introduced me to them, but Viva made me love 'em forever. :nice:

VIVA

But sometime I like MX's different stuff.

Viva - Joshua Tree

Mylo - Achtung Baby

Viva laid the foundation of past success and launched themselves into stardom. With Mylo they took a different more electronic approach to their sound and have set out to take over the world. Viva had modest simple stage designs, Mylo in a stadium is, my god.

Viva is great as a studio album

MX is great when played live

Viva.

I love MX, I love the music, I think it's their most cohesive album, the songs flow very well, I love the artwork, I absolutely loved the concert I went to, and from the livestreams you can hear they're incredible right now. But Viva is, to me, a masterpiece, and a very unique and timeless piece of art. I feel MX is less timeless than Viva.

But that is only if we can compare the 2 albums & eras. They seem pretty different to me, and I love all albums & eras.

The Viva outfits where the best! The other stuff's not such a big deal to me (except for the music, and I liked both albums equally but in different ways)...haha! That's all I have to say. Thank you. Bye. :smug2:

as others said above me.

Viva for the record.

Mylo for live, even if the setlists could be better.

MX is great live for sure. Charlie Brown, UATW, and ETIAW are amazing in particular.

However, the more I think about it, the more I enjoy the crafting of VLVoDAAHF. To me, a measure of how "hard" a band is working is whether I could write the songs that they wrote. Sometimes I feel like if I did all the write things, I wouldn't have a hard time churning out HLH or whatever.

But when I think about VLV songs - they just make me go, "HOW ON EARTH DID THEY THINK OF THAT?!?!?!" In particular, Yes, 42, Violet Hill, Strawberry Swing and DAAHF really elicit that feeling. They're so musically intricate - the chord progressions, the meter and rhythm, lyrics. Maybe that makes them a bit more esoteric, but at the same time these are still songs that are so catchy and good live.

Viva, it has everything, it's their most creative album with full use of all their capacities. Best album in my opinion. (I also love MX though but it's not as good as Viva)

This MX era is great, but Viva era was better as a whole. A lot of people who visit Coldplay in concerts might not agree since they keep getting better and better live, but album-wise and song-wise, Viva was better and up there with A Rush of Blood. Mylo Xyloto is a great album but is devised differently.

VLV definitely. and the outfits?! they're nice and everything but don't really work for me. you seen how david gilmour dresses? with music like that you wouldnt need outfits. but i guess as will said, they try to build an artistic space around it and outfits are part of that

I would happily have paid double for Viva La Vida. My favourite album of the last 5 years and the reason I joined this forum. Not sure if MX is even half of what Viva is even though on a live scale Coldplay have got bigger and better with LP5. Both records are about the same length but Viva covers a WHOLE lot more than MX and packs a better punch. It's more creative and refreshing and a hell of a lot more surprising. I mean Coldplay doing shoegazing ala My Bloody Valentine with Chinese Sleep Chant? It seems like a joke until you hear it. And then you realise "Fucking hell this is actually great!".
