A Bristol woman has become the first person to skydive over the world's highest mountain. 29-year-old Holly Budge jumped out of a plane at nearly 30,000 feet and flew towards Everest in a special parachute which allowed her to float on thin mountain air. She described the experience as "amazing, just spectacular". "We had one minute of freefall and, while we were above the clouds, you could see Everest popping out of the top," she said. The daredevil added that the £17,000 cost to perform the stunt was worth it. "It is something that has never been done before," she said.

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear swore 52 times in the space of five minutes at a recent press conference. Kinnear, who has been vilified in the media for taking on a short-term job that a host of other managers had turned down, kicked off the conference by calling a tabloid journalist "a c***". The football boss then launched into a tirade when the journalist asked him why he had given the team the day off on his first day in charge. "It is none of your f****** business," Kinnear said. "What the f*** are you going to do? You ain't got the balls to be a f****** manager. F****** day off. Do I want your opinion? Do I have to listen to you?" As the press conf…

A man in Croatia has caught a bullet intended for his wife in his false teeth. Stipe Cavlovic, 37, and his wife Mirna were arguing with another man about an overdue debt when the men took out a pistol and fired at the couple. Despite shooting at close range, the assailant only grazed Mirna's cheekbone and the bullet ricocheted towards Stipe, after which it caught in his dentures and fell to the ground. "I thought I was dead for sure... I didn't even see the bullet hit my wife. I just saw the flash of the gun's barrel," he told the authorities. "The next thing I knew was something hit my false tooth and I spat out the hot lead. It hurt like hell but we're both …

The 65-year-old actress, who played Pauline Fowler on the BBC One soap, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease in January this year. She has previously fought breast cancer twice. "I went for my usual annual check-up and they found that some cancer cells had returned in my left armpit," Wendy explained. Richard told the Sunday Express newspaper that she has already made out her will and discussed plans for her funeral. "The drugs I was given to help had an adverse effect. If anything, they did more damage than good so my health has really deteriorated," she continued.…

Who Caused the Economic Crisis? There's plenty of blame to go around, and it doesn't fasten only on one party or even mainly on what Washington did or didn't do. As The Economist magazine noted recently, the problem is one of "layered irresponsibility ... with hard-working homeowners and billionaire villains each playing a role." Here's a partial list of those alleged to be at fault: * The Federal Reserve, which slashed interest rates after the dot-com bubble burst, making credit cheap. * Home buyers, who took advantage of easy credit to bid up the prices of homes excessively. * Congress, which continues to support a mortgage tax deduction that gives consumers…

Committed to the Kyoto Protocol, New Zealand promised to cut its emissions to 1990 levels. The country's biggest source is methane from cattle, and as Stephen Evans discovers, the issue is raising a stink among local farmers. Frank Brenmuhl is a bluff New Zealand farmer who could talk the hindlegs off a donkey and, more to the point, off a politician proposing to tax the gas that comes out of his cows. Mr Brenmuhl has just turned 60 and he has been a dairy farmer on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand since he was 29. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/7646857.stm

So imagine John Dent’s astonishment when he wandered into his kitchen – and spotted a kingfisher calmly perched beside his teapot. Just In case you didn't hear... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7651060.stm House backs $700bn bail-out plan The US House of Representatives has passed a $700bn (£394bn) government plan to rescue the US financial sector. I think this quote from the BBC's have your say section sums it up "Bush has done Al-Queda's job for them. Kovan Pillai " If we re-elect the politicians who passed this bill, I will have lost my faith in the American public as well. That includes McCain and Obama who supported this Bill. The huge majority was against this, not its time to see if we actually have a pubic capable of doing anything.
