I talk shit about Coldplay

The Reckoner 00

hahaha

albie. classic. I'm nowhere near his realm of shit-stirring.

Here's how I see it. A band of wonderful (and humble) lads got together and created something intimate and beautiful. The world agreed that it was good, so the pressure was on to create something just as good, or even greater. The pressure grew and grew and the oven was cooking full heat. The Fab Four, not wanting to disappoint, let success go to their heads and allowed themselves to be influenced by the press and felt they had to create something so huge that it would fill all the arenas of the world.

They succeeded in creating much bombast in the music, but they lost the intimacy in the rafters of those huge arenas. The beauty turned out to be that lost balloon from the last auto show that winter.

After they released their bombastic second album and began touring and filling HUGE arenas everywhere they went, they began to believe that yes, they were the greatest thing that ever happened to music. They lost their focus. They lost their grip on the beginning and the beauty they had once known. Then they got REALLY famous because of a certain love affair. They soon got around to creating their third album that lacked even more in emotion, but made up for it by burying the vocals in a sea of sound. Unfortunately, some of the more painful lyrics, i.e. poorly written, were still brought to the forefront of the music, embarassing even the worst of amateur poets.

It's a sad tale of fame and lost roots. It seems to happen all to often. Band gets famous and forgot how they got there and all is lost.

if that's really what you think, you haven't been paying much attention, have you? Every single article I've read on them in the last 3 months have been them denying stardom and being incredibly humble. They're still just four boys making great music together.

annnnd you are here becaaause...?

go away. i'm listening to one of Coldplay's newest songs right as we speak and it's a beautiful song, thank you

First off... look at my start date. Look at yours. Don't start with me.

Second, do you see the winking smiley face? Do you know what that means? It means with that statement I WAS JOKING.

I understand that sometimes sarcasm is lost on the internet. That is why I chose to add a smiley to help clarify that I was only kidding. Please, use common sense before attacking me. You only make things harder on yourself.

Yeah i have to agree' date=' the whole 'start date' thing doesnt really mean much. It doesnt make you any more of a fan or any higher than anyone else. I dont really think that should be used against people.[/quote']

*looks at start date*

About the start date: I'm basically pointing out that I've been around. I'm not some ignorant noobie who doesn't understand how things work. It's not that I'm right because I've been around longer, it's to point out that i'm not some fresh idiot.

On another subject: "Why are you here?"

Because I'm a fan, obviously. Why do you think I'm here?

How is it that I have expressed a thought out and genuine opinion about a band I have loved for a long time that I feel have lost their way, and all I get in return are insults and general stupidity? I thought I did a good job of presenting my thoughts on Coldplay and their current situation and I'm being told to go away. Have I missed something?

bragging about a start date is like the guy at the bar who says "but i drive a porshe" to impress. just because there are some of us that have family obligations, children to care for, and careers to further, and thus have not had time to join a message board, doesn't give one any less credibility. i just think the whole "teenybopper" and "noob" thing is petty and childish because those terms are bandied about in quite a derrogatory manner. i just don't think it is neccessary. i read no disclaimer when joining this site that stated: "no teenagers allowed" or "new members must be seen and not heard."

everyone here has the right to express his or her opinion regardless of the length of time they have been a member.

I feel for you man... This board is starting to look like it's being taken over by teeny-bopper type noobs. Check out Chris Martin --> dunno whether to  /  / :( These people really need to react less personally to things being said about the band and separate their personalities from the band/music.

Well, I'm still :/ While I'm happy there're more fans than I ever thought possible for them, I've really got mixed feelings about Coldplay becoming a pop entity... Well, I guess I'll try to look at the bright side and be happy for them that they've got more people appreciating their music

It's definitely a mixed bag of goodies.

I'm glad there are some rational people still around, too. Thanks for your input!

(I'm thinking I'll just let this thread/band take it's course now.)

I'm going to say this again...i understand what you are saying, The Reckoner 00. I miss the 'Parachutes' days.

The reason why i don't like these kinds of threads is because i feel some people have still not moved on from the fact that 'X&Y' was not what fans had hoped. There were so many of these threads in June when the album came out...i've expressed my disappointments as well. Four months later, when i still see threads like this, it's exhausting.

I'm not saying let's have threads like, "Coldplay rocks; if you think otherwise, you suck!" or "Coldplay is the Best. End of Argument" What i'm saying is let's move on. I mean, should be still discuss why we loved/hated 'Parachutes' and 'AROBTTH'?

i hope you understand what i'm trying to say.

Just a point Steph... What about some people who've only heard the album recently, i.e. didn't go out and get the album for some reason or other until recently? Last I checked, X&Y was still selling by the shiploads... And believe it or not, there're people still discovering Coldplaying.com (not referring to The Reckoner of course)... Also, older fans (i.e. in age and also those who've been fans longer) are less likely to respond as fast / form opinions as quickly... we've been wrong more times before :D

So to sum it all up, I think there are still people new to this X&Y experience who are expressing feelings that are new to them. On the other hand, there are also those of us who although we've known the album for 4 months already, are only beginning to realise / form certain opinions / theories about the motivation behind the album...

I may not be able to speak for The Reckoner 00, but for myself, it's not that I still miss the 'Parachute' days (I've accepted that they're not gonna do that again- at least not in the near future anyway)... It's more of seeing what Coldplay are becoming (it looks increasingly like a commercialised behemoth to me), and hoping against hope that there may be other explanations for my observations. This thread has not been about 'X&Y' per se (I think most of us have accepted the album, warts and all), rather it's about what X&Y signifies in the context of the bands development... Some of us are concerned about what we perceive as the over-commercialisation of the band. Coldplay may not have sold their souls to the devil just yet and probably don't intend to (I for one hope-to-God they never will), but they are showing some clear signs of becoming the next Backstreet Boys (whatever that implies).

So I guess if you want to have less threads like this, maybe you could help us with our conundrum by offering another point of view about where Coldplay are heading and why (some clear evidence would help too) :P

k didn't really think I'd get such a strong reaction. I guess the way that I 'challenge' people online is that I say whatever's going through my head.. Nooo I didn't notice the little wink face at first, but noticed it afterwards. I also don't really care about the start date thing. Just because I haven't been a member on the message board as long doesn't mean I'm not as big a fan or anything like that. And it still says "New Member" on my info because I don't post here as often as I'd like to, because my internet is broken at home.

so! I'd like it if this whole thing just got blown over and I promise I'll stop entering big threads like this so late in the game.

apologies.

I must say I am a bit dissappointed in you lot...

no one can say one negative thing about Coldplay because you guys get all 'immature' (yes I said it) by namecalling and such... this board is to discuss... I don't think Reckoner's views were harsh on the band.. its just his opinion in how he feels the band has changed. Many of you just discovered the band and have nothing much to base your opinions on but this album.. a few bsides.. or perhaps you discovered them whilst walking thru the mall one day and heard Clocks over the PA system... I happen to know for a fact that Reckoner, Egghead, and myself (just to name a few) have been fans since waaaay back in the day... and as with any band who gains such popularity, loss of intamacy is bound to happen. That raw emotion that was once belted out durin Trouble and We Never Change is found no longer. You should all try to be a bit more open minded. If you are an avid music lover (in general) you should be able to see that the musical integrity of the band might be in jeopardy.. how have their sales been doing??? Do you hear them on the radio 20x a day? Are they plastered all over the magazines?? Reviews speak for themselves...

dont get me wrong.. I still love the band and their music... however I was let down by the album. Hearing them live makes up for it though. And since then.. I can sppreciate the album a bit more.. but I'd listen to Parachutes and AROBTH 10000x over X&Y....

think about it...

if you all continue to slag each other off in rude and disrespectful ways.. I'll lock this thread.. now play nice! Have an opinion.. just keep in mind to be respectful. :)
