That sucks, I'm sorry!

I couldn't resist, I'm already making a new mixtape...... :anxious:

Me too! I find it fascinating. Just as I send off a mixtape, I create a new folder and label it as 'Mixtape In Process' and keep adding new/different stuffs in it as I find them eventually.

^ yeah, it's too much fun. I find those who made it with a theme really interesting. so creative!

+1...

About to give up hope!

I imagine that, at some point, there will be some naming and shaming as far as reviews. In all the times I've done this, there was only one exchange where everyone got a tape and a review from their original person. Most of the time, there are always a couple who get left out.

Don't fret, though. If in fact your original partner doesn't give a review, there are plenty of people who will volunteer to listen to your tape so you at least get a review for your trouble. (If it ever gets to that point, I will gladly volunteer some of my time to do this for anyone who still needs it.)

^ Same!

I am thinking of making a summary who reviewed who so we can see what the score is :P (Also nice to get all the links and tracklistings together)

For the people that got mixtapes late or had Sandy buggering them or had exams, of course you are not to blame! I am just thinking of people that signed in and didn't give a review and also did not show a sign of being alive on here :S

It's been only a bit more than two weeks since the mixtapes were sent! Don't panic! Some people have exams and shit going on.

For the people that got mixtapes late or had Sandy buggering them or had exams, of course you are not to blame! I am just thinking of people that signed in and didn't give a review and also did not show a sign of being alive on here :S

Yeah, agreed. Sorry I didn't clarify this. We all have an understanding that there are things that happen in life that are out of your control, and we're sympathetic to that. However, if you are one of those people who sign up to do this, yet show no interest in participating when the time gets here, then what was the point of you signing up? It's just annoying because it's not fair to the other people who did what they were supposed to do.

*SIGH*

I think my mixtape partner doesn't feel the need to review my tape :dozey: Just like that lazy ass from last year :whip:

:curtain: I'm not part of the mixtape exchange (I missed the deadline) but I allow myself to reply to some of your comments

Yeah, like you did for the 12th mixtape exchange! It was a great idea, you should do it again :nice: Maybe it will also encourage people who haven't post a review to do it!

Well said, I agree with that!

(And if needed, I volunteer myself to review a mixtape ;))

To remain fair to other participants who haven't got a review yet, we must have a deadline for their respective absentees at this point.

My review:

1. Sounds like some krautrock stuff. Synths and whatnot electronic. There's a bit of guitar too. After a while, a male singer with otherwise nice voice screams here and then. That reminded me of Matt Bellamy's screams in Supremacy. The song becomes a mess towards the end. Not really a fan of this.

2. Instrumental. Again krautrock-like synths. This time they're quiet and they fade into the background as a nice, simple piano riff starts. Some weird noises of people who sound like monkeys start in the background too. I could also recognize the sounds of bicycle bells and alarm clocks too. Then it randomly stops. A ~10 seconds lacuna and again everything starts. This was quite interesting.

3. Starts with a sound of changing radio stations. When one station is finally chosen, a cool tune starts. It's also full of synth and whatnot electronic. Then, a male singer, who sounds like he's a country singer, starts singing lyrics about Texas… I can also hear TV news in the background of this one… It's pretty cool, like a nice combination of country and krautrock… But the whole thing ends after only 2 and a half minutes.

4. Wow, jazz. I didn't expect jazz on a tape that was filled with synth stuff. But the jazz part ends at around 1 minute mark. A weird mixture of music genres then starts, but it mostly sounds like Americana to me. Could be wrong as I don't really listen to Americana. Then a solo on some Indian (?) woodwind instrument. Quite interesting.

5. 3,5 minutes long Instrumental. Acoustic guitar arpeggios, with a HIGH reverb. Electric guitar plays some slow riffs too. It's haunting. Sounds like Bon Iver's second album. I love it!

6. This starts with a cool combination of noises and synths. A nice transition after the previous track. The singer's voice sounds familiar to me. Could be wrong though. I really like this one too!

7. :dazzled: Cheery piano riff, haunting synths and electric drums which add a nice effect to it. I love it's ambiance. There are also some noises of people here and then. But those don't sound like monkeys. They sound like people singing and ooh-ing.

8. Woah, nice mood killer. Heavy drums, heavy piano. Synths enter the song later again. I love how all the songs on this tape so far were quite different in genres, but they're all synth based song. The song turns into a chaos towards the end. Apocalypse. I really like this one. A male singer also has a really nice voice.

9. Intrumental time again! I really like the structure of the tape. Starts with some woodwind instrument, then it stops and gloomy synths enter. There's also a choir of people with deep voices and this adds to the nightmare-like feel of this song. I love it. But this nightmare turns into a beautiful dream when the woodwind instrument returns.

10. This one is my favourite so far! Sounds very English, lol. Muted electric guitar is strummed, a simple drum line and synths too. Sounds a bit jazzy at times too.

11. Fitter, happier, more productive. It's not Fitter Happier by Radiohead, but the beginning reminded me of it. A computer voice. It's very krautrock-y. Catchy synth riffs. Then a male singer enters: „We expect the future to be like a wave: we think it's gonna carry us away.“ (…) Computer voice saying something again, followed with synths and so on. Lyrics are repeated. It's pretty much a very cheery tune. I'm not really sure if I like this or not. :p

12. 1,5 minutes of only weird random noises. Then a deep male singer enters. The noises continue. A quiet synth starts in the background. „There's a man down in the valley, who doesn't speak in his own tongue.“ I like the lyrics. There are no other instruments in the whole song. Only a male singer and weird noises. And then, the tape ends.

***

I really liked the flow and the structure of the tape. I don't usually listen to the music genres featured on this tape, so they're quiet new to me and I like them from what I've heard on this tape. I can't decide on a favourite song, but I liked pretty much every song on the tape, except the opener. I'm looking forward to seeing who the artists are, and getting to know more stuff by them! Overall, I'd give it a 8,5/10. It sounds like a well organised album with a lot of new things to hear. Thank you!

P.S. I know only one person who listens to krautrock on this board, so I'm pretty sure that I know who created this tape :P

My mixtape review.

I'm not going to do a track by track review, but overall a very good tape with a good mix of bands from Franz, fratelies, peter Bjorn and John, Kaiser chiefs

No tracks which made me hit the skip track button on the car's stereo. A good driving mixtape :-)

:curtain:

Hi Fran! Yes, you got it right, I was your mixtape partner :)

Actually, this is not krautrock, but it was partly influenced by. This song is the title track of The Mars Volta's last album, Noctourniquet. I really like Omar's voice because it kind of reminds me of Robert Plant's and also the overall "messiness" of the song but I can see why you may find it too noisy.

The original song doesn't restart. For some reason there was an error in the song's file that made it restart but I thought it created a very cool effect so I left it that way :p. This is by krautrock band Cluster, which I think they're very underrated.

Well, that's not a country singer, that's Damon Albarn-2D :p. It has a country-ish feel because it was written during the 2010 Gorillaz north american tour, in Huston, as you've noticed. I really can't believe that this song was composed on an Ipad

4. Closer track of Aqualung, legendary album by prog-rock band Jethro Tull. I remember how my mind was blown when I heard it for the first time: the way it changes tempo is really unexpected. Also, that's just a flute.

5. 3,5 minutes long Instrumental. Acoustic guitar arpeggios, with a HIGH reverb. Electric guitar plays some slow riffs too. It's haunting. Sounds like Bon Iver's second album. I love it!

This by Leo Abrahams, a very talented guitarist. He's collaborated with Brian Eno and Paul Simon among others. Check him out!

6. This starts with a cool combination of noises and synths. A nice transition after the previous track. The singer's voice sounds familiar to me. Could be wrong though. I really like this one too!

Yep, you've probably already heard that voice. That's Martin Gore of Depeche Mode. It's a shame that they left this of their last album. Could have been a classic.

7. :dazzled: Cheery piano riff, haunting synths and electric drums which add a nice effect to it. I love it's ambiance. There are also some noises of people here and then. But those don't sound like monkeys. They sound like people singing and ooh-ing.

I love this one too. Shadows In Silence by Enigma. They're a musical project that mixes '90s electronica, ambient and world music. They have more "radio friendly" songs and more experimental ones like this

Apocalypse is the word, since this is called Apocalypse Dreams. It's from Tame Impala's new album, one of my favorites of this year. I like how it builds up until becoming all explosive/chaotic

This is by Tangerine Dream, great krautrock band. I really like how this song fuses classic krautrock electronic elements with more folkish ones. The whole album where this song is from is absolutely brilliant.

10. This one is my favourite so far! Sounds very English, lol. Muted electric guitar is strummed, a simple drum line and synths too. Sounds a bit jazzy at times too.

I've been getting into Beck's music recently, so I wanted to include my favourite song by him. It's very short but dynamic. Glad that you liked it.

11. Fitter, happier, more productive. It's not Fitter Happier by Radiohead, but the beginning reminded me of it. A computer voice. It's very krautrock-y. Catchy synth riffs. It's pretty much a very cheery tune. I'm not really sure if I like this or not. :p

I wanted to put this song on the tape because I thought there should've been a more "goofy" one compared to the others and because I wanted to see your reaction to it :P. Actually, this song sounds krautrock-y because is by Karl Bartos, Kraftwerk ex-keyboardist.

12. 1,5 minutes of only weird random noises. Then a deep male singer enters. The noises continue. A quiet synth starts in the background. „There's a man down in the valley, who doesn't speak in his own tongue.“ I like the lyrics. There are no other instruments in the whole song. Only a male singer and weird noises. And then, the tape ends.

What's better than ending the mixtape with avant-garde folk? :escaping:

Surprisingly, this is the title track of David Sylvian's last album. I think the story described by the lyrics is very impressive and I also like how David sings/narrates it.

Oh, I'm really flattered . Making this mixtape was kind of a challenge since you already know my music tastes very well and I didn't want to sound too obvious, but I didn't manged to make me... unrecognizable :P. Anyway, I'm really glad that you liked it. :)
