What do you think about the future of Coldplay?

Featured Replies

They will take a break.....they need it. During that break they will all look in the mirror and finally realise that they need the old Coldplay to come back cause the way they are going now is just a downward slide.

Then they'll go back in the studio and start making some proper songs and a proper album!

AROBTTH Part 2 coming 2020.

*end of your own personal dream* LOL

And 2020? I hope a bit sooner :)

Though I am one of those people that enjoys the band's newer material as well as older, I am still happy that this album is some sort of ending point for them. As someone too young to have followed them all the way from parachutes, it will be exciting if/when in a handful of years I get to sort of follow the band from a beginning stage.

I can actually see a more jazzy AROBTTH. They should throw in some other instruments like trumpets, clarinets, and even add in a saxophone solo.

I´ve known them since Parachutes, but I share the sentiment of being excited about a brand new phase! I cant wait to see them live (hopefully a couple of times!) and then see what they surprise us with in the future :)

Oh dear Lord let it not be so hahaha I dont know what it is, but I simply cant stand the brass instruments. They give me the worst shivers like nails on a chalkboard hehe Though what you describe would certainly be Jonny´s jazz album haha

I'm guessing the AHFOD era will end sometime in 2017. Then, the band will take an extended hiatus just so they can spend more much needed time with their families.

Wow really?

Still can't stand brass instruments?

What I hope is for them to discontinue after the world tour. I love them as much as everyone else on here but AHFOD reinforced my thoughts that musically they no longer have anything meritorious to offer. Technically they're now no different that Maroon 5 or One Direction and before things get more ridiculous I'd like for them to end it. There is no talking of legacy or grace here, because they don't have any left; it's just what I believe is in the best interest of my favorite band.

Lucky for you guys none of that will happen though. I've been saying since 2008 they're in dire need of a 5-6 year hiatus but it hasn't happened and I doubt it will because of Chris Martin's drive. LP8 will most likely be released around 2018 and will sound different to all they've done so far. I predict a Rap and R&B record with guests such as Drake, Rihanna, Kanye West and possibly Pitbull. Rita Ora will definitely feature. I don't think Coldplay function as a democratic outfit anymore and it's more "Chris Martin and his session musicians", and so his obsession with popular music and trends will dictate their sound for all future projects. They'll continue to sell well but once they're in their mid-40s their already declining relevance and influence will become nonexistent.

Wow really?

Ok this innocent looking small trumpet (dunno its official name) is actually quite harmless to my senses :) Kinda reminds me of other brass which now that I think of it dont bother me in one particular song: The James Bond theme hehe

Still not my favourite sound, but thanks for posting! It was a very nice performance! :) Nice to be exposed to music we dont usually go for :) Any example of a pop/rock song where brass doesn't make me shiver in the bad way? Maybe you know some :)

An example of how brass totally ruined a song for me hehe Around the 5:14 mark. Noel calls it "cool brass" but I just cringe everytime and sadly it totally ruins the vibe of one of my favourite songs ever! hehe

Thanks for that song! Love it. Don't really know Noels solo work. I understand what you mean. That brass makes me think of Sade or something haha. I like Sade, but that vibe is not what you want this song ending with. Saxophone or trumpet makes a difference.

3 of my fav melancholy! songs from the National:

starts around 2:00 (oohh the sober melancholy in this song.. shivers)

starting 2:35

starting 1:20

I guess it's all trumpets.. not sure. I just love the sound of them in the songs. Perfect instrumentation. Saxophone or trumpet makes a big difference. Saxophone makes the vibe much more jazzy.

I wonder if anyone of coldplay ever listens to the National band btw..

Not sure if I missed it, but Of Monsters and Men uses trumpets and other brass in some of their songs. Love them. Maybe it's personal preference, or maybe it's how gracefully it's melded in. It can work though :P

If AHFOD is the last Coldplay album don't worry yet. Chris said they will be releasing a new song in a interview. It was by accident and he wasn't supposed to say it. Also Ricky Gervais is bringing out a album as David Brent from the office and Chris features in a song

A new song won't tell us much, and it's likely to be something along the lines of Atlas/Miracles where it was "asked" upon them to write something for a cause or upcoming event and not a genuine Coldplay song like Christmas Lights. If anything it's just more anxiety for me because even though my expectations have been forcefully beaten down the past 5 years I still hold out for something that will click with me again. I mean even the ETIAW EP didn't prepare us for what we got from MX.

But in a way, Miracles has the vibe of AHFOD and Atlas a bit of the vibe of Ghost Stories, so I think extra songs do reflect the current sound of the band somehow....but agree with you on the rest.

Did he say that they were releasing a new song ? I thought he said that they are going to play (some) new song(s) on the next leg of the tour.

And my interpretation was that they were adding songs of AHFOD or the other albums that were not on the playlist.

I hope that you are right and that I am wrong. [emoji4]

I'd take Everything's Not Lost live again over a new song honestly.

I'd be happy with either interpretation. New songs would provide some much-needed variety, whether they are brand new or just new to the current tour.

When you talk about next leg of the tour, what do you mean? August-Sept USA dates or new dates for 2017?

2017. Could be arena shows during the spring or summer shows to places they haven't visited this leg.

I was talking about the next concerts after this mini break - so starting with Rose Bowl LA 20/8.

Don't know which Chris had in mind.

I actually think there is. At the end of the day, Chris says a lot of stuff that doesn't actually mean much. Frankly they are still a quartet that principally plays piano/synths, guitar, bass and drums. To me, that means they will always be some sort of "rock" band with whatever label you want to give it (acoustic, soft, limestone, pop, etc.) I think the two songs of AHFOD so far are great and are technically rock songs with great instrumentation.

Obviously the boys channel a lot of genres for every album, so who knows, maybe in three years they will be burnt out on pop-dance sounds and say "hey, you know what, I really like Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Johny Cash. Hell, lets do that acoustic folk album with Will on vocals!"

I honestly believe that this is a possibility. You can't be the biggest pop-rock band for two decades straight. Eventually they gotta go dad rock like U2 haha

I think I might disagree with making dad music and not being one of the biggest band for two decades. They will continue to evolve, but the Stones, Peter Gabriel, David Gilmour, Tony Levin, Rush, and others have been around at least that long and have never made dad songs or stopped selling out larger venues.

Ehhhh I think they might try to slowly come back in by dropping a few hints after the hiatus and silencing themselves for a bit to build the anticipation and then springing out, cause hype is gonna draw in people. They're gonna start a new album cycle and I feel like they may go back in the pop route again but put a new spin on it to some degree, since they can experiment but I doubt they'll span too far for their standards of experimentation unless something motivates them to go to viva level experimental again (cause back then they really needed a kick for that). Then again they have a lot more self confidence than they've ever really had at this point and just want to do what they want to do, so we may get something a little "off". They could be a little more daring with more power and control over their own career and influences. Also because of Chris's rather philosophical pursuit of mindfulness and stuff we might get ideas related to the true nature of life and wise reflection- like an old sage- rather than just sappy love, adventurous hope and intense optimism or extreme over analyzing of the unknown and tension, because now they've settled down too.

It's pretty farfetched but if they last long enough I wonder if they'll be put in (or at least nominated) for the rock and roll hall of fame in the future. I know it's usually reserved for legends with greater musical influence (and maybe integrity) but since the relative standard of music shifts constantly, decades from now I feel like it's a possibility.
