But research has revealed that a firm handshake is what really matters when it comes to impressing potential employers. A $700 billion financial rescue plan was sent to Congress Saturday, and Democrats moved quickly to propose changes—including possible help for homeowners and a salary cap for CEOs. Democrats also are pushing for a new $100 billion economic stimulus package, although it's not clear if that would be part of the Wall Street bailout or be voted on separately. The Bush admistration's plan to move toxic mortgage-related debt off the balance sheets of U.S. banks and other institutions—and into a massive government portfolio—represents an all-out attack on the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Under authority sought by the Treasury Department, the gove…

The producer of at least three television shows that you may quite like shares with us his definitive list of books that just aren't worth the bother Richard Wilson Recommended lists of ‘essential’ reading are the most pernicious ‘to do’ lists of all. Lists of physical achievements or magical holiday destinations or wonderful restaurants or fabulous hotels make you feel like your life has been wasted; a list of great books you should have read makes you feel like your brain has been wasted. Most people embarking on a journey into a new book will feel they have to hack through a hundred pages of dense undergrowth before their conscience will allow them to give…

It regularly tops polls for the funniest film ever made, yet for almost three decades Monty Python's Life of Brian has remained out of bounds to residents of Torquay. Organisers of a comedy film festival in the seaside resort next week have been obliged to get special dispensation after discovering that the film was still on the local authority's blacklist, 28 years after its release. The film, which starred the late Graham Chapman as Brian “He's not the Messiah” Cohen, with John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, was attacked by Christian leaders when it came out for allegedly lampooning Jesus. Chapman played a character mistaken for the Messia…
