1. After all these years I’m terrible at looking for leaks. Already preordered the notebook edition and plan on streaming in Dolby Atmos tomorrow night, but after going to the listening event yesterday I really want to go back a revisit the album already. Can anyone at least point me in the right direction for the HQ version? Even if it’s through a DM. Would greatly appreciate it.
2. Every time I see people talking about “The Race” I remember when we couldn’t stop talking about “Car kids” ?. If you know, then you’ve been on this sub for awhile…
3. You should’ve been here when Mylo Xyloto was leaked.. good times. But this is the most excitement I’ve seen in some time
4. Ok after nearly 5 months.. I think I'm ready to give a full review. I am not a "newplayer". But I wouldn't call myself an "oldplayer" either. I am not a music professional nor do I understand all the elements that go into music composition or production. I do however have a great music appreciation. I listen to music with my heart and Coldplay have always spoke to my heart. I wholeheartedly understand when people criticize this album for being, among other things, overly/poorly produced, lyrically weak, too mainstream/generic pop. I do not understand when they say it's soulless or heartless. I guess that can be attributed to the fact we all have different hearts. Mine loves this album. Here's why: AHFOD: A truly great explosive start to the album. What a way to set the tone for a true pop album while still keeping what makes Coldplay, Coldplay. Guys bass line to kick things off just gets your heart thumping. The way the drums build to Johnny's guitar riff. Chris's understated vocals are joyous and hopeful. There are some great lyrics here too, "leave your broken windows open, and in the light just streams". I agree that the "ooohhhs" are wearing slightly thin, but here they actually work, very euphoric. All in all a great opener. 4.5/5 Birds: Love the electronica pop feel of this one. Was my favorite the first time I heard it. Best lyrics on the album, yeah even the you're so cool bit. Guys bass is so foot stompingly delicious you have to dance. Johnny's guitar adds a dreamy weightless feel to this one. Will keeps a great beat throughout. Chris's vocals are vulnerable yet uplifting. And the strings that lead to the abrupt ending just kill me every time. I really do feel free and like I'm flying with this song, still my favorite on the album. 5/5 HFTW: Fun song, but can old quick. Cheesy unusual lyrics for Coldplay. Nothing really memorable for me who the exception of the bridge, Johnny's guitar rift there and the shoot across the sky part are my favorites. Despite my complaints with this song, I rarely skip, unlike POC where I almost always skip. I guess it just fits the overall album very well I can't get myself to skip it. Decent song. 2.5/5 I'll have the rest of my review up later, if anybody cares lol.
5. Woah just listened to it again on really good speakers and there is a very good chance Chris is also screaming along with the guitar(kinda like the end of ink.. Only way better lol) Interesting!
6. Setlist fm says they played spies!!?? I don't believe it. Can anyone confirm this? Edit: false alarm.. Someone's just messing with me lol
7. I could not disagree more.. If anything newer Coldplay songs are probably TOO layered for those that prefer the more organic, warm feel(my wife among those lol. Just glad she liked AHFOD). Not trying to start anything here, just my opinion. Lyrically I do agree that earlier work was definitely closer to masterpiece level then the common radio level they find themselves at now, in terms of lyrics.
8. While I love all Coldplay albums, I can definitely see what your saying. I think that's one of the reasons they're production has become more, for lack of a better word "sugary" over the last few albums. Perhaps he should take a page from a band called the helio sequence, the singer damaged his vocal chords and had to relearn how to sing. This changed his entire singing style but led to an amazing evolution in sound. Maybe we should tell Chris he doesn't have to cover up his voice so much with production, and instead he could learn to sing different while still keeping the "Coldplay" sound. Just my two cents
9. I'll be there with my wife!! Have you seen them live before??
10. Don't know if I got good seats, just happy we're going!! From the looks of the visual tour I'm a lot closer then the time I went to see Cowboys on thanksgiving so that's great!
11. Got mine for Arlington!! First show since viva tour, and first show with my wife, we missed the mylo tour and we were not going to miss this one!!
12. Curious as to what oldplayers think of the rest of the bands current progression and or regression? Most criticism of newplay songs seems to be directed at, in no particular order, weak or empty lyrics, poor production choices, boring or repetitive song/chord progressions or structure, and lack of defining or memorable melodies( disclaimer: these are NOT my beliefs, just what I've seen here). Most of these things I think could be blamed on the frontman and lead songwriter, aka Chris Martin.. So my question to you guys and gals is, do you think musically speaking the rest of the band has done anything interesting or special in the last 8 years? Anything to suggest that they are progressing as musicians and are simply being held back by this desire to be mainstream?(again, mainly Chris's desire I believe). Just curious as to what your thoughts on the individual band members current state is.. Sorry if this is too long lol [emoji12]
13. Army of one Saying my heart is my gun, army of one
Yeah my heart is my gun, army of one
It's my only weapon, army of one
Yeah my heart is my gun, army of one Hurts like heaven Oh you use your heart as a weapon
And it hurts like heaven
14. Oh don't get me wrong, there are some great songs since MX, in fact I like the last 3 albums very much. But even the examples you gave our, similar.. But different. I don't know how to explain it, but I doubt they'll ever capture the same magic from the older albums. I think the best oldplayers could hope for would be that they capture a whole new kind of magic that isn't pop produced or sugar coated. Maybe something electronic or pop rock but not so mainstream. Or maybe an album of unreleased gems from the past (very very very unlikely). But my music library is safe with all my favorite music from the past, Coldplay and others.
15. Although I do not consider myself an oldplayer.. I do sorely wish for an album that's as warm and intimate as parachutes.. It feels like a warm blanket on a cold winter night. Not to mention the instrumentation was simple, inspired and profound. Very minimalistic in the best possible way. Even if it's just a short ep, I would die for that sound again. That said I enjoy their newer albums for what they are, but nothing has come close to parachutes and viva for me
16. Very interesting analysis.. I believe it's where they're at as people that is transmitting this emotion.. Possibly why my wife has always hated MX but actually quite liked this album. She says that MX felt like a forced joy/happiness whereas this one actually seems like they are happy or at least in much better place.(those are her feeling, I have my own opinion on that matter, but I posted that somewhere else :)) Also musically i agree with your points, seeing people bring out the negative things and then re examining for myself I have discover many musical gems that I quite adore.
17. Not weird at all! A lot of people actually love the album I believe, just the loudest voices are always going to be the negative ones.. Look at the user names of people who just utterly hate the album, it's basically the same 5 people..(not to say there aren't more who hate it) I myself love it, and at times while reading through these post want to present a defense, but I know the type of people who hate this album, I have close friends who are the type who would hate this album. There is no reasoning with them. None. They're opinion is God to them. So enjoy the album, like many of us are. I think many agree it's not their masterpiece( so far that's VLV or AROBTTH IMO) but it's not by any stretch of MY imagination a bad record. Who knows maybe one day I'll make a "in defense of AHFOD" thread, but for now I'll just enjoy some good music and good vibes.
18. Up&up Up&up vs a wolf at the door (radiohead)
19. I agree, both sides are trying to convince each other that they're right, and neither side is going to budge on the issue. It was slightly entertaining in the beginning. Now it's as repetitive as Chris's "woooaaahhs" lol. Unless somebody brings a new argument to either side I think we should just let this thread die for awhile.
20. It's terrible to you.. But anyway, just to have some constructive conversation, do you think they can do anything to regain your respect?
21. I'm just curious.. Did you hate MX and GS as well?
22. This thread.. Is like a train wreck.. It's terrible, but I can't look away [emoji50]
23. Very fine post.. I must say that I can see where you're coming from. However I do not see AHFOD as a simple celebration of all his riches, lifestyle etc.. Rather as almost a pep talk he's giving to himself in his own head. When I hear AHFOD, I hear a broken man who is trying to convince himself he's happy to be alive, and I can relate to those feelings perfectly. Perhaps the sugary pop production takes away from that, but I believe that to be purposeful. Same as GS. I don't think Chris truly wants to share his emotions, yet he does. It's a contradiction. In fact I believe he may be more torn and full of anxiety then ever before, that's why he has to hide it. Parachutes- x&y were more heart in sleeve and passionate cause he could handle it, not anymore. So we get a revolutionary concept album, a comic book sci-fi concept album, an attempt to be sincere album and an attempt to be happy album. I think Chris is "lost!".. I hope he finds his way and then we can get more intimate, passionate songs. Or he could just be a rich bastard living it up, lol. But I hear what I hear, and you hear what you hear. The human mind is a beautiful, strange thing
