Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

With that, I think I can pull myself away from here long enough to drink some brandy, stumble into bed and hopefully recover from my flu...

Look no matter how the court finds Chris really doesn't have to be concerned about it, as he knows he didn't plagiarize. The man is always the first to admit an influence, borrowed riff etc, why would he have tried to lie this time...?..The answer is he wouldn't have, plain and simple. Its a coincidence and nothing more, I don't think theres enough there for Joe to win anyway. But like I said either way I'm sure Chris's conscience is clear. Lets just hope the courts are fair this time.

Yeah, the case was settled a good ten threads ago, but there aren't any other dead horses to beat at the moment...

Ya that guy just wants money!......But i really hate that he wants money and wants them never to play or release it again!

This is all a load of crap. I've heard the song, it's not really that similar, and a lot of songs have similar melodies!!!!

People who are saying "The key is different!" are idiots who don't know anything about music. Just because two people sing Happy Birthday in different pitches, it doesn't mean they're different songs. The melody is similar as well, and the chord progression is exactly the same, that being ii-IV-I-iv. Even though it's a common progression (Cliffs of Dover, for one). But again, it doesn't matter what key it is. People who are saying "omg its fake vid he changed the key and edited it fuck hiM!!" shouldn't be allowed to breathe. They probably just saw someone say it in a Youtube comment and don't know what it means.

I believe Satriani's legal counsel chose to wait this long because Satriani was busy touring, recording a DVD, recording an album with another group, and plenty of other things over the past half a year. He just finished. So there you go.

Satriani feels very passionately about music so he probably got overemotional about the whole thing. He's not doing this because "omgz hes teh notalent bastrd whu cars abut the munee FUK HIIIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". He's a fan of coldplay, has them playing on their tour bus, and has said one of their records is "a perfect pop record" before. So it was not done out of malice.

As for my opinion (because I'm sure EVERYONE cares); Joe should drop the lawsuit because I doubt he will win because I still think it's just a silly coincidence, and this whole thing is terrible PR anyways, and I hope this thing just blows over and everyone forgets about it in a month or two. I still hate that this is HEADLINE NEWS in some areas, I mean goddamn, slow news day? And good luck with the grammies, VLV definitely deserves something big.

And some more song-stealing laughs to go around, so we can put this all behind us:

i think it's absolutely ridiculous this idiot is coming out now and accusing Coldplay of this. This guy has been irrelevant for years and I doubt Coldplay has ever listened to him. My problem with this Joe character is that he himself isn't original; he's been trying to be Eddie Van Halen for years, and all his licks and riffs are borrowed from EVH. Also, the guy has recorded like a million songs (exaggerating I know) so there's bound to be some melodies being borrowed and passed around.

They've mentioned him before in an interview six years ago.

He plays absolutely nothing like EVH. What, is he the only so called "shredder" you even know the name of? He self-admittedly takes from Allan Holdsworth and Jimi Hendrix, such as in Saying Goodbye, Flying in a Blue Dream, and House Full of Bullets.

I am a huge fan of Coldplay .

The thing that concerns me is that I was lookng at some interviews with Satriani and he just seems so knowledgeable about music theory and the guitar.

According to what I read he's played with most of the great guitar players. So he must really feel that he's got a case.

One thing...I don't buy that he was "too busy" to file the suit earlier. His attorneys could have filed the suit earlier because they are normally the ones to do the filing. Even if he had to be there, it would only take a hour to do so and he could not find the time to spare that hour or so. Sorry, but I am not buying it. It all smacks of money and him wanting all, not some, but all of it.

The reason why I see it this way is because when the song first came out who knew it would be so successful and make a lot of money for the band. Now that time has passed and one can get see how much money the song has made and the recognition it has garnered then all of that can help them assess how much money he "should" get.

Another thing, all musicians have a legal team. So when incidents come up they file suit right away. I don't know any respectable musician who waits for half a year to file a claim. Musicians are protective of their music so when things like this happens they file suit right away, but he didn't.

As for him being a "fan" of Coldplay...really? And, that is supposed to make things all better and cheery? I don't think so. Plus, how do you know he plays their music on his bus? Have you been on it?

Listen, I am not taking this issue on the side of Coldplay but as a lover of music. I just can't stand how this has played out, which in so many ways do not make any sense. I think I would care more if he wanted credit but he does not want that, he wants money and only money. IMO, that raises a red flag.

Now, Eddie is a guitarist. IMO, he is one of the greatest guitarists out there. Seriously, who would not want to be like Eddie? I would love to see Jonny do an imitation of Eddie.

The guy is only after money. If he really cared about his song, he would have filed the suit earlier.

good point, VLV came out like 6 months ago

*** Sigh *** Alright, I do not know Joe Satriani's music, however, I follow music closely enough to know that he is very well respected as an extremely influential and talented guitarist. The issue is not whether or not you like his music or think he is skilled. The former is a matter of opinion while the later does not seem to be in dispute by those qualified to evaluate (which does not include me). The point is that, and I think I have seen it mentioned before, this is a PR nightmare for Coldplay. They are being drug through the mud whether they are guilty of plagiarism or not. Plus, I do not see what Satriani has to gain: he does not need the money (I am sure he lives comfortably), he is already critically acclaimed, and he is taking a beating from fans of a very popular band, Coldplay, for having brought suit. It just seems like a situation where nobody wins regardless of the outcome. What is the point? I get the protection of intellectual property part of the argument, but even if Coldplay did steal this section (I admit that I do not know; I can't read Chris Martin's mind like it seems that a lot of you can), the worst they are guilty of is snatching a 5 second snippet. Again, this is the worst case scenario. Is all of this worth it?

I do agree that this is a PR nightmare for Coldplay. I also agree that Mr. Satriani is taking a beating from some Coldplay fans and that he does not need the money, but money is all this guy is asking for and I believe that is the reason why so many fans are really after him. He's not asking for some royalities and credit, he's only asking for all royalities. IMO, that is very suspicious and that is why I have problems with this whole situation. Why not also ask for credit since "supposely" Coldplay plagiarize a rift from him? If he created the riff then he should also be asking for credit but he's not. It makes one wonder whether or not he stole that riff off of someone else who does not know it or even cares.

No matter what happens it will not take away my love for this band.

"I do agree that this is a PR nightmare for Coldplay. "

IMHO it is, and it isn't.

Public opinion of Coldplay has always been extrmely polarized at both the positive and negative ends. At this point most people's opinion of them will likely not change much over this situation. Based on comments I've read around a variety of places, it seems like the majority of the people decrying Coldplay for this, hated them long before now and were just waiting for an opening. Likewise, it seems many of their fans have really rallied to their defense, which actually could end up reflecting some degree of negative sentiment back on Satriani...

"The thing that concerns me is that I was lookng at some interviews with Satriani and he just seems so knowledgeable about music theory and the guitar.

I'm sure he does, as it really doesn't make sense to go to the expense and trouble of filing a lawsuit if you don't think there's a solid chance you can win. Likewise, Coldplay must feel they did nothing wrong and that they can prove this in court or they would have likely resolved the case with a settlement rather than facing a lengthy (and public) legal battle.

Also, while I understand it does take some time to pu together all the info/documents etc. needed to file a lawsuit, the timing still seems a little fishy to me. Coupled with the fact that Satriani appears to be seeking punative damages over royalties and/or composition credit, maks the whole "he's not doing it for the money" lie suspect.

I also agree that Mr. Satriani is taking a beating from some Coldplay fans and that he does not need the money, but money is all this guy is asking for and I believe that is the reason why so many fans are really after him

I agree, but we don't know what has gone on behind the scenes. Perhaps Satriani asked for recognition or partial royalties and Coldplay told him F/U (maybe due to the fact that they don't think that they were influenced at all by his music). This is why I wish Coldplay would make a strong public declaration on the issue. When matters like this come before the court, it is not uncommon to ask for financial compensation, and a lot of it, for damages incurred.

Public opinion of Coldplay has always been extrmely polarized at both the positive and negative ends.

Another true point. But while those who dislike Coldplay are going to use this as ammunition, I don't see any positives to it for those of us who like Coldplay (besides possible re-affirmation of loyalty to the band, I guess). Therefore, I still think it is publicity that is nothing but bad for Coldplay.

Maybe Joe tried to reach a settlement first, and the law suit is a last resort

None of us know his motivation for filing it now so we should not speculate why

Exactly...on both sides.

Ya they pronbably said F/U cause they didnt steal it from him IMO.........Chris has always said when songs have been influenced by other artist so why wouldnt they say he influenced VLV?......Probably cause he didnt!.......Also if they would have heard it they would have called him and said ''Hey,i wanna use that part for a song''.....and they would have gave him some credit....just like they did with the song Talk......I dont know about reading music or notes or anything like that but form what ive heard form people that do know, they say its only a couple of notes and they probably didnt do it on purpose....

Of course it's common to ask for financial compensation. However, it's common among musicians to also demand recognition and be given credit in a song's listing. I don't know why that part is so overlooked but it is. He is only asking for money and no recognition. I guess his attitude is "Screw the credit, I just want the money." For someone who supposed to take pride in their work he obviously is showing that by not also asking for credit. Also, musicians normally ask for 20% to 50% of the royalities but not this guy...he's asking for the whole shabang, 100% of the song's royalities.

IMO, I think Coldplay is doing the right thing by not saying anything and letting their legal team do the work. This is a sensitive issue and it's best for them to handle it and not let Chris or the others say something that could hurt them.

I do believe that something must have happened behind closed doors and it must have been bad enough for this guy to file suit and ask only for money and nothing else. It makes me think that he was asking only for money at the get-go among other things and that is why Coldplay told him to screw off. IMO, If he wanted credit then he should also be wanting credit now.

I cant believe the biased bashing of both Satriani and Coldplay, you all come off like trolls, coldplay fans bashing Satriani included. Satriani believes his song was ripped off whether he is right or wrong it is what he believes and every one of us would be upset at that.

And for those so biased they are even denying the songs are similiar, you are coming off as coldplay groupies and not music fans. It's obvious the songs are very similiar, the rhythm, the melody and even the lead. That however does not mean plagiarism, it is a hell of a coincidence but it is possible. Coldplay may have also been influenced by the song and didnt even notice the close similiarity, another possibiity, or maybe they did rip off the song, another possibility. I just find it hard to believe if they did use the song that they wouldnt give credit. Coldplay may settle out of court, who knows. It's a great song though whether it was plagiarized or not.
