Mourinho says he wants to coach in MLS

Will coaching methods of "The Special One" translate to league?

NEW YORK – Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, also known as "The Special One," has said he dreams of one day managing an MLS club.

In an interview with former Italian national team player Christian Panucci for Sky Italia, Mourinho is quoted as saying: "My idea is to stay at the top of European soccer for the next 10 to 15 years. After that I would like to have a completely different experience in the United States – the New York Red Bulls or Los Angeles Galaxy, a home in Manhattan or a home in Malibu. That’s the idea I have.”

The 48-year-old Mourinho is currently in his first season at Real Madrid, who sit in second place in La Liga, seven points behind leaders FC Barcelona. They have also advanced to the final of the Copa del Rey (vs. Barcelona) and the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League (vs. French club Lyon).

Before taking the reins at the Santiago Bernabéu, Mourinho managed Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, capturing countless titles. Many would be interested to see whether Mourinho’s managerial abilities could translate into the league structure of MLS.

The Portuguese manager has been linked with a return to England following his stint with Real Madrid and has been talked about as a potential successor of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

In the same Sky interview, he also says that he would enjoy the possibility of returning to Italy’s Serie A.

Richard Keys and Andy Gray join TalkSport

Station says it has scored 'sensational coup' by signing former Sky Sports presenters who were caught up in sexism storm

Disgraced former Sky Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray have been signed up by TalkSport to present a flagship daytime show on the talk radio station, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

TalkSport moved in for the pair just two weeks after they were engulfed in a sexism storm which began after they made disparaging comments about a female football official off air that were leaked to the Mail on Sunday.

Gray was sacked by Sky Sports after new evidence of "unacceptable and offensive behaviour" came to light. Keys later resigned after giving an ill-advised radio interview about the incident, coincidentally on TalkSport.

The pair will present a three-hour weekday show between 10am and 1pm, beginning next Monday. It is understood they have been hired on six-figure salaries.

TalkSport said there were no plans for Keys and Gray to interview Sian Massey, the assistant referee who was the subject of their initial comments.

Keys said it was the "start of something new and very exciting for Andy and myself". He added: "We are delighted to be joining the TalkSport family and can't wait to get started."

The TalkSport programme director, Moz Dee, described the signing as a "sensational coup" for the station.

"The events of the last couple of weeks have been a lesson and have changed them," said Dee.

"One thing that hasn't changed however is that they are two iconic broadcasters who have a wealth of experience in the world of sport and that's what we have to do now – move forward with them as sports broadcasters.

"I think it's a sensational coup for TalkSport and great for radio. These men have carved out amazing careers in television and were at the forefront of the Sky revolution. I think they are going to have a massive impact on the radio scene."

Dee has known Gray and Keys for some time, working with the former on the original incarnation of TalkSport, Talk Radio's coverage of the 1998 football World Cup. He later worked with Gray at BBC Radio 5 Live and its coverage of the 2002 World Cup.

Gray said: "I can't tell you how excited I am to be joining TalkSport. It's a wonderful opportunity for Richard and I to do what we do best and that's talk about sport."

Keys and Gray were the long-serving faces of Sky Sports' Premier League coverage until the sexism row that engulfed the broadcaster after they were recorded suggesting that female officials "don't know the offside rule".

Further clips emerged showing Gray exchanging sexist comments with a Sky Sports touchline reporter before the match and to a female Sky Sports presenter.

Another clip emerged of Keys discussing a former girlfriend of Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp.

TalkSport broadcasts 64 live Premier League games a year and celebrated record audience figures of more than 3 million in the final three months of last year.

Big BBC interview by Dan Walker with Rafa Benitez in the BBC blog below. Check it out. He talks about his time at Liverpool and his failed 6 months at Inter Milan. Interesting stuff.

He's one of football's most intriguing characters. Rafa is a man of obvious exceptional intelligence but while he's had a tough last couple/few years I believe he is one of the most misunderstood men in football. It's clear that when he feels he doesn't have the club pulling in his direction he gets very irritated and annoyed and undoubtedly distracts him from his job. Also he is a very stubborn man which is good in many places in his job but stubborness was excessive on his part at times as shown by his disposal of one time long term friend and assistant Pako Ayesteran at Liverpool. In his place came Mauricio Pellegrino who quite frankly was just a yes man to Rafa. On his day though, and I still believe this, Rafa is still without a doubt a tactical genius and a great coach. In his next job he just needs to ignore any wranglings above him at board room level and constructively cooperate with his fellow coaches on the field. A brilliant manager still.

He may be a brilliant manager but can anyone see him accepting a job at a club which isn't at least top 3 in their league? I'd be surprised if he gets another offer like that. Then again him going to Inter was probably more unlikely.

He'd be immense for a club that has potential like your team Newcastle but the owners would scare him off.

On top of Nicolas Anelka and Torsten Frings, apparently Miroslav Klose has been linked with a potential move to NY Red Bulls once his contract expires. It might all be complete B.S., but I find it hilariously awesome how the MLS seems have turned into a retirement home for big european players. What's also funny is they all only seem to be interested in New York. If any of the rumours are true, LA and NY may turn into the American Barca and Real, with Donovan, Beckham and Juan Pablo Angel playing against Henry, Klose and Marquez.

Maybe they'll try to lure Maradona and Pele out of retirement too.........................

West Ham win ownership of Olympic Stadium

West Ham have seen off the competition of Tottenham Hotspur to virtually win the battle for ownership of the Olympic Stadium, the BBC reported on Wednesday night.

According to the corporation, the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) will nominate the Hammers as the preferred bidders and ask that the OPLC board backs the decision, which must be ratified by the London mayor and the government.

A bitter war of words has been waged by the two Premier League clubs in recent weeks in their tussle to win the right to claim ownership of the stadium following the Olympics in 2012.

Both Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and West Ham co-owner David Sullivan put forth their visions for the site in columns in the London Evening Standard this week, while Sullivan further told ESPNsoccernet that awarding the stadium to his club "works for West Ham United and all of London".

The Hammers plan to retain a running track at the stadium - something that appeals to the OPLC, which is keen to stick to its pledge of providing an athletics legacy.

Meanwhile, Tottenham plan to substantially rebuild the stadium into a football facility, while revamping the Crystal Palace athletics facilities.

If the BBC's report is correct, then Tottenham will be forced to return to plans to redevelop White Hart lane.
