As much as I want to instantly side with Coldplay, I *do* hear the similarity. If it's enough to warrant a suit... I don't know.

George described the legal proceedings as terrible... as 'expert' after 'expert' stood up to tear apart every second of his song, he began to doubt himself and his own heart/talent. I think the only reason why people hate Coldplay is because they make simple but beautiful music and that is something that many people want to hear and a lot of folks don't understand it. Personally, I don't get all the plagiarism claims because I don't think Coldplay sounds like any other artist out there. Maybe it's because I am listening at something deeper and not the shallow parts that most folks listen for.

 

I think someone stated this earlier but every musician is influenced by another musician(s) and do copy their influences in many ways. That is just a part of the music biz. So, basically everyone can claim some form of plagiarism.

 

IMO, this guy is doing this for money and nothing else. I will stand by my previous statement that any respectable musician would have filed suit as soon as the song came out instead of waiting months to do so. I know I would've because it's my work and I would want credit for it. You simply don't wait months to do something. The song has been played so much that there is no way it took him this long to determine whether his song was being copied by Coldplay. Until he proves it otherwise, I just think he's in it for the money and not the recognition. So I guess he doesn't care about his music as much as he claims. Sorry, but that is how I feel.

In a lot of ways George had a similar temperment and personality to Chris (though George was more quiet and introspective), so a trial would probably be tough for him. Cue a fresh round of retirement rumors...:thinking:

So if I burn a few hundred thousand copies of Coldplays latest album, print out the artwork and sell it for $5 cheaper then they can and become the more popular seller of it it's cool with you?

Lets face it, if the shoe was on the other foot you would all be jumping up and down and screaming blue blood murder about some other band ripping off Coldplay.

 

Bollywood movies are made in India, it's a little hard for the American or Brittish law enforcement to do anything about something that happens in an entirely other country.

Satch is a great guitarist, but is a TOTALLY different genre than Coldplay. He is not even close to something they would even be interested in listening to, probably actually have never heard much of him. Guitar is just one instrument, and actually is probably the most over-rated instrument. Guys who can "shred" are a dime a dozen. Guys that can play up and down the neck as fast as lighting but have no idea how to keep a beat or even read sheet music. I'm not saying Satch falls into this category, but alot of "shredders" do and Satchfan probably is one of them.

 

The melody and guitar riff are similar, theres no doubt to that. However I do not think that an artist would waste there time turning a guitar riff into a vocal melody. Even so, it doesn't match...Chris starts with "I used to" and THEN the guitar riff it so called copies starts and then "Ceaser'd rise" is two seperate notes while the guitar riff alternates those notes back and forth during that part.

 

Anyways long story short, there is 4-5 notes max consecutive similarity and to constitute as plagarism there needs to be at least 8 consective.

 

I know very little about Satriani, but I respect him a lot less now for sueing a fellow musician. Get over over and make more music, if they were "influenced" by it...take pride that someone made a great song and was "influenced" by a pretty solid guitar riff.

Will you quite with this idiotic burned C.D. analogy? It's not more than five notes, in fact you can basically reduce it to three "doooo-do-do". You have in no way proven that coldplay has done anything wrong. Satriani is not entitled to profit from every song that features those 4 notes that fall in the same order (not that they're even the same notes...), I don't doubt that we could find that same sequence hundreds of times in past songs. I'll bet somebody from the 1920s could sue and make millions off the many ruthless plagiarizers running around.
