  1. Hooray for Vettel! :D Great race. :nice:
  2. I love xkcd. Though posting them here means you don't get to read the little hidden punchline that's usually funnier than the first one. :laugh3: Well, I have to say I argue with people less now that I've seen it.
  3. So I'm a couple of weeks early. But I thought since there seem to be quite a few new albums coming out in the next month or two, this would be a good time to get people thinking. You can post your lists-in-progress in this thread. I'll update this post with details as they are decided, and get the big campaign kicked off at the start of October. For anyone unfamiliar with our annual list, check out the 2006 discussion thread. Once again, thanks to Nik for starting it all. And yes, I am well aware that I need to finish the links in the 2007 countdown...
  4. Ladies and Gentlemen, the time has again come to have a good long look at the music world around us and ask "What albums did we like this year?". The Deal: Make a list of 5 to 25 original albums released in 2008. Rank determines the points an album gets. The Deadline: Wednesday, December 17th at 4:00pm EST (9:00pm GMT) A note: EPs, split 2007/2008 releases that made the 2007 list, reissues, and live albums do not count. So no In Rainbows, Prospekts March, or Haarp, but Oracular Spectacular is fine since the digital release was not voted for last year. 5. All together now: AWWW! :nice: :laugh3:
  6. Sorry to rain on the parade, but they're only testing that the big magnets work tomorrow. They won't start colliding particles into each other- the process people are worried about- for another couple of months.
  7. Forgotten? What about Sweet Marianne- that has an awesome riff. Or Ladder to the Sun... or the first World Turned Upside Down (the U2 sounding one)... Ditto! :D It's like Clock's twisted cousin, all swirly and spinning out of control. Love, love, love Daylight too.
  8. Hope Noel's ok. Sounds like he's been hurt pretty bad. :( Messed up ribs can be nasty. What a trooper finishing the show like that. Why do the psychos have to be from Canada lately anyway? :inquisitive: Hope Liam landed a couple of those punches on the moron. On a happier note, loving what's out of the new songs.  Can't wait for the album. Such a wonderful grasp of basic physics you have. :dozey:
  9. Elbow! :stunned: Good for them. About time someone noticed them. Now if only it was enough for someone to notice them over here. Not likely. Still think Burial should have won, though. Although after the fiasco with the Sun, maybe it would have been better for him not to have been nominated at all... :\
  10. ^26 and more of a teenager than I was 10 years ago. :P Don't worry, senior year everything gets thrown at you pretty fast, but after that you have another oh, 17 years or so before society expects you to grow up and take much of any responsibility for yourself. That's the great thing about being a 20-something these days, you can look after yourself as much or as little as you want to. ...not that you can get a high enough paying job out of college to afford rent anyway, nowadays...:(
  11. Aniseed flavored candy? Seriously? Weird... I'm slightly repulsed, yet I want to try them. There's a store here that has all sorts of random British candy, wonder if they carry them...
  12. Holy.... ! Case and point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHKgnaTCXgc Just found it. Now I have chills. Anyone know what that last piece on the end is?
  13. X&Y has some fantastic songs, but it was overproduced. I get that a lot of people really love it, and I totally respect that. It's still worlds better than most pop music out there, so it doesn't surprise me that fans would get into the band through it and would care for it a lot. And if you happen to like that dense poppy style of production you might, like many people, even think it's their best album, and that's fair. ;) But like people have said, it's the one album that I don't sit down with a book and get lost in. I never listen to it all in one go. I don't connect to it in the way that I connect to their other albums (and even b-sides) on some visceral emotional level that sinks down into my subconscious in a way I'm not sure how to describe. I always like acoustic versions of the songs off it better, when there aren't so many unnecessary layers and synths so that the bones of the song can really shine through. The recent performance of the Hardest Part is a perfect example. It's my least favorite Coldplay song ever, pretty much, but when it was just Chris and a piano with a different pace and focus, all the little hairs on my neck stood on end and the song opened up in a way it never had before. It was brilliant. If the album version had been like that- if the album had been like that, I would have liked it. Goodness, even the special radio single mix of "What If" was better than the album version. It's almost the same, but those subtle little inexplicable things make a huge difference. And maybe that was just it. Being a fan for a while meant knowing what was missing once I got my head around the album. It's sort of like how a person who only ever listens to an ipod thinks the sound is fine, while someone who routinely listens to an expensive high-end stereo system would notice what the ipod was messing up. Viva la Vida is the album that I had hoped X&Y would be- full of life, big one moment and acousticy the next, still Coldplay but fresh and adventurous and growing as a band. In fact I never thought this possible since AROBTTH is my favorite album of all time, but I think I love VLV more than anything else they've done so far. :shocked2: It was all just a blip, a growth pain, (an understandable one considering how fast they've grown) and now the best side of the band is back. :D Hooray for Coldplay!!!
  14. Yep. It's a pity more people don't get and don't bother to get Chris' sense of humor. It's hard to think of someone that crazy and funny as boring.
  15. ^I saw that on the news... :( didn't look fun. We're not having it much better- rainiest summer I can remember. Storm after storm after storm, and they rotate overhead for weeks at a time. Some parts of the province have been flooded pretty bad already this week, and Hanna is supposed to hit those areas directly tomorrow. Don't know how they're going to handle it. Let's hope it doesn't pick up steam right before it hits us like Juan did. News is saying that the power will probably be out for a few days if many trees fall from the winds. :worried:
  16. Well I survived my first week. Ache all over from walking long distances with a heavy backpack. Still can't fall asleep before midnight even though I'm getting up around 6am now... makes class interesting. But I'm liking it. Electronics means lots of fun toys to play with! :D
  17. Heh, I was just reading something about that a second ago... http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/09/05/lhc-safety.html
  18. Technically fewer is right. But really it depends on whether you're using formal language or not. In a store, either would work as well, whatever the grammar nazis say, and if you're trying to fit it on a sign, less is certainly easier. (And sounds better.)
  19. What a load of rubbish. Sure I'll agree that preferences may have something to do with personality, but they're shoving spectrums into little boxes that don't quite fit, and aren't nessesarily relevant.
  20. EEP! First day at the new place tomorrow. Don't know a single person. Will probably be the only girl in my class. Wasn't nervous at all until about 2 hours ago. :uhoh: What am I doing up this late again? Oh yeah, panicking. :stunned: eta: and still don't know how to change my mood icon...
  21. woot! "singing la la la la la la lehey!" :D
  22. I like the short hair. :D I've always though it looks best just barely long enough to start curling a little. Goodness it does highlight how skinny he is, though.
  23. Reilly? I was talking about my own opinions. :P He was just being a jerk on purpose because he's Reilly. :laugh3: I was miserable when this thread was started because no one would talk about anything else at all. And it did make things better. Now with several years, hindsight, and a good healthy topic balance, it's funny. :jester:
