Looking back - Your highs & lows of the Ghost Stories era?

Featured Replies

Now that the final scheduled appearance has ended, what do you think of the Ghost Stories era experience? What are your high and low points (if any)?

The low is certainly not being able to see them live as this was a chance to see them in smaller venues which I dont think will happen again for a while.

The highs though are just how good the album is firstly and how different it was to MX, not taking anything away from MX. I liked that it was intimate and that they took a different approach than other albums. The unexpected release of midnight was something very different to what we are used to. The artwork is also certainly a highlight, really brought the music to life.

Highs:

RAH on the 2nd July- My 1st (and certainly not my last) Coldplay gig!

ASFOS, True Love and Always in my Head are songs that stood out.

The unexpected release of Midnight- So different and so unexpected.

Lows:

Lack of Gigs- I was extremely lucky to see them on this era, but so many people missed out. Will make their return to stadiums all the better though.

High: the album wasn't too bad

Lows: -Not a proper tour

-Small venues, that's great. Seriously, it's awesome. BUT too expensive

-F*cked Latin America, AGAIN (still waiting, Coldplay)

-Overwhealming promotion in the States (there's a whole planet outside that land you know)

-I didn't feel it. The music was still good, but I didn't feel it. That feel, you know what I'm talking about, I had it for a moment; only one moment. It didn't last like it did with the other albums (I'm a new fan but I did have a few weeks of obession with each of the other albums (except X&Y)).

Anyway, SO glad it's finally* over.

**It was actually quite short.

Highs:

--Really solid album with Magic, Midnight and Ink which I constantly have on repeat. Also like bonus tracks!

--Beautiful live DVD and TV special that are truly special.

--AMAZING artwork for this era. Absolutely love it.

--Like the return to a few more melancholic and emotional tracks. Whole album has a cool atmosphere.

Lows

--Didn't like some of the production choices on the albums; sometimes feels a little to glossy and clean on otherwise great tracks (i.e. O, Oceans.)

--ASFOS. I unfortunately am not a fan of this track, both as a single and climax to the album. Melody is good, just not the EDM production.

--No tour! I still haven't got to see them :(

--True Love and ASFOS music videos. The former is their worst to date, right up there with Charlie Brown, didn't achieve its aim imo. The latter was okay, but the song doesn't match the entire aesthetic so it felt awkward. Cool idea though.

Highs:

best production coldplay ever had for an album

the artwork man

there's not a song on the album that i hate

chris martin's fine body

Low:

They neglected half of the world for this tour lmao

Highs:

- The entire era was great. It produced a resurgence of love for the band in me.

Lows:

-ASFOS. I hate everything about it.

-True Love and ASFOS music videos. They might as well not bother with videos anymore.

Highs

Magic was a lovely piece of restrained music, which showed a craftsmanship from the band which we arguably haven't seen since parachutes

O. That is all.

The artwork

No Rihanna

Guitar solo on true love

Ghost Story, All Your Friends being written

Midnights electronica

Lows

ASFOS. That is all.

The overproduced version of AA on the album (guitar solo? What guitar solo?) compared to the brilliant live version we first heard.

The rest of True Love

Insufferable hip hop drums

Ghost Story, All Your Friends being left off.

Those badges/earrings Chris is intent on wearing.

Yeah pretty much all of this. I don't mind ASFOS but it doesn't fit in the album. It's a massive middle finger to the overall sound of the album which was consistent throughout bar that single.

Also the idea of Chris Martin wearing earrings 10 years ago or on the AROBTTH tour would have been enough to bring the house down with laughter. He's above that sort of tackiness.

Overall quality of the lyrics could have been drastically improved as well with the exception of Midnight, O, All Your Friends, Ghost Story.

And of course No Rihanna made it instantly better than MX. A completely overrated talentless hack which cannot be said enough. Also the tour wasn't all that special. There's no need for songs like Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Paradise, Viva La Vida in some small intimate arena. It was a real moment for them to play some long unheard classics....and they failed.

I don't understand why they did this. When they played A Whisper at Royce Hall I thought what a magnificent move. Why not have a show where they replaced all the hits you mentioned above with older classics. There is so much on Parachutes and AROBTTH that we're just dying to witness live. A missed opportunity indeed.

The low and high for me was that I went through something rather difficult last December, so when Ghost Stories came out, it spoke to me like no other album. I could relate to every song, every lyric and line. I went high up and down below on every turn it made. But if anything it made me realize life should be lived full of love and dreams. The sky is always full of stars, and sometimes you honestly do feel like a ghost story. But that's alright because the universe has a way of pulling us back so you can launch into something great. You just need hope and a head full of dreams. ;)

Nice :)

Highs:

- The lyrics hunt! That was SO cool!!!!

- The Magic video with a gloriously hot Chris :wideeyed::wideeyed:

- THE ZANE LOWE INTERVIEW - OHGOD.

One of the best interviews I've listen to/watched of Chris. It really made me understand the direction, the goal, the sound, the meaning of the album much better.

- CONCERT AT LE CASINO DE PARIS :awesome::awesome::awesome::wacky: No words :wacky: So happy to have been there!

- The RAH livestream, really enjoyed it!

- The CD/DVD package :awesome: Whilst Live 2014 was an awesome concert to watch, the one we got for GS actually had quite a few, very very nice goodies!

Lows:

- The lack of a proper tour - even though I understand that they did not want to promote GS as much and in the same way as the others, given how personal and intimate it is for Chris.

- The shortness of most of the concerts they did

- How most of the events were held in LA only

So, basically, not seeing them that much.

Highs: none

Lows: none

it was all bit meh really.

Ok, now sereiously: Chris' interviews were really personal that was good (Zane one is just wow), the TV special/dvd is really nice too.

edit: oh and Midnight, really like that one

Highs:

* The intimate atmosphere/ feel of the album ( with the exception of ASFOS)

* The art work is truly beautiful.

* The unexpected release of Midnight in February.

* The lyrics hunt was lovely.

* Chris did a great job in the Magic video.

* I love the guitar riff in True Love and also the one in Ink (and to sing along to it)

* Seeing them try new things like the laser harp (sorry don't know the name)

* All Your Friends and Ghost Story.

* The DVD ( having another live DVD so quickly after Live 2012 was great considering the previous one was released in 2003)

Now with the Lows

* I'll never understand why All Your Friends and Ghost Story were left out.

* I would have put ASFOS at the very end of the album, but hey that's me!

* Not able to see them live.

* So many gigs in LA and the US in general or always the same bunch of cities ( New York, Paris, Cologne, Sydney)

* Latin America?

* Yeah basically not seeing them live. ( I understand that the album was not meant to be played at big stadiums but it was a bit frustrating when another intimate gig was announced and it was again in LA or Paris or something)

The atmosphere of this album is the best they recorded, really great and unique.

There's only one low and thats the song 'O', i dont like that one, it's boring and monotone.

I'll never understand why All Your Friends and Ghost Story were left out.

Well, i know, they dont fit the rest of the tracklist, they really sound off from the rest of the tracks, the album is perfect this way, expect for 'O'.

Highs: Royal albert hall show that I was fortunate to go to, interviews, the quick turnaround to LP7!

Lows: Small tour, the album didnt connect much with me

Highs:

- Watching the Ghost Stories animation video and hearing Ink for the first time (After Running Downstairs from doing my Homework)

- Nearly every gig was streamed

- The whole production (On the album, the GS live special, the artwork and the LASER HARP)

- Winning a love button from Christa in the raffle

- Winning member of the month for

(I can't remember the month)

Lows:

- I was underwhelmed by Midnight at first (Now one of my favorites when listening to the album) and thinking "So, is this what they're doing now"

- Like many other people, They didn't come to my country (except for the lyrics hunt)

- Some of Chris' vocal performances were poor

Not to much lows really, glad I had this and all of you to go through it with! I'd say there would be more lows if I didn't decide to join this wonderful site!! Thanks to Sparky and all the other members and Mods on the site!!

THE LASER HARP THOUGH!!

HIGHS:

- Atmosphere and texture of each songs included on the album
