Chelsea's annual wage bill has soared to £172.5 million - almost £40 million more than the next highest payers Manchester City. The figure for the year ending June 2010 is revealed in Chelsea's full annual accounts lodged with Companies House on Friday and shows a significant increase on the previous year. In 2009, the club spent £165.6 million on wages but that sum included pay-offs worth £12.6 million to sacked manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and his assistants. Excluding the pay-offs, the rise in wages is £19.5 million and represents a 12.7% increase. Manchester City's wage bill is £133.3 million, Manchester United's £131.7 million and Arsenal are fourth with £110 million spent annually on salaries, according to their most recent accounts. Chelsea's wages are 82% of their turnover - more healthy than City's 106% - but way off United's level of 46% and Arsenal's of 49%. The figures also confirm that Chelsea reported losses of £70.9 million compared to £44.4 million the previous year. The club indicated earlier this week that they believe they will halve their losses in the next financial year. The latest accounts also reveal that Chelsea will be liable for £3.8 million extra in National Insurance contributions if HM Revenue and Customs succeeds in its legal case that image rights payments should be taxed as income. If that is proved, the players themselves would be liable to pay any tax individually in relation to image rights.

Pierre Littbarski, McClaren's former No 2, will replace the former Middlesbrough manager in charge of the 12th-placed Bundesliga club following a string of poor results with the 1-0 weekend defeat to Hannover the final straw. Writing's on the wall: Steve McClaren has been sacked as manager of German outfit Wolfsburg It was the club's second on the spin and continued a miserable sequence of just one win in 11 in the German top flight. In 21 games at the helm, McClaren managed just five wins. 'VfL have parted ways with Steve McClaren. Pierre Littbarski is taking over,' the club said in a statement on Monday. The one-time assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United leaves with the club, champions just two seasons ago, sitting 12th in the 18-team Bundesliga, just one point above the relegation zone. Wolfsburg chief executive Dieter Hoeness said: 'We were not convinced that we could have a stable collaboration with Steve McClaren until the end of the season. In joining the Wolves the 49-year-old became the first Englishman to manage in the German top flight, but quickly found that he was unable to replicate the success he had enjoyed in Holland, with Wolfsburg losing his first three league games in charge. Although the team recovered slightly, wins remained hard to come by and a recent sequence of seven straight league draws underlined their lack of cutting edge. In the firing line: McClaren lasted just eight months at the Wolfsburg helm Wolfsburg chairman Dr Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz revealed the club gave McClaren every opportunity to turn their season around, but in the end were forced to act with the Yorkshireman just nine months into a two-year contract. 'We have not seen any alternative,' he said. 'Of course we all want to see continuity, particularly in the coaching position. Therefore, we have been waiting a long time with the decision. 'The supervisory board and management now believes, however, that the team cannot continue under Steve McClaren.' McClaren began his managerial career at Middlesbrough in 2001 having earlier had spells as assistant to Jim Smith at Derby and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. The Gunners went 4-0 up at St James’ Park but only managed a draw after a stirring second-half comeback from the Magpies. And France 2 over the weekend reported the Barclays Premier League clash was being looked at by Interpol over allegations of ‘strange movements of money.’ But Interpol this morning denied the broadcaster’s claims insisting there was no such investigation, while the Premier League have not been made aware of any betting irregularities in connection with the match. And now the furious north London club is seeking advice over the allegations with a view to starting legal proceedings against the channel.
