Joy unconfined: FC United's Jake Cotterill celebrates scoring his side's second goal during the FA Cup match against Rochdale at Spotland

FC United of Manchester can continue to dream of an FA Cup third round tie with Manchester United after Mike Norton’s injury-time winner secured a dramatic first-round victory against Rochdale at Spotland.

Although 95 places separate FC and their League One opponents, goals by Nicky Platt and Jake Cottrell had given the minnows a 2-0 lead and a foot in the second round. Headed goals from Anthony Elding and Craig Dawson looked to have spared Keith Hill’s team a humiliating exit, but Norton earned a deserved victory for FC by scoring with virtually the final kick of the game.

Despite their undeniable links to Manchester United — the club were formed by disfranchised United supporters following the Glazer takeover at Old Trafford in May 2005 — FC United have a complex relationship with the 'real’ United.

Spotland reverberated to Eric Cantona chants, but also to the anti-Glazer songs common at Old Trafford. Green-and-gold scarves were sprinkled among the red, white and black and there were chants of “Are you watching, David Gill?” but the United chief executive was otherwise engaged at a club function.

Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken dismissively of FC United being “publicity seekers”, but even for all the enmity between the two Uniteds, there could be no denying that FC appear to have inherited some of United’s FA Cup DNA.

With four divisions separating the 'rebels’ and Rochdale, the EvoStik League Premier Division minnows should really have had no chance. But the Bury-based non-League outfit displayed some of the spirit that has taken 11 FA Cups to Old Trafford and, after surviving a first-minute handball shout for a Rochdale penalty, Karl Marginson’s team matched the League One side.

Norton was unlucky to guide a back-flick wide of the far post from Carlos Roca’s 18th-minute pass before Roca, the scorer in the 1-0 fourth qualifying victory against Barrow, forced goalkeeper Josh Lillis to save his 20-yard strike two minutes later.

Chris O’Grady then sent a glancing header wide for the home side, but the goal which FC deserved came three minutes before half-time when Platt, running on to Jerome Wright’s pass, directed a classy chip over Lillis from 12 yards.

A pitch invasion followed. It was reminiscent of the scenes which greeted Ryan Giggs’s semi-final winner against Arsenal at Villa Park in 1999, but Platt’s goal probably meant just as much to FC United.

Rochdale, eliminated from the cup by non-League Luton Town and Forest Green Rovers in the last two seasons, would have been expected to learn from the bitter lessons of those defeats.

But they failed to match FC’s desire and the visitors doubled their lead five minutes into the second-half when Cottrell scored his stunning goal. It was a fierce strike, but the patient build-up was also worthy of note.

The upset was now firmly on, but FC were faced with 40 minutes of desperate defending to complete their giant-killing. And after Elding had headed Dale level from Brian Barry-Murphy’s 52nd minute free-kick, FC began to wobble and sink deeper into their own half.

Chris O’Grady narrowly failed to connect with a teasing cross into the FC six-yard box before the forward saw a goalbound shot cleared off the line by Richard Battersby. And despite FC’s resistance, the inevitable happened on 78 minutes when Dawson headed in Barry-Murphy’s corner.

There was one more twist, though, and Norton applied it by scoring the winner four minutes into stoppage time after dispossessing Lillis. Now the fairytale is just 90 minutes away.

That kind of result is always likely to happen in a league where two teams are worlds apart from the others.;)

I thought the Kilmarnock result was more interesting. I don't think they've ever won 3-0 away.

FA Cup results so far, will be one or two non-leaguers hoping for a good cup run this year. Impressive results from the likes of Dover and Tamworth...

Newcastle are 4th! Holy fuck.

I talked to someone earlier in the week about how Newcastle would do against Arsenal, and they thought I was being a bit silly digging out positives from the 4-0 defeat in the Carling cup, but I said there's no reason why Newcastle can't get at least a draw from the game because in that defeat the first 2 goals were fucked, and Newcastle still didn't give up, looked tight, and were caught by the counter attack a few more times. But looking at 2 different points of the game, before Arsenal scored, and after their 2nd, Newcastle looked just as much of a team.

And that's the game we played today, tight, professional, a mixture of decent football and the type of football you expect from a promoted team, incredible result. Arsenal though, had spells where they could have used their superior class and technical ability, and could have opened us up. They did on some occasions, and came very close to scoring 3 times, but overall they were poor and didn't look like the team who beat us 4-0.

Anyway, we're above Shitty now, another victory for football.

Well done Newcastle... lets hope we stay the remianing 30 minutes in the lead... down to 10 men. Super Mario sent off !

FUCK! Why did your team have to win. I really thought West Brom were going to pull out another surprise.

Oh and appreciate the 'well done' but I'm not going to pretend I'm happy City won.

Newcastle's Andy Carroll emerges as Chelsea transfer target

Andy Carroll is the man Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti wants as the long-term replacement for Didier Drogba, according to reports.

The Newcastle United striker has enjoyed a fine start to the season, scoring five times and being credited with four assists as the Magpies have eased back into life in the Premier League.

Carroll's performances have made a big impression on a number of leading managers and Ancelotti is apparently now considering making a £15 million bid for the 21-year-old.

The Premier League champions are short of forward options, with only Nicolas Anelka, Daniel Sturridge and Salomon Kalou available as support for Drogba, and were recently linked with a move for Ajax's Mounir El Hamdaoui.

Carroll represents a better long-term option than the Moroccan, as he has already proved he can cope with Premier League football and has the physical attributes to take Drogba's place in the team when the 32-year-old eventually leaves Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle stuns Arsenal, Man City beat West Brom

LONDON — Arsenal suffered its second home defeat by a promoted side this season when a header by striker Andy Carroll earned Newcastle United a 1-0 Premier League victory on Sunday.

Mario Balotelli scored both goals and was sent off as Manchester City ended a run of three defeats in all competitions with a comfortable 2-0 success at West Bromwich Albion.

The results left both contending teams on 20 points, three behind Manchester United, which beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 on Saturday and five behind leaders Chelsea, which was playing at Liverpool later on Sunday. Newcastle climbed to fifth, on 17 points.

Arsenal, beaten by Shakhtar Donetsk in their midweek Champions League game, quickly imposed their usual dominance at The Emirates with neat passing in midfield.

Cesc Fabregas hit the bar with a deflected free kick after 13 minutes while Newcastle keeper Tim Krul made a great one-handed save to keep out a Samir Nasri shot after 39.

Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski had been a virtual spectator but when he was called into action in the last minute of the first half he needlessly tried to punch a free kick but was outjumped by Carroll whose header looped into the empty net.

Arsenal resumed its territorial control in the second half with Theo Walcott rattling the bar again soon after the restart.

However, Newcastle worked tirelessly to keep the Gunners at long range and the home threat gradually petered out.

Arsenal’s bad day was completed when defender Laurent Koscielny was shown a straight red card for a last-man foul on substitute Nile Ranger in stoppage time.

“These are big weeks for us and what we have is a group of players who are all in this together fighting together, supporting each other and I think that showed in the performance,” Newcastle manager Chris Hughton told Sky Sports.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: “It was a big disappointment because our performance was not good enough. But I think we were unlucky because they had one shot on target the whole game and we lose 1-0.

“But we knew on set pieces we couldn’t afford these kind of mistakes.”
