Black Rose
Death Cab For Cutie cover The Cure on new compilation Death Cab For Cutie are covering The Cure's 'Lovesong' and Katy Perry is remaking Sam Sparro's 'Black And Gold' for a forthcoming Valentine's Day-themed compilation. Starbucks Entertainment is set to release 'Sweetheart: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs' on January 30 in the US. The second instalment of this series also includes Richard Hawley covering Gordon Lightfoot, New Pornographers' frontman AC Newman's take on A-Ha's 'Take On Me', and a remake of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' 'I Put A Spell On You' by She & Him, which features Death Cab For Cutie frontman's new fiancé Zooey Deschanel. The album tracklisting is: Death Cab for Cutie - 'Lovesong' (Cure cover) Katy Perry - 'Black and Gold' (Sam Sparro cover) DeVotchKa - 'Hot Burrito #1 (I'm Your Toy)' (Flying Burrito Brothers cover) Department of Eagles - 'Love Me' (Elvis Presley cover) Jessica Lea Mayfield - 'Words of Love' (Buddy Holly cover) Ben Bridwell - 'Your Love Is Forever' (George Harrison cover) Kate Tucker - 'I'm on Fire' (Bruce Springsteen cover) Rogue Wave - 'Maps' (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover) A.C. Newman - 'Take on Me' (a-ha cover) Jem - 'Yellow' (Coldplay cover) Richard Hawley - 'Early Morning Rain' (Gordon Lightfoot cover) Daniel Martin Moore - 'I Hear Music' (Billie Holiday cover) She & Him - 'I Put a Spell on You' (Screamin' Jay Hawkins cover) Lila Downs - 'My One and Only Love' (Frank Sinatra cover) --------- I wonder if that would be available in the UK. RadioMad
I heard the singer is engaged to Zooey Deschanel. F*cking lucky bastard. I hate him. edit: No, I don't. He's cool, I guess. But still.... damnit.

This made me laugh: For you to be in any way remotely amped about this story, the following things have to not make you want to barf: Starbucks, Valentine's Day, NPR-sounding MOR indie, Katy Perry blatantly grabbing for indie cred, cutesy fake-vintage cover art, the idea of anyone covering Coldplay for anything other than a joke, love in general. Black Rose
I wasn't going to buy it, just download it :P Mainly for the Department of Eagles and Richard Hawley.
Corkus
F*cking lucky bastard. I hate him. The exact words that popped into my head when I read the news earlier this month. Ben Gibbard may be a talented person, but Zooey is a totally frickin' sexy talented person who I've fawned over ever since Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (oddly enough, her band is also listed on this same compilation album) On another note, Ben recently did a collaboration with Feist to be put on a charity album. It was streaming on MySpace a few days ago, but seems to have been taken down now.

Naish
I have one of their albums, but everytime I listen I just skip to "I Will Posses Your Heart" and ignore the rest of the album, what a song
Corkus
^ Narrow Stairs isn't their best album, but there's still some good stuff besides IWPYH to check out. "Bixby Canyon Bridge" is my favorite Death Cab album opener. The first half of the album is quite good, actually. The second half fizzles a bit, but isn't a bad listen. MrMagpie
What Death Cab is classic? And what are some songs I'll need to know for the concert?
Ms Magpie
Transatlanticism I Will Follow You Into the Dark :nice:
Corkus
Never been to a DCFC concert, but in terms of mainstream hits: - Soul Meets Body - I Will Follow You Into the Dark - I Will Possess Your Heart And to a lesser extent: - The New Year - Title & Registration - Crooked Teeth - Cath Though I'd get familiar with most material from Transatlanticism, Plans, and especially Narrow Stairs (being the latest album they want to promote). I'm not sure what the fanbase is for anything earlier than Transatlanticism.

Bonus_mosher
'I will follow you into the dark' is their best and 'Your Heart is an empty room' 'Plans' is the best album lol
deaths_friend
^^ personally i preferred Narrow Stairs, easier to listen to
strawberryfields
What I didn't like about Narrow Stairs was the lyrics. Death Cab (well, Ben Gibbard) has come up with some of the most incredible song lyrics I've ever seen, and Narrow Stairs seemed to lack those entirely. Compared to their other albums, the songs were just good beats with a lot of repeating words and phrases. It was nice to listen to, but wasn't nearly as brilliant as Plans or Transatlanticism, I think.
