The 13th Mixtape Exchange - It's Review time.

Featured Replies

When do we start the second round of mixtape reviewing? It's been a month now and I don't know how long we should wait?

Second round?

It is the first time I am part of the exchange, so I am not sure of what this means...

I think now would be as good a time as any. If you haven't done it in a month, chances are, you won't do it at all.

Once again, I'd like to volunteer my ears to a mixtape, should anyone need a review. :nice:

I have yet to receive both a tracklisting and a review (the delay in review makes me afraid of what the review would be like though haha)

^ Oh Crests :(

Diana, usually when doing these mixtape there's always people that don't review the mixtape they received. Not at all. So to have your mixtape reviewed, after a while we just hand mixtapes that have not yet been reviewed out to other people.

Uh! Makes sense! Thanks Kim!

I've seen a ~4 month gap between the making of each thread. I personally feel it's too early, my mixtape was pretty long and it was an overall reflection of what music I listen to now. I feel like I need a bit of time to discover more music and the shorter gap might alienate some people

But feel free to start a thread if you want to! This is just how I feel.

That's good that Diana's gonna get a review! (From what I understood)

I felt so bad because she looked like she put so much effort into her mixtape haha

^Never took part in a Mixtape Exchange, but I think Wyrd meant that maybe it's time for people who didn't get a review from their original partner to get it from someone who will volunteer to do so, just like you said about Diana getting a proper review. So, from what I understood it's not that she's proposing to organise a new exchange.

/it looks as if I'm stalking you guys, but I do enjoy reading your reviews and see the list of song you come up with.

Ah, I see! Sorry. In that case, go for it, Kim.

And you should take part in it next time!

Yeah, Suzana, come on and join us next time! It's a really nice and fun way to discover and share music. :nice:

Has my mixtape ever been reviewed? Haven't been here for a while :uneasy:

That's so nice of you! I've been planning to take part for a long time now because it'd be a great chance to get to know new music and listen to a structured list of songs, but, as my taste is kinda limited, I fear my mixtape partner would be bored and I wouldn't like to make it a bad experience for anyone.

Hi, Thalia, Wyrd (I get your name is Kim?) posted a list of mixtapes reviewed here: http://coldplaying.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5468812&postcount=434

Sorry, but looks like yours haven't been reviewed yet:

Mixtapes of Twisted Mind, Brent, Crest, Coldlocked and Wyrd still want reviewing or have been reviewed by above people and tracklisting/feedback is still missing.

I'm thinking I'll just give my mixtape to someone else

I am up for the second round! :)

Nonsense! As far as taste in music, generally, we're a pretty understanding bunch, especially with those who are new to the exchange. Even if we don't necessarily like what's put on the tape, we appreciate the time and effort people put into them, and that's what matters.

I can see that from the reviews :) I might try it in the future, then, when I gather up enough confidence. :nice:

Me and Twisted Mind might do the same. Should we ask Black Rose again to send the mixtapes to people that volunteer? (sending our links ourselves would kind of give away who made the tape ... I already gave the tracklist of the first songs so perhaps mine is a give away anyway :()

I am up for the second round! :)
:awesome:\/

Yeah, I think that's the best thing to do, if you want a review. I'm sorry you guys have to resort to that instead of getting a review from your original person, though. :(

Haha, I've backed out of exchanges several times before because I panicked, but it is actually pretty fun if you can force yourself to go through with it anyways.

If you want to send me the links again, plus whom you got matched up-to in the first round, then I will re-draw and send them out again :)

Reviewing right now............ Give me a half an hour more....

Holy cheese, I am so late. I apologize to my mixtape maker and to my receiver!

So here's my grading system: 1 means not download worthy, 2 means maybe download worthy, 3 means definitely download worthy.

Here we goooooo!!!!

Intro. Very dramatic opening! I like the whole operatic, orchestra thing! 2

1. THE VOICE OF THIS GUY IS COOL. Sounds like one of the guys from Apparatjik... But I really also love the guitar in here. 3

2. Dang, the instrumental parts are cool! I'm not a big fan of the singer though... SORRY! 2

3. Okay, from the start I love this song. The drums reminds me of Starlight by Muse... The use of those background vocals are really good! It sounds like a walking through the neighbourhood at dusk type of song. 3

4. I guess the name of the song is Over and Out... Nice drums... Drunk sounding in the beginning... Bit of dubstep... Angelic voice... I like it! 3

5/6. Going a bit old school in the beginning... The sliding note sounds like when I tune my violin... BUT THE VOICE, WHAT? I really like the lyrics though! (It's the story of Chrissy girls and Chris...) 2

7. Tubthumping. The horrid anthem of last year's art class... NO. I AM SORRY BUT NO. 1

8. DAH DUH. 2

9. I like the whole intro thing and the guitar and the singer is really good! The high notes in the back during the chorus are awesome too! I'm guessing the toy sounds are the end of track. 3

10. interesting intro. I neeed to learn how to play that... The voice is really nice! The melody is a good one too. 2

11. That was short... But I really like it. 3

12. This is a really good track, tbh. But what is being spelled out? I'm not paying attention enough... BUT THE STRINGS PART!! 3

13. Weird track. I like it. The voice and weird instrument that sounds Indian are really good. 3

Outro. There's a lot of noise on this track... Is that intentional or is it a malfunction? But a very apt goodbye track/outro. 2

So, overall score is... 36/45. I really liked it overall! And to take a shot at guessing who made it... I'm going to say Thalia. :D

Many thanks Trisha!

I was your mixtape maker :P I already gave away the first few songs a few pages ago, but I guess you didn't see that, hahaha! Well, this way it's even better I think because now I can give the whole tracklisting at once and got the whole review from you in one piece. I added comments in cyan in your quote:

So here's my grading system: 1 means not download worthy, 2 means maybe download worthy, 3 means definitely download worthy.

I like weirdness in tapes. I liked the idea of starting the tape with some old classic stuff that is used various times as a cliché intro in movies and commercials (e.g. Jackass the movie). It's the first part of Carl Orff - O Fortuna. They sing "O Fortune, like the moon you are changeable" in Latin which is also like the mixtape, the style changing all the time.

I am glad you could appreciate it!

1. THE VOICE OF THIS GUY IS COOL. Sounds like one of the guys from Apparatjik... But I really also love the guitar in here. 3

Hahaha, he sounds like that because he is from Apparatjik. This is Mew with Snow Brigade. Apparatjik ‘s Jonas Bjerre is the frontman of Mew. If you like this song I recommend you to get their album Frengers!

2. Dang, the instrumental parts are cool! I'm not a big fan of the singer though... SORRY! 2

I can imagine why, he sings ... well ... typical. Personally I love it. Like he uses his voice to talk through the music and when he’s upset he just screams the lyrics. His voice reminds me a bit of that Alt-J dude. I am now thinking that I had a song of them in the previous mixtape as well :S

3. Okay, from the start I love this song. The drums reminds me of Starlight by Muse... The use of those background vocals are really good! It sounds like a walking through the neighbourhood at dusk type of song. 3

Yeah, the song is called Outside and you hear them walk to ‘outside’ like crisping leaves or snow or something. It starts with a comforting voice singing soft to you, sounding like he's close to you and then later on he gets more upset in his singing and sounds further away, but the background singing still makes it an uplifting song somehow. I mixed Track 3 with track 4 because the end of 3 has some seriously lowered down vocals in the end much like how track 4 starts. It is so strange because they are both very different songs - the first one is your typical acoustic indie song and the second one some psychedelic electronics - but they play around with their songs so much that somehow I could mix them into each other and you cannot hear clearly where no.3 ends and no.4 starts because "Temptation's forever" is said at the end of track 3, it’s not the start of track 4. The original song is also longer but I skipped a part, because you got the idea of the song anyway

4. I guess the name of the song is Over and Out... Nice drums... Drunk sounding in the beginning... Bit of dubstep... Angelic voice... I like it! 3

Hahaha, the song is called ‘Black Trees’ but I have no idea why because he sings ‘Over and out, until I am under an exit sign’ On repeat. This is so trippy :) I saw that Nattatouille also put a song of this album in her mixtape. I'm sure Twisted Mind also would love this track, maybe that’s why you thought it might be her mixtape?

5/6. Going a bit old school in the beginning... The sliding note sounds like when I tune my violin... BUT THE VOICE, WHAT? I really like the lyrics though! (It's the story of Chrissy girls and Chris...) 2

The intro old school thing is actually from 2012: Blaudzun – Le Chant Des Vagues, which is more a weird interlude but nice contrast to the next track. Oh how much I love that track! Alice Cooper screaming Poison!!! I like how you relate it to Chrissy girls, hahaha! This is from the 80’s, I know, I’m old, hahaha

7. Tubthumping. The horrid anthem of last year's art class... NO. I AM SORRY BUT NO. 1

sorry, hahaha

8. DAH DUH. 2

9. I like the whole intro thing and the guitar and the singer is really good! The high notes in the back during the chorus are awesome too! I'm guessing the toy sounds are the end of track. 3

This is a tricky one because the song has a toy sound in it but I replaced the original musicbox with another one. The music box you hear is Efteling – Diorama, which the Dutch people on the board will know. I love it and it makes me all nostalgic and all. But the real track is from The Storm. Shit name for a band, but they have nice songs and nice female vocalist. They are a couple. The bassist of Mew (band of the first song) left the band (not yet when they made that song) and started a band with his wife who used to be the frontman of Danish band Swan Lee.

10. interesting intro. I neeed to learn how to play that... The voice is really nice! The melody is a good one too. 2

They have such a nice melodies! Alien Radio also had a song of them in his mixtape though the album wasn’t released yet I think when we made the mixtapes, hahaha! Next year it will be released in the Netherlands, but Danes can already buy it now.

11. That was short... But I really like it. 3

I love this soooooo much!!! It’s just perfect, AAAAAAHHHHHHH. The atmosphere. The Waltz. I am so glad you liked it! It is on the same CD as previous track. It’s the best album released this year. Definitely worth checking out!

12. This is a really good track, tbh. But what is being spelled out? I'm not paying attention enough... BUT THE STRINGS PART!! 3

This is from the same guy that made soundtracks for Amélie, etc. I really love this album of him. Here he spells out P-A-L-E-S-T-I-N-A throughout the whole song. A more heavy song that shows that he can make other great music beside the feel good Amélie piano/accordeon stuff.

13. Weird track. I like it. The voice and weird instrument that sounds Indian are really good. 3

Outro. There's a lot of noise on this track... Is that intentional or is it a malfunction? But a very apt goodbye track/outro. 2

Oh, Indian isn’t the association I would get with this song, but maybe it’s because I know this is made by an English band. It makes such a great closer, I get chills whenever the synth comes in (I guess that’s what you find sounding Indian?). It’s The Horrors with Sea Within a Sea. The outro is another classical piece, like the start of the tape. It's Mozart with his breathtaking ending piece Requiem in Minor D. The noise is intentional to give it an old fealing, hahaha, and because the quality of the track was bad to begin with :ohuh: and yeah I suck at mixing, sorry for that. I'm an amature with some free software.

Thank you for the review!

These two reviews did not get a tracklisting/reply yet: Jeremyy ‘s review and Crests’ Review

"Carmina Burana" and Mozart's "Requiem?" You get classical brownie points from me. :awesome:

Many thanks Trisha!
