This is a description of an combination of 2 lines which are in the Coldplay song that I'm looking for.

I made the mistake to add the word "distance" and gave it away. :)

But since there is a whole reasoning behind it, I will give that away too.

To pretend & to cover (up) --> Coldplay did a cover of 2000 miles, a song of The Pretenders

20x = 2000 miles = 20 x 100 miles

 

Swallowed in the sea --> and I could write a song (=to pretend also) a hundred miles long

--> where I was going wrong = the mistake

I didn't think of that 2000 miles thing, but my reasoning was the hundred miles and "where I was going wrong"
