The 2012 MTV VMA nominations have just been announced, and Coldplay is nominated for Best Rock Video with Paradise and...Best Direction and Best Cinematography for Princess of China :D

Imagine Dragons - It's Time

Jack White - Sixteen Saltines

Linkin Park - Burn It Down

???

Some people still seem convinced that Coldplay are a rock band :\

Well, I think that as it has become quite difficult to actually put them in a category, lots of people have decided to keep them in the rock category for now

I think many people also think it may be "just a phase", and that Coldplay will go back to "real" rock. They're not completely a pop band yet, for many. Their next album may be a turning point in that matter: will they start being put in the pop category, or will they stay in the rock category ?

I actually think their pop/rock because they do have some elements of rock in there like the guitars and such. Plus they did not have a pop/rock category so they threw them in the rock section. Them as a band are not enough to be categorized as full on pop, at least not yet.

But I hope Linkin Park takes this or Coldplay I guess . I really don't care who wins these awards because to me they don't seem that important.

I also know some people have been harsh on Linkin Park changing their sound for this album just like Coldplay fans have with Mylo, but actually really like it. I've always liked Linkin Park anyways.

Paradise go go go. I hope this will win.

Rock or Pop..doesn't matter for me..I sincerely wish that Paradise gets many awards because it's a GREAT music video..Creative, funny & sweet.

I wouldn't vote for POC though if it were open for public voting..I don't even know why it is on the nominees list :blank:

Yeah, I was surprised about PoC nominations. I thought both directing and cinematography were kinda cheesy :S

I don't hate the PoC video, but I thought Paradise had better direction. I hope it wins, I think it's a great video.

To me that is what pop music is , like its suppose be somewhat cheesy sometimes over the top and even a little campy at times. That's fun of it! Now don't give wrong I'm not a big fan of this video either, but compared to other videos its somewhat extravagant in a cheesy way. :)

Now that I am over my initial confusion

Best Rock Video with Paradise

Going by this, MTV must think this is classical music.

It's not long until one of the best music awards shows of the year - the MTV VMAs - hits our screens. And some rockstars are going to be sipping on their champagne nervously as they wait to see whether they'll be grabbing one of the coveted gongs for 'Best Rock Video'!

But who would you like to see triumph? Maybe it'll be The Black Keys for 'Lonely Boy', Coldplay's 'Paradise' or 'It's Time' by Imagine Dragons. Alternatively, you might be hoping for a Jack White win (for 'Sixteen Saltines') or be urging on Linkin Park's promo for 'Burn It Down'. We'll find out on Thursday, but in the meantime have your say on who should be crowned by voting in our poll below:

Who should win the MTV VMA award for 'Best Rock Video'?

The Black Keys - 'Lonely Boy' - 15.63%

Coldplay - 'Paradise' - 62.50%

Imagine Dragons - 'It's Time' - 3.125%

Jack White - 'Sixteen Saltines' - 0.000%

Linkin Park - 'Burn It Down' - 18.75%

The MTV VMAs will air on Thursday (September 6) at 8/7c.

Thursday is going to be packed with the live Holland stream AND the VMA's!

Coldplay Basks In 'Paradise' With 2012 VMA Best Rock Win

Chris Martin and his Brit bandmates score their first Moonman since 2003, besting Linkin Park and the Black Keys.

It took nine years. And learning how to ride a unicycle. And, oh yeah, writing a typically kick-ass tune and brainstorming a wacked-out video that is silly and sad and marvelous to look at. But Coldplay is finally a Video Music Awards champion again.

The British band took home the 2012 Moonman for Best Rock Video during a live-streamed ceremony, presented by MTV News' James Montgomery and MTV Buzzworthy's Tamar Anitai, in the midst of the main event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday night (September 6). Chris Martin and his crew won for "Paradise," a stellar track off their 2011 album, Mylo Xyloto.

With the triumph, Coldplay bested the likes of the Black Keys (and their viral smash, "Lonely Boy"), Linkin Park's special effects-laden nod to some of Hollywood's geekiest blockbusters, "BURN IT DOWN," and first-time nominee Imagine Dragons' "It's Time."

"Paradise" features Martin, dressed in a plushy elephant costume, escaping the confines of a zoo, hitching a ride on an airplane, hopping aboard that unicycle and peddling furiously to find his fellow humanoid-elephant creatures in South Africa. Part travelogue, part childlike escapist fantasy, part mushy family-reunion saga, the video rises to become more than the sum of its jagged parts, not least because Martin's sonorous vocals have a way of twanging your heart strings.

Moreover, that voices makes you think, Bro, we're all just elephants trapped in our own cages and, seriously dude, if we could just run free, the ice caps would stop melting and no one would go hungry again. Just as important to the video's pop-art success, there's a witty undercurrent rippling through what could seem like, if you were describing the video to your buddy in a bar, a farcical concept: the elephant, stashed away on an airplane, reaches out with his truck to scoop up some spilled peanuts; later his trunk pokes out from a luggage trunk in which he's hiding.

The Best Rock Video win marks Coldplay's fifth Moonman and its first since "The Scientist" nabbed three trophies in 2003, including Breakthrough Video and Best Group Video. Since then, and until this year's show, the band had come up short a number of times at the VMAs, most recently in 2010 when their effort for "Strawberry Swing" lost out on a Breakthrough Video award to the Black Keys' "Tighten Up." It's hard to believe that one of the biggest bands on the planet hadn't won Best Rock Video until now. There Martin goes, unicycling into history.

And Paradise won!
