Yep, sure did. :nice:

Awww, thank you!

Here's my review:

1. Beirut. Nice choice, though this is a random song to choose :nice:

2. Sounds like a pretty straightforward pop song, some guy lamenting about "feeling a chill," assuring his lost love that he'll "slow it down this time." As a song, I don't like it much, but it sounds really really nice with the song before it. I can tell this is going to flow really well.

3. Acoustic guy, sounds really familiar to me. Sounds kinda like the guy from Magnetic Fields with a higher voice. The lyrics are really dry: "Darling...I'm leaving..." talking about some girl as usual. Meh. I like the sound of it. The rhythm progresses very well.

4. I know this song (AKA...What A Life by Noel Gallagher). I hate the Gallaghers. Though, I guess, Noel is better than Liam because he's just smug, not an outwardly emboldened dick. I don't think I've ever listened to it all the way through, so thanks for making me do that.

5. I really like whatever this is. It's ambient but not background music. I can't really hear what they are saying (they...there are two prominent voices in this song) so the focus is more on the music than the lyrics. Instruments are turned way up and progress like a fire sweeping through a forest: Quickly, covering a lot of ground. The atmosphere just blankets my ears. It's really cool. Very unique.

6. This is the sonic antithesis of the last track: More minimal. It reminds me of The Postal Service's Nothing Better, in that it's a soft-spoken guy is duetting with a soft-spoken girl over electronic, passive beeps and blurps. In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd think this was Ben Gibbard himself. Sounds alright.

7. Blue Eyes- Destroyer. I am obsessed with Kaputt. And with The New Pornographers. You can't hide from me. Gorgeous, gorgeous song. I don't know if you're doing it on purpose, but I really like the subtle trumpet motif you have going on in this mixtape.

8. When a foreign person is chattering in a foreign language, if the tuning is right, it can add a remarkable dynamic to a song. Because the poetry doesn't exist anymore, the voice is no longer a medium for poetic ideas, it's now an instrument. This is an example of that idea. Really cool Eastern-language vocals layered over tribal rhythms and wailing guitar. Pretty neat. Not quite world music but it dances that line.

9. Whatever this is, I like it. Don't love it. But like it. I don't really have much else to say about it for some reason. I like the way the guy says "full cir-ir-ircle." Anyway.

10. This is a really cool song. The vocalist has a really weird, weak-to-strong dynamic when she sings. Her voice, weirdly enunciated, battles with the plucking mid-range guitar. Forms kind of a dynamic back-and-forth between the two sides. Very unique. I'm looking forward to learning what this is and buying everything. Or stealing it. Whatever.

11. You like female vocalists, don't you? Haha. I think this is A Fine Frenzy but I can't put my finger on the song. I like them.

12. Strong electronic synths form an ambient, but loud, atmosphere. A very textured song, reminds me of an 80's-pop take on more high-energy dance stuff. Another theme on this mixtape: Masked vocals. Mysterious. It's hypnotizing in a way. Really like it.

13. Woah, this is a surprise. Countryish harmonica folk stuff. I can dig it. I'm a sucker for this: soft acoustic plucks at a guitar and calming, raspily smooth vocals. "Take me under the floorboards..." Love the tambourine. Love this song.

14. Wailing guy over minimal percussion and club synths. I found myself dancing back-and-forth in my desk chair listening to this. I hope no-one's watching.

15. Last track: Acoustic ballad. Not really into it: A little bland. Though I do like the twangy country stuff in the background.

IMPRESSIONS:

The mixtape flows very well, and that art is nothing to scoff at. In the world of playlists and single-song downloads it's hard to do. I can tell you put a lot of thought and care into creating this. Thanks so much.

I like most of the songs on here, and they have a lot of musical muscle: Ambience, synth-heavy stuff serves it well.

Still hate Noel, though.

SCORE: 8.5/10

Thanks so much! This was a ton of fun.

^hahaha, I can see from the description of the song that number 13 is The Rumour Said Fire with The Balcony.

Yeah, you better love it! ... :awesome:

I always wonder if people really dance to it when they write that or whether it is like typing LOL

(I hope it's the first one, because I don't want to be the freak that really does that)

Okay, I didn't do much work. Was mostly listening to the mixtape :uhoh:

It's 1:30+ hours long. But you haven't got me complaining! So when I opened the folder, instead of a cover picture I found a word document that said READ ME BEFORE LISTENING so that's what I did before starting the tape. I listened it first in Winamp, where no visuals were shown. When later on I listened to it again at work, I was surprised to have a cover coming up in Mediaplayer! Nice surprise. It really fits the mood of the whole tape imo.

Now on to the songs:

1. It starts with a striaghtforward pop/rock song. It has a nice Coldplay vibe :} (I mean that in the good way, because I am one of those people in the lounge that still likes Coldplay :P) I like it! 8/10

2. Interpol - C'mere :) It's a sad song. He sings that he loves a girl that is in love with someone else :(

3. Female vocalist with a straight love song. I know this singer. But I don’t like her songs, to be honest. It’s a bit blank.

4. OMG a straight 10 there! I love this song so much! It's so heartbreakingly sad. Love the contrast between the guitar play in the verses and the chorus (refrain). Such a simple guitar line to begin with and then with the chorus they go loose EVERY OCCASION I LL BE READY FOR A FUNERAL <3 I really missed a song like this on their latest album. All the strength and inspiration seems to have bled out of them. All that’s left is a boring indie folk band that sounds like any of them. Band Of Horses – Funeral 10/10

5. Elbow - The Night Will Always Win. I didn't really like this CD. It’s a pretty song, but a bit too slow for me. It fits better in this mixtape than on the album. Here I would give it a 7/10

6. Nice male voice. An The XX guitar-stylish intro. I like the way the song progresses. A sort of beat gets in, the song gets louder and louder ... then more percussion comes in and the song is not a ballad anymore but Indie. Weird to hear the guy sing ‘God Damn’ with such a soft voice. But it fits, it’s the song. Why didn’t I know about this song yet??? It’s great! I am looking very much forward to hear what it is.

7. Long guitar intro. No wait, this is a post-rock song. The whole way the song is building up to a massive thing. No lyrics needed, the song does all the work. The song seems to be perfectly capable of capturing emotions and throwing them right back at ye. Well done. Did I mention I love build-ups? The song sounds like it could be ... Explosions In The Sky or Mono?

8. Not impressed by the beginning. I guess this song is mostly lyrics driven. Later on when the trumpets come in, it gets better. Sadly that’s also the end of the song. Cute song, though the lyrics are sad. I don’t like this song so much.

9. Nice flow in the song. A bit of disco, electronic. It sounds like VETO. Mostly the voice. The music is too uplifting though. The multi-layered voice makes me think I know this band, it is typical for them, but I can’t get the band :bomb: ... after long thinking.... I think it’s Friendly Fires! I don’t know this song from them :S

10. Piano piece. It feels like an intermezzo though the melody is too much worked out for it. I guess it can work as a stand-alone song. It sounds sad. Like a tune someone would play for someone else hoping that that person gets through the music how much he loves her and that it saddens him that she doesn’t get it. Very sensitive. At second listen I find myself really liking this.

11. The song gets really nice when the guitar tunes in. Another lyric driven song. I notice that I pay attention to the lyrics (well, the last song didn’t have lyrics, so I obviously didn’t do it there). The song is a bit too simple for my taste. 5/10

12. Another relative short song. Acoustic guitar, double vocals. Oh, it’s the guy that covered The Knife. He has a pleasant voice. His guitar work sounds überordinary though. It can’t keep my attention.

13. Oh, didn’t expect those fast drums to set in. Oooooh wait, I know this artist! <3 Ah lovely, that deep voice. It’s almost soothing. It’s The National isn’t it? The song is again quite short, but so fitting. The guy says so much in it. He’s hurt because he loves her but she doesn’t answer his feelings or changes her mind too many times and he knows he has to let go but can’t and instead gets more ‘stalkerish’ hoping that she will notice him and realise that she needs him as well. He tries to be interesting. “boning up” wtf? This song kinds of creeps me out. Doesn’t make me like it less :P

14. The guitar in the beginning doesn’t really do it for me. It sounds like Snow Patrol. Yeah, quite sure it’s them. The song is okay, it has a nice blast in the end. I always forget that I like Snow Patrol. I think it’s because some songs of them I detest, and it makes me too cautious to want to find new songs by them. I dunno, I guess I am missing out on good songs because of that... because this is a decent song.

15. Sigur Rós – Heysatan. This song of them is much like Sigur Rós new album. More ambient than post-rockish.

16. Folkish song. More uplifting than previous songs. Nice little choir in the chorus :) I’d like to know who the artist is. 8/10 but might grow even more on me.

17. Starts very dark in comparison to the previous track. It’s the next part of the story. Here the guy is disillusioned when the relationship with the girl isn’t what he expected it to be.

18. The Temper Trap :) Nice song. I am a sucker for high male voices :S

19. Sounds like a singer-songwriter. The music is relative simple. The lyrics a bit weird “I’ll be your fever” :uhoh: I’d skip it if it would on a CD I listen to, sorry :S

20. Jeej! The XX :D It’s from their debut. I didn’t like this song that much as other songs on it, like Intro and Infinity which are amazing! But I like how they made the drum sound like a heartbeat, since the song is about “heart skipped a beat” 7/10

21. Oh, I hear backward sounds in the intro. Much repetitive lyrics. Are you telling yourself or someone else that it’s gonna be alright? :P Thinking back of it, this one loops nicely with the first song, which basically says the same :“it’s gonna be alright, your days are gonna come” and of course the ending of the song is the reverse of the intro

I enjoyed the mix! It didn’t get boring. Some songs made me go ‘meh’ but overall I liked what it had to offer me. I can imagine others getting other favourites out of this one as I do. My favourites are 1, 4, 6, 10, 13, 16, 18. The tape had a nice mix of different styles in it, but not so that it got messy. Most still went with the general theme and made it flow. Now I am curious what the tracklist is! :D

Hey Brent, my name's Marie and I'm your mixtape maker :)

Here's my review:

1. Beirut. Nice choice, though this is a random song to choose :nice:

I thought it was a great opening, idk haha.

2. Sounds like a pretty straightforward pop song, some guy lamenting about "feeling a chill," assuring his lost love that he'll "slow it down this time." As a song, I don't like it much, but it sounds really really nice with the song before it. I can tell this is going to flow really well.

Ah thanks, I tried to make it flow!

Frank Turner. His songs mostly revolve about love, life and wanderlust, which is also the title of the song, "Wanderlust".

4. I know this song (AKA...What A Life by Noel Gallagher). I hate the Gallaghers. Though, I guess, Noel is better than Liam because he's just smug, not an outwardly emboldened dick. I don't think I've ever listened to it all the way through, so thanks for making me do that.

HA. I asked Rudy for help, to see if you knew many of the artists I was putting on the mixtape, and we wanted to see if you would catch the bait and enjoy the song without knowing who it was. Heh. You are welcome.

Ahhh had I known you liked that kind of music, I would have put much more on that mixtape. Glad you enjoyed it, it's called "23" by Blonde Redhead.

Yeh it's a cute little electronic song. Cider Sky.

7. Blue Eyes- Destroyer. I am obsessed with Kaputt. And with The New Pornographers. You can't hide from me. Gorgeous, gorgeous song. I don't know if you're doing it on purpose, but I really like the subtle trumpet motif you have going on in this mixtape.

God do I love that album. Such good stuff. I've been obsessed with that song. The trumpet thingie is a coincidence tho, eh.

Amadou & Mariam, they've got a lot of praise these past couple of years. They are a blind couple from Africa, very talented, in collaboration with Santigold.

9. Whatever this is, I like it. Don't love it. But like it. I don't really have much else to say about it for some reason. I like the way the guy says "full cir-ir-ircle." Anyway.

Half Moon Run, saw them open for Metric, pretty good talent from Montreal.

Whatever.

The Jezabels, very underrated band from Australia. Glad you liked that!

11. You like female vocalists, don't you? Haha. I think this is A Fine Frenzy but I can't put my finger on the song. I like them.

Heh I actually have very little female vocalists in my itunes library, but I'm in love with the female fronted bands I like

12. Strong electronic synths form an ambient, but loud, atmosphere. A very textured song, reminds me of an 80's-pop take on more high-energy dance stuff. Another theme on this mixtape: Masked vocals. Mysterious. It's hypnotizing in a way. Really like it.

Washed Out. Such good stuff. God I was scared you wouldn't like that type of music so I didn't put too much. Shouldn't have listened to Rudy.

13. Woah, this is a surprise. Countryish harmonica folk stuff. I can dig it. I'm a sucker for this: soft acoustic plucks at a guitar and calming, raspily smooth vocals. "Take me under the floorboards..." Love the tambourine. Love this song.

Danish band called The Rumour Said Fire whom I am in love with  I always put this one in every mixtape I make because they've got good stuff and it's a shame so little people know of them.

14. Wailing guy over minimal percussion and club synths. I found myself dancing back-and-forth in my desk chair listening to this. I hope no-one's watching.

Canadian band called The Rural Alberta Avantage. It's a light song, very nice.

15. Last track: Acoustic ballad. Not really into it: A little bland. Though I do like the twangy country stuff in the background.

ahh too bad, I thought it'd be a great closer. maybe next time. The Decemberists.

Thanks for the great review! You made me realize that my kind of music does have a lot of trumpets and heavy synths stuff. I did try to make it flow very well, because that keeps the listener interested in the mixtape through the whole listen.

Tracklist:

1. Beirut - Gulag Orkestar

2. Goldheart Assembly - King of Rome

3. Frank Turner - Wanderlust

4. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - AKA...What A Life!

5. Blonde Redhead - 23

^I learned about 23 from my mixtape maker last year. Wonderful tune:D

I always wonder if people really dance to it when they write that or whether it is like typing LOL

(I hope it's the first one, because I don't want to be the freak that really does that)

I do it too... pretty much always. And most of the time i do LOL... but there is a difference between LOL and lol.. lol is more fakeish... I think

I'm gonna have to write my review next week. I have exams this week, games this weekend and I'm learning to drive aside from school, so I'm not gonna have much time. Just letting you know.

I always wonder if people really dance to it when they write that or whether it is like typing LOL

(I hope it's the first one, because I don't want to be the freak that really does that)

Yeah I really do it. No shame.

Hey Wyrd! I was your mixtape maker :) Thanks to my professional stalking skills I noticed my original partner hadn't been on for awhile and when I asked Black Rose about it she then told me you would get the mix instead.

I'm glad the time wasn't a bother, if you see a few pages back you'd see me worrying about it when it was mentioned it's best to keep them at 50-70 mins haha. As you said at first, the tape was intended for a lad which is why I thought I'd include the note. And like I said, the songs on this tape match the mood I'm in when I think about her :embarrassed: The cover is a painting by Leonid Afremov, who has some really beautiful paintings

Now on to the songs:

1. It starts with a striaghtforward pop/rock song. It has a nice Coldplay vibe :} (I mean that in the good way, because I am one of those people in the lounge that still likes Coldplay :P) I like it! 8/10

Ah I really enjoy this song, it's great to hear for starting the day I think. It's by Embrace who Chris Martin wrote Gravity for. Embrace - No Use Crying

2. Interpol - C'mere :) It's a sad song. He sings that he loves a girl that is in love with someone else :(

You say it all, it fits what I thought for awhile last year, especially let an opportunity slip through my fingers.

3. Female vocalist with a straight love song. I know this singer. But I don’t like her songs, to be honest. It’s a bit blank.

This is Ellie Goulding. I thought the song was suitable for the theme but I was 50/50 about putting it in, what made do it was some of the lyrics which seemed appropriate. Ellie Goulding - Guns And Horses

I really like this song, only heard it for the first time a few weeks ago thanks to How I Met Your Mother. I'll be honest I know nothing about the band but I intend to find out more :D

5. Elbow - The Night Will Always Win. I didn't really like this CD. It’s a pretty song, but a bit too slow for me. It fits better in this mixtape than on the album. Here I would give it a 7/10

I'm the opposite, this song and Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl are my favourites of the album. I'm glad you liked it more on the tape *pats himself on the back*

Out of my top 5 all time favourite songs this is easily 3rd or 4th on the list. Such a powerful and emotional song and it's a song I get quite protective over when someone dares to try and put it down lol. Anyway this is Foals and the song is Spanish Sahara

This is a great track from a great EP. Like you said the lyrics aren't necessary as the music gives so much. The EP can be downloaded for free from their website which is well worth getting! All shall be well (and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well) - There will always be at least a thousand things you don’t know.

8. Not impressed by the beginning. I guess this song is mostly lyrics driven. Later on when the trumpets come in, it gets better. Sadly that’s also the end of the song. Cute song, though the lyrics are sad. I don’t like this song so much.

Really? I think it's quite a good soft, mood setting track but everyone's different :) Biffy Clyro - God & Satan

This song has been stuck in my head for weeks and to me it suited what I was trying to do, which was make a mixtape for a crush. You're right it is Friendly Fires and this was taken from their first album which is self titled. Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy [single Version]

You described it well, not entirely accurate to me but it does give the image of what this tape is meant to give. Lola Perin - Music from Fragile Light Spaces Piano Suite IV: Newark Airport 1

11. The song gets really nice when the guitar tunes in. Another lyric driven song. I notice that I pay attention to the lyrics (well, the last song didn’t have lyrics, so I obviously didn’t do it there). The song is a bit too simple for my taste. 5/10

Yeah, I find the intro is pretty cool too. I like the story told in the song about drugs, theft and relapsing, not really all that romantic but like I said these songs were about me and my crush. It's more the instruments than the lyrics that fit the mood of the tape for me though, not implying that I'm a relapsed drug addict, theft haha. My Morning Jacket - Outta My System

12. Another relative short song. Acoustic guitar, double vocals. Oh, it’s the guy that covered The Knife. He has a pleasant voice. His guitar work sounds überordinary though. It can’t keep my attention.

This is José González who did indeed cover The Knife's Heartbeats. It's a shame you don't like it because the album is fantastic for chilling out or unwinding. José González - Save Your Day

I only have one The National album and this song is the one that'd get put on repeat when I listen to The National. The National - Brainy

Remember that top 5 list I was on about further up? Well this is what's no.1 on that list. Snow Patrol are my favourite band but they are quite a marmite band (you either love them or hate them). This song on my iTunes has over 100,000 plays and has only been skipped once (yes I realise that's more obsessive than a belieber or 1D fan haha). Outside of love stuff, this song alone has pulled me through the darkest hours of my life since it's release in 2006. Snow Patrol - Open Your Eyes

15. Sigur Rós – Heysatan. This song of them is much like Sigur Rós new album. More ambient than post-rockish.

I agree, very mellow, whereas with Sigur Rós I always expect a build up in tension followed by an explosion of sound. But this song fits my mood of the theme so that's why it made the cut.

16. Folkish song. More uplifting than previous songs. Nice little choir in the chorus :) I’d like to know who the artist is. 8/10 but might grow even more on me.

I'm glad you gave this such a high rating because the album this is off is simply stunning. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago

17. Starts very dark in comparison to the previous track. It’s the next part of the story. Here the guy is disillusioned when the relationship with the girl isn’t what he expected it to be.

I'm glad you got the tape now instead of the original person. You've interpreted it almost perfectly. All I'd change though is that it's fear of what the relationship would be like after she's been told how I feel.

18. The Temper Trap :) Nice song. I am a sucker for high male voices :S

The Temper Trap are quality although I haven't heard any of their new stuff yet. I love the chorus mostly for the change in music and drums but also the lyrics are catchy too IMO

19. Sounds like a singer-songwriter. The music is relative simple. The lyrics a bit weird “I’ll be your fever” :uhoh: I’d skip it if it would on a CD I listen to, sorry :S

Like with the Ellie Goulding track I was on the fence about including this one. I regretted it once submitted but oh well. Villagers - The Pact (I'll Be Your Fever)

20. Jeej! The XX :D It’s from their debut. I didn’t like this song that much as other songs on it, like Intro and Infinity which are amazing! But I like how they made the drum sound like a heartbeat, since the song is about “heart skipped a beat” 7/10

This isn't my favourite of the album either but I find it hard to pick one cos it's such a good album! The XX - Heart Skipped A Beat

Well like I said in the note, this mixtape is about how I'd feel if I actually had the balls to tell the girl I like how I felt. So once again you've got it right, it's me reassuring myself that no matter what's said it'll be alright cos wether it ends well or badly better days will come. The New Pornographers - Hey Snow White

Well that's the risk you take with big mixtapes and I'm glad it paid off! Even if you only found one song on it that you liked, I would've been happy with that. One thing I was very careful about was the flow so I'm glad to see I got it right :D

OOOH, this looks quite nice, Jack!

Thanks Violet, in the end that was the second mixtape out of the two I made, it was a difficult choice to make!

Damn Jack (I believe it is your name :P), that's some good stuff.

Aww, thanks, you're making me blush :embarrassed: and yep, that's my name!

Thanks Fran :D Not as good as the one you made me though :)

Ok, so, after giving it some listens, here's my review. Some song titles/informations were still present.

1. Starts with a very simple but nice guitar riff then a voice (can't tell if male or female) comes in. It keeps adding different instruments until it reaches an "explosive" climax. I think it lasts a bit longer than it should have but it's not a problem for me. Indeed a good mixtape opener.

2. According to Itunes, this is In A Quiet Corner by Appartjik. I've already listened to some of their songs before but I didn't really like them. This, however, is really good and indeed makes me feel like "in a quiet corner"

3. Woah, I recognized this from the very first chord! This is The Killers covering one of my favourite Dire Straits song, Romeo and Juliet (The Killers also played a short snippet of this when they came in Verona two months ago). I don't like it as much as the original but it's still an awesome cover :)

4. A folkish song based on acustic guitar. For some reason it reminds me of the folk/prog rock band Kansas but I don't think it's them. It has a really nice melody but gets a bit repetitive.

5. There was still the album cover on this one. It's the cover of the White Lies' debut album and, judging from the lyrics, this song is... the title track :P. Anyway, I never listened to them. I think this song is quite catchy and has a very good and powerful bass line and the vocals are really deep but doesn't do a lot to me. :\

6. Ooh, acustic guitar again! "Little ghost, little ghost!", a woman and a man sing. Sounds like a fast, happy country-ish song. The vocals are kind of annoying to me. Least favourite of the tape, sorry :(

7. Hey, I recognise this too! This is Dry Your Eyes by The Streets featuring our Chris. Really dig this one.

8. A fast pop-punk song with a female singer. I'm pretty sure I've already heard this, in an advert maybe? Not a big fan though.

9. Starts with a weird backwards sound, but then it becomes a "normal" alt rock song. It's one of those songs which makes you feel happy and a bit ummm, nostalgic, I should say, at the same time. One of the best of the mixtape.

10. A syncopathed rythm and a violin introduce the song. It's very catchy and has a sort of '80s vibe. It's quite cheesy but not too much.

11.Wow, what an uplifting song! Sounds indeed like a "bold anthem" but it's not all over the place. The chorus melody sounds quite familiar. Could this be Elbow or am I totally getting it wrong?

12. Oh, this is one of the cutest songs ever . Itunes says it's If I Were A Fish by Mùm. The vocals are sung by two women and it's pratically a rhyme accopained by a lovely acustic guitar melody. I really like this one too :nice:

13."We're out looking for astronauts, looking for astronauts" a deep voice sings. I really like how this song progresses: it first starts with a very "dreamy" guitar and then a string arragement kicks in to create an even more... etheral, I'd say, atmosphere. Favorite track of the mixtape

14. This one sounds like.......... sirtaki music? But the language is not greek. So, could this be Turkish folk music? I usually don't like mediterranean music (Italian music included) but I quite like this one.

15. The last song is again based on guitars (both acustic and electric this time). It's quite a melancholy song but not sad/depressing at all. Really good closer.

Overally, the mixtape was really good. It's not the stuff I'm into right now and I'd have prefered a bit more variety but it flowed really well and I really loved some songs.

Trying to guess, is this Ceren(Jeremyy)'s mixtape?

Either way, well done!

6. Ooh, acustic guitar again! "Little ghost, little ghost!", a woman and a man sing. Sounds like a fast, happy country-ish song. The vocals are kind of annoying to me. Least favourite of the tape, sorry :(

From your description, it sounds like this is "Little Ghost" by The White Stripes.

Alright, here's my review! Fair warning, I wrote a lot! Kept my conclusions out of a spoiler if it's too tl;dr

My mixtape was primarily hip-hop, with touches on jazz, R&B, and electronic music. This is cool because hip-hop is something I wanted to pay attention to more. You didn't just compile a collection of cutesy twee-indie-folk-pop songs that would be universally approved. You actually catered to something that was missing in my knowledge of music. Or maybe these are just songs you like. Dunno. Either way, cheers to you :huskyhug:

First thing worth mentioning is that my partner used this as the album cover:

Amazing.

Track 1:

Opener is a nice little jazz piece, I assume that is what genre it is. It's uptempo and pretty cheesy and elevator music-esque, hahaha. My sister informed me that this is a cover of some old and classic song. Completely escaped my mind after she told me. I guess I should know it, tbh I know fuck all about music.

Anyway, around 45 seconds in, the tempo slows down, and it starts to sound a bit more sexy, haha. This is when the song starts to get really interesting for me. Prominent drumbeat and a electric guitar going on in the background. There's this sort of 'swirling' or distortion of the sax and that's nice too.

Interesting song! You show right off the bat that this is not gonna be like your average mixtape. Would I listen to it in my free time? Perhaps.

Track 2:

Woah ok now we've got some hip-hop! Some old school hip-hop. Very '90s. The beat is really catchy. It's like a loop of someone noodling around on a piano and an instrument that I can't identify :huh2:

There's a lot of scratching and sampling of voices through the end of the song. Rapper's voice sounds really familiar, like it would be found in my big sister's record collection. I really, really like this! Can't wait to hear who's it by. I mean I can always Google the lyrics, but that's no fun, is it

Track 3:

"We got the jazz, we got the jazz, we got the jazz" etc.

Two people taking turns rapping. This one is a lot more chill and less 'aggressive', if that makes sense. This time they're rapping (can I call it rapping? It's more slow and rhythmic in this song) over some hushed and quiet synth notes. In the chorus, someone playing the sax.

Someone mentioned that it's 1991 in the song, so I guess I'm safe to assume that I am listening to '90s hip-hop. Or maybe he's alluding to something, or maybe he's a pathological liar.

Good stuff. Would listen to this one too.

Track 4:

Track 4 flows so seamlessly with track 3 that it took me a bit to realize the song was over. Here are a group of people having a chat and soon they start shouting "REPRESENT!!!!! REPRESENT!!!!!!" Not sure if I want to, but thanks for the offer.

Nice and catchy beat, as always. This one is more about guns and shooting etc. which I didn't notice any of the previous songs having. I guess this one is more h@rdc0re idk.

Wow this guy has a lot of people to shout-out to. He's been calling out names for like two minutes. Also he mentions that this is from '94.

Would I listen to this again? Yeah, perhaps.

Track 5:

Live band in this one. More jazzy, less hip-hop. Woah, that's cool. Sounds a bit orchestral. Lots of instruments going on that I can't identify :disappointed: There's a violin and piano, for one.

More scratching and sampling of voices. We are still in the same 'theme' of music, but this sounds less '90s and more like a tribute to the '90s.

This is basically instrumental and is just something calming to listen to. We're now at the end of the song and that big concert of instruments has simmered down to a violin and some percussion instrument. I don't know what it's called, but I know I used it in music class in third grade. It's being played over and over and it's starting to get a bit old. But hey, it's a cool instrument, I can see why he likes it.

Pretty likely that I'd listen to this too.

Track 6:

Sax sampled in the background. Another fusion of jazz and hip-hop. Wow this might be the best track yet. Really upbeat and interesting, something you'd listen to when you walk around the city, strutting like a confident asshole, and it'd make your morning routine a lot less menial. Have you noticed that you haven't let me down yet? Am I too easy on reviewing or are you just that good? Hmm...

This sounds inspired by the '90s too, but it sounds much too 'modern' to be '90s. Are we moving chronologically?

This is really catchy! Poppier than the rest, and I am a sucker for pop music. Nice one.

Track 7:

We've definitely gone in a different direction. I mean, it's still the same genre, but now the beat is entirely computerized, or on a synthesizer or something. Rapper's voice is tough and aggressive. He has someone joining him in the chorus; a friend with an equally tough and aggressive voice.

The voices and the beat start distorting a bit, like someone was sitting in the studio pushing a lot of buttons and messing about with all the options.

Not really feeling this one, sorry. Beat is not really interesting and their rapping is pretty monotone and dull.

Track 8:

String section, reminds me of the one from our favorite PARA-PARAAA song. Sorry.

A band playing again, mainly drums and some synths or a keytar or something. Sounds good to me. And... a female voice! First time I've heard a female in this mix.

Smooth and pretty decent voice, she must be an R&B or soul singer of some sort. The mix of a band, high-pitched synths, and this girl's voice is intriguing.

And now a man's voice. I like both their voices. R&B singers have the most calming and sexy voices.

I like it, but I don't know if I'd recommend it to anyone, does that make sense? Like it's really catchy, but it's not that well put together, imo. These two singers, in the context of a band, can create something really beautiful and grand. But I don't really feel that the actual instrumentals work together.

Track 9:

Simple drumbeat, with some sort of male R&B singer. I assume the song name is 'Kaleidoscope Dream' cos he says it a lot. Like the last track, I feel like that it has the potential to be sooo catchy and good, but it doesn't entirely satisfy. Not bad.

Track 10:

Another perfectly seamless transition. How are you doing that? I made no effort to do that on my mixtape. :disappointed: Anyway...

Very pop, very electronic, high-pitched female voice. Pretty different to what this mixtape has been so far. I can tell we're off to a completely new direction. And a male voice joins. He sounds indie. If that makes sense. This is some sort of indie act I'm supposed to know about.

Short but sweet.

Track 11:

God, love at first listen. The guitar and drums are captivating, and the distortion of sound is so pleasing to the ears. Fusion of R&B, electronic, and a bit of rock, I suppose? Best I can describe it is the sound of a club underwater. Holy crap, it's
beautiful
! Thank you.

Track 12:

Sounds like the xx. Minimalist and pretty instrumentals, with a soothing female voice. No complaints here.

Track 13:

Very bubbly and loud intro, very in-your-face compared to the atmosphere of the last tracks. Seems to primarily be a tape replaying? Or some heavy distortion of synths (new drinking game: a shot for every mention of "'90s", "distortion", or "synths". Keel over and profusely vomit by the end of this review)

This is actually quite nice! It grew on me with more listens. It sounds like a mess, but a nice mess. A mess that you'd like to rummage through and roll around in.

Track 14:

More uncannily xx-esque guitar and vocals. A lady vocalizing and a man chattering away. Very chill and very short, I guess this would be an interlude on an album.

Track 15:

Someone playing around on a child's xylophone or something. And now an accordion. Ohhh, I know this! You know why?

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpaonSDPw7Y]MF DOOM - Madvillain - Accordion - YouTube[/ame]

A friend recommended me this album and I enjoyed this song the most. This song is sampled from your track, I guess. You learn something new every day.

Sounds so 'empty' without the rapping, but I must admit, the singer's little vocals near the end are so nice, been replaying it cos of that.

Track 16:

And we're at the end. That went by so fast.

A heartbeat, and then a mix of instruments, going at intervals where it's pretty slow for a few seconds and becomes rapidly fast for the next few seconds. This is basically the basis of the whole song, it's all instrumental. I keep trying to listen to this but it goes in one ear and comes out the other and nothing really stands out at me. It's nice of course; none of the songs that you've chosen have ever made me think 'no, get it over with'. But it's not really interesting, sorry.

---

My favorite tracks are #11, #2, #3. #6 #4, #5, #1, and #12, in that order, I guess.

Who made my mixtape? Hmm... I think it's Malcolm-Edge. I've heard him talk about hip-hop here and there. If not, maybe Twisted Mind, because she's pretty pissed off and impatient right now, and it took me more than a week to do this, ha.

8.75/10

EDIT: Changing this to a 9.5. Not sure what I was thinking :huh2:

A few songs were a bit bland for my taste, most were catchy or fun or really beautiful and entrancing! But nothing I couldn't stand. I could listen to this mixtape all the way though over and over, and I will.

Thanks for making my first mixtape exchange a really unique and interesting one!

^ Five bucks says that's Eddie's tape.
