It's just a joke about the current pattern of every second album being well received

MX/AHFOD/MOTS - controversial/divisive albums
Viva/GS/EL/MM - mainly loved by the fanbaseΒ

That is true. I've made jokes about that myself (comparing the coldplay albums to the star trek movies). It was 1AM my time when I saw your post so the joke just went over my head.

MOTS the Musical is set to be the worst album of all time at this rate

But Self Titled could be the best so stay excited

If all the tracks believed to be on the musical will end up in the soundtrack, I will have a lot of hope for the album.

However I have no doubt in my mind that the musical film itself will be among the worst films ever made. A Madame Web-level megaflop.

Why do you have no faith in thee film itself? Like I can see the argument that it will fail financially, but why are you judging quality so soon? I am interested in what the instrumental portions of the soundtrack sound like as coldplay have never done that type of thing (they also haven't done true musical numbers so I don't know how that will sound).

I’d say if anyone liked Moon Music but hated MOTS, my guess is that you’ll want to skip the musical altogether. It’s going to be very conceptual and feature aliens from different galaxies singing so this won’t be your typical Coldplay album and will probably annoy a lot of peopleΒ

You’ll want to comeback for LP12 which will sound like their beginnings of the 4 guys playing in a bedroom.Β

Most modern films aren't great, and we have no idea who is in charge of the film bit of the musical film. Chris Martin can have ideas but being able to write a film doesn't come naturally. If it isn't one of the band members, it'll likely be an outsider who won't get the band's vision. I'd be very impressed if it's bearable.

--------------------

On another note, the FLAC version of the album actually has the date the song was encoded (and perhaps the date of the final masters themselves) in the metadata.

  1. Moon Music: 12th June
  2. Feels Like: Ditto
  3. We Pray: 14th June
  4. Jupiter: 11th September
  5. Good Feelings: Ditto
  6. Alien Hits: 24th September
  7. IAAM: 18th June
  8. Aeterna: 17th June
  9. All My Love: 19th August
  10. One World: 17th June

All Blue Moons tracks are dated 23rd September 2024.

I see where you are coming from but I will wait until more info comes out to start making predictions. This is one of the few upcoming films I have any hope in so I am trying to be optimistic.Β

I kind of believe you TBH.Β

For myself, the more "plastic" the band go, my immersion goes with it which is why MOTS didn't speak to me (outside of a couple of tracks).

ButΒ Moon MusicΒ is more grounded - not in my top 5 Coldplay albums, but comfortably aboveΒ MOTS,Β MX, and maybeΒ AHFOD.Β

Jokes aside I'm keeping my hopes up for the musicalΒ

The Moon Music title track has fairly narrative based lyrics, so I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of the music was along the lines of that. Earthling also has narrative based lyrics and is quite similar in that regard. Both songs + Weirdo are excellent, so if that's the direction they're going in it could be really good. If the Alien themed songs are more Angelsong and less Biytyful then all the better. Add on top of that the musical will (allegedly) have no singles, so there's less incentive to make a big obnoxious My Universe style song. Musical soundtracks are traditionally quite orchestral as well, so there's a good chance of having a ton of John Metcalfe and Davide Rossi on there.Β

idk. With Moon Music I got the vibe the band were slowly wrapping up the "pop" phase of their career and are moving into more low-key introspective stuff to finish up on. MM feels like the transitional album between the two. I could be very wrong of course.Β

But about the musical, do we know for sure that it is going to be done? Or is it just another rumor?

It sounds very strange to me.

Chris has confirmed it multiple times over interviews. The thing I am curious about is whether the X&Y reworked is actually being made.

I wouldn't say they're quitting pop altogether but I do have a similar feeling, specially because of the aesthetic. It's more subdued, hand-made, the band are wearing less colorful clothes, didn't shaved, etc. Just look at the difference:

Guy mentioned that each member picks their own clothes from the main piece to the patches, so I wouldn't say they were trying too hard on MOTS or anything, but the fashion choices from MM are much closer to what the band wear on their everyday life (no pun intended). Ironically, I think they look more youthful in the most recent photoshoot.

Another thing that got my attention was how album-oriented the promotion for Moon Music was: the pre-orders were launched early, non-singles had marketing push (IAAM and Good Feelings), the first television performances were only last month, etc. They were very much ready for the possibility of not scoring a hit and made sure to get headlinesΒ through huge debutsΒ and career achievements. I think the concerts being a ridiculously huge success possibly made them realize that being a touring force is not related to chart numbers, so there's less pressure.Β Additionally, the hate MOTS received, whileΒ disproportionate, might have set some boundaries that influenced latter releases (ex. the majority of the fandom don't fuck with Angel Moon, so don't put her at the center).Β  Β

I think someone asked about that fairly recently and Chris shut that idea down pretty quickly.Β

Oh man, that's sucks.Β

I don't hate X&Y but I was curious to see how their version would be like.Β

Now that it’s been over a month since release, where do you all have the album ranked on your lists?

Β

Everyday Life

Viva a Vida or Death and All of His Friends

A Rush of Blood to the Head

Parachutes

Mylo Xyloto

Moon Music

X&Y

Ghost Stories

A Head Full of Dreams

Music of the SpheresΒ

Β

I think it’ll stay in the 5-7 range going forward.Β
