German fans boycott game in price protest

15th September 2010

More than 1,500 Borussia Dortmund fans are expected to boycott their club’s away derby with Schalke in protest at their local rivals almost doubling ticket prices - but what might come as a surprise to many British football fans are the actual figures involved.

For one of the biggest matches in Germany, their equivalent of the Merseyside derby or the Old Firm, tickets in the standing area at Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, will come in at €22, or around £19. The reason Dortmund fans are up in arms, is the fact that Schalke are hiking ticket prices by 50 per cent as a “top-game surcharge” - tickets for the same fixture last year were only €14.30.

Dortmund fan groups have had said 'enough is enough', and a broad alliance of around 300 supporters groups called for a boycott. Under the banner of 'Kein Zwanni fur nen stehe', or '20 Euros for standing? No way' fans have rallied to the cause.

To date, around 1,500 tickets have been returned, which means that there will be visible gaps on the away terrace for one of the most anticipated games of the season.

German fans’ willingness to mobilise and challenge authority is well known, and somewhat anathema to the prevailing 'expect and accept' culture that's more prevalent in the UK. A lot of fans in the UK would see £19 to see a top flight match, and a big local derby at that, as extremely good value for money.

It is the principle of the price hike, though, and the subtle creep of price rises for tickets throughout Germany that has angered the Dortmund fans sufficiently to act. Fears are growing that moves such as this are the thin end of the wedge.

aww thats horrible!!

but i'm so excited for this game it's going to be really good but i'm doubting schalke at the moment...

Talk of him being the next England manager is offensive enough. If he WAS somehow made England manager then you could expect mass suicide from England fans. England fans have never been one to want their team to lose but I think they'd be quite happy to see the team lose if that **** was in charge!

And losing would be a foregone conclusion....................... :dozey:

It would be like the Turnip revisited.:stunned:

Haha, I would like to tell Allardyce to not bother going to the game today and wait by the phone in case Real phone. Might see some nice football like we did when he was recovering from a heart scare and his assistant McDonald took over.

He's an embarrassment to the club.

When the rest of the fans are shouting 'attack, attack, attack attack attack' in order to galvanise the team, I do the same except also point at Fat Sam, praying for him to clutch his chest.

We aren't even a tough tackling team anymore. Throughout the last few weeks he's been trying to spread the myth in the local papers that we are labeled as bully boys because of our aggressive approach to the game. No we aren't, we were labeled as bully boys (unfairly) under Hughes, under Allardarse we are simply known for shit football. I hope he gets the England job because I hate them too. That woul be perfect.

Hoping for three points today. Vital to pick up points from teams around us and this is the first game of the season against a team who didn't finish below us last season. 4 points isn't a bad start when you look at it like that. Tenner a ticket so should be a very decent turnout.

That's going too far.:dozey:

West Ham getting their first points of the season

Come on Arsenal, show Man City how it's done at Sunderland ;)

1 win, 2 draws and 1 defeat for Man City so far isn't it?

That's going too far.:dozey:

Only the truth.

Today summed him up. Ugly.

Referee was diabolical too. Our goal shouldn't have stood, we should have had two penalties and Schwarzer should have been off for handling outside the area.

Waste of a tenner for anybody who came down for the cheap tickets.

Blackburn under Mark Hughes were really impressive. Recall the time they beat Man Utd 4-3. That was one incredible game and one incredible performance by Blackburn. Also he wouldn't resort to desperate tactics like putting Samba up front.

Also for Allardyce to say that he is more suited to Inter Milan or Real Madrid isn't he merely excusing his own poor start to the season. And perhaps he should concentrate on his own management rather than the likes of Wenger who he could only dream of emulating. Fuck I hate that man with a vengeance. He's simply a poor excuse for oxygen. One of the worst individuals in the Premier League.

Oh and a disappointing result for Arsenal. Sunderland deserved the draw fair play to them but it wasn't a very good performance by the referee Phil Dowd. Serious issue though - he does look a bit porky to be refereeing at the top level does Dowd.

I wish so much that Hughes was back.

In Allardyce's defence he hasn't had a bad start to the season. Today was the first game this season against opposition who didn't finish above us last season. And we didn't lose it.

That doesn't excuse his awfulness though.

luckiest and unluckiest moment ever simultaneously. the ball ended up going in from the block but fab got an injury in the process

also some of the most suspect defending i have ever seen. what is he doing taking a step back when the opposition player is less than 10 yards away from him.

LOL @ 1:45

re late sunderland goal it seems like a typical case of referees overreacting to something that happened last week. there was uproar over the whistle being blown when everton had a goal scoring opportunity so the referees have done a complete flip and now are scared to blow full time at all.

Allardice is apparently the best manager in the world, and can manage any team. I'm chuffed to bits you've got him! :D

He's a legend in his own lunchtime...........................

To be honest I'd have him ahead of Laws.

That's about it though.

hate it when man utd go up by 2 goals. why cant we just sit on 1.

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:

Shame on you, United!

good on berba!!

would like to see a better angle on that oshea-torres foul which lead to the second goal. the commentators seemed very adamant that it was a clear foul which prevented a goal scoring opportunity.

either way despite maybe 20mins of the game man utd were easily the superior team, at least in attack.

3-2 can't complain. Liverpool didn't deserve to win that. Gerrard as ever has to be the one to pull a rabbit out of the hat but even that wasn't enough. Disgusted with the way the team just sat back after the equalizer. Haven't seen anything so far this season that suggests the guys will get back into the top 4. This added to the rumours that Tom Hicks is looking to refinance his debt in the club makes for an absolutely rotten weekend. I think I'd rather take administration and a 9 point deduction than that **** keeping control of the club. Hope he gets run down by a bus the fat yank fuck!

Damn you Chelsea, I was betting on you putting 6 past Blackpool, whom put more past Wigan (4) than Man City did (2).

So you prefer your club getting taken over by the UK taxpayer, via RBS, whom would probably look for a fast sale to get back some money.

So you prefer your club getting taken over by the UK taxpayer, via RBS, whom would probably look for a fast sale to get back some money.

Absolutely. If RBS do take control of the club it then they can sell the club at a knockoff price making it a much more attractive purchase. Of course if we have to blame other people for the downfall then you've got to shove some blame on Benitez last season for some erratic tactics but more crucially on David Moores the ex owner for selling out just so he could profit £15 million personally from Hicks and Gillett rather than settle for DICs deal.

But generally English football clubs are run disgracefully. The only top team who operates impressively business wise is Arsenal. No one can disagree with that. If there's one team who can rely on a good future on the field and off it it's Arsenal. Time will show this.

Arsenal might have debt, but they have a 'new' stadium to show for it

I just don't understand why clubs around the world have owners.

A football club shouldn't be treated like a company. It isn't about profit, it's about titles. That's why, here in Brazil, clubs are non-profit organizations, with a president elected by its paying supporters.
