With November approaching in a couple of days, I was just wondering if any of you on here are doing NaNoWriMo this year? Or have participated in the past? I've been wanting to do it for a couple of years now but haven't been bold enough to jump in the craziness that is writing 50,000 word novel in a month. For those who have done it, any tips? Did you get to 50,000 words? What did you write about?

David Tennant has announced his decision to quit Doctor Who at the end of 2009. The actor confirmed the news while collecting the award for 'Outstanding Drama Performance' at the National Television Awards. "In January I go back to make four new specials which take Doctor Who through to the end of 2009," he said. "But when Doctor Who returns in 2010, it won't be with me. The 2009 shows will be my last playing the Doctor." Tennant added: "If I don't take a deep breath now and move on, I never will. I think it's best I don't outstay my welcome." Speaking after the announcement, outgoing executive producer Russell T Davies said he was "delighted" for Tennant.…

A vicar in Yorkshire has had a potato removed from his bottom after claiming that he fell on it while hanging curtains naked. Nurse Trudi Watson of Sheffield Northern General Hospital recalled how the unnamed clergyman in his 50s arrived at the A&E ward with the embarrassing problem. She told local newspaper The Star: "He explained to me, quite sincerely, he had been hanging curtains naked in the kitchen when he fell backwards on to the kitchen table and on to a potato. "It's not for me to question his story. He had to undergo surgery to have it removed." Other foreign bodies removed at Sheffield A&E units reportedly include a can of deodorant, a carna…

The English is clear enough to lorry drivers - but the Welsh reads "I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated." When officials asked for the Welsh translation of a road sign, they thought the reply was what they needed. Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council said in Welsh: "I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated". So that was what went up under the English version which barred lorries from a road near a supermarket. "When they're proofing signs, they should really use someone who speaks Welsh," said journalist Dylan Iorwerth. Swansea Council became lost in translation when…

Rock band Feeder have escaped from an explosive motorway crash without any injuries. The group were on the M62 heading to Lincoln after a gig at Glasgow Barrowlands on Friday night when their tour bus crashed and then exploded. Officials closed the motorway but there were no serious injuries, a statement from the group confirmed. "Everybody is safe, but all the merchandising and catering is destroyed. All the crew were left in their pants - JD Sports kindly dressed them all today." The statement added that the remainder of the band's UK tour will go ahead unaffected. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a133736/feeder-safe-after-tour-bus-explodes.html

  9. Swindon has became the first town in the UK to do away with fixed-point speed cameras. The nine-strong cabinet of the Tory-run council voted unanimously in favour of withdrawing from the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership. The idea of withdrawing was first suggested 12 months ago by Peter Greenhalgh, councillor for highways in Swindon. This came after a change to the way fixed-point cameras were funded. Mr Greenhalgh objected to central Government receiving the cash from fines while Swindon Council had to pay for the upkeep of the cameras. Speaking tonight after the vote, he said: “I understand we are the first council in Britain to get rid of…

  10. Jack Frost is obviously a little more impatient than usual this year. Just two days after the end of British Summertime, the first snowfall of the season turned large swathes of the country white last night. Even London was hit by a light dusting last night - the first time the capital has seen snow in October since 1934. Snow joke: A commuter cycles home in snowy Coventry, cutting a track through the fresh layer A car heads through blizzard-like conditions in Stevenage, Hertfordshire That was the year footballer Stanley Matthews first pulled on an England jersey, Adolf Hitler became Fuhrer and Alcatraz prison opened its gates off San Francisco. 12. okay, so i was watching TCM the other day, and they were playing this movie, and i came in about one thrid of the way. VINCENT PRICE is in it. i know that. it was probably made in... the 40s or 50s? so he plays this guy who lives in a castle, and he wears a mask all the time. he has a wife. he doesn't love her though, and he always cheats. so he gets this doctor to come live with him, and he tells him why he wears the mask all the time. he used to be a peasant, and his father would always get him and his wife lottery tickets. so one night after his father gets him a lottery ticket, he dies in his sleep. then later on he finds out from a friend that the lottery…

  13. There's a lot of misunderstanding out there about what got the US economy into trouble, particularly among politicians (who I can only assume are either willfully ignorant or purposefully trying to mislead the public). The source of the problem is the housing bubble, which is now burst. Over the past decade, home prices have risen faster than inflation. The reason for this is because it was easy to get a home-loan, regardless of your credit or income. Politicians are saying there was a "lack of regulation," which would have stopped these lenders from being too "greedy". That's hogwash. The reason banks made so many bad loans has to do with the "Community Reinves…

A 47-year-old man has revealed how his skin colour changed to orange due to excessive cider drinking. Michael Stenning lost his job as a courier and began to drink more than four litres of cider a day. When his two children saw that he was becoming orange, they advised him to seek medical help. "When they noticed I was turning orange it was the last straw," he told The Telegraph. "I had to do something." Dr. Sumita Verma, who specialises in alcoholic hepatitis, claimed that Stenning's survival was miraculous: "I have never seen someone as sick as him leave the hospital alive." Stenning, whose skin is gradually beginning to return to its natural colour since he…

The Leopard Man Of Skye has moved to a retirement home after spending 20 years living in the wild. Once the world's most tattooed man, Tom Leppard is covered from head to toe in £5,500 worth of inked leopard spots. The 73-year-old has lived in a ruined bothy on the island of Skye for two decades, canoeing miles to get his shopping every week. Leppard told The Telegraph: "I was perfectly happy in the bothy but I'm like everyone else - I'm getting too old for that kind of life. "I had to canoe to Kyle once a week for shopping and it was getting too hard for me - I was one big wave away from disaster. It's a pretty nasty stretch of water. "About six weeks ago,…

  16. She hasn't so much as been to Africa on holiday. But British-born Catherine Machala Bennett could face deportation to Ghana after falling victim to a nightmarish case of identity fraud. It was bad enough when she learned that an illegal immigrant had been using a duplicate copy of her passport to live in this country. The real Mrs Bennett duly informed police about the scam and the imposter was jailed for fraud and told she would be sent back to her homeland on her release. Farcically, however, the woman refused to give her real name and was jailed under her illegally assumed one - and that was where Mrs Bennett's problems really began Months later, she had to under…

  17. A passenger on a French train had to be rescued by firemen after having his arm sucked down the on-board toilet. The 26-year-old victim was trapped when he tried to fish out his mobile phone, which had fallen into the toilet bowl, and fell foul of the suction system. The high-speed TGV train had to stop for two hours while firemen cut through the train's pipework. The man was carried away by emergency services, with the toilet still attached to his arm. 'He came out on a stretcher, with his hand still jammed in the toilet bowl, which they had to saw clean off,' said Benoit Gigou, a witness to the man's plight. The incident happened on Sunday evening, aboard a train…

Every year thousands of recently deceased people are buried not by their loved ones, but by their local council - often because they have no known family to make the arrangements. Who attends these funerals and how are they organised? As the plain wooden coffin holding Michael Disney's body is lowered slowly into an unmarked grave, the mourners who knew him are out-numbered by people there because they are paid to be. If he had any family, none of them turned up. The handful of friends hunched against a chill wind under a granite-grey autumn sky knew Michael from the streets or from prison. The rest are from the funeral directors or the council. The only sign …

  19. An eight-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair. Christopher Bizilj from Connecticut, lost control of the weapon while firing it when he attended the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the 375-acre Westfield Sportsman's Club in Massachusetts. The boy was with a certified instructor and 'was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury,' police said. He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. Though police said the incident was 'purely accidental,' a combined investi…

A Japanese man has the ability to write calligraphy using water he squirts from his own eyes. Ru Antig inhales water through his nose then shoots it out from his tear ducts. The victims were named locally as pilot Sharif Booz, his wife Margaret, who is from Newbridge in Co Kildare, and teenage son Ayman.
