Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

This is getting to the point of comical. Unlike most polls, this one has a correct answer: I DON'T KNOW. Look, I love Coldplay and could care less about Satriani. But it is a joke that people are indicating that they KNOW whether Coldplay sampled Satriani's song. YOU DON'T KNOW JACK! Do you follow Chris Martin around 24 hours per day? Do you know what he listens to on his ipod? The answer is a clear and unequivocal NO! You THINK you know what happened because you follow the band closely. You THINK you know they would not steal because they asked permission for "Talk." The truth is that you do not KNOW what they did, and simply because they asked for permission in the past does not mean that it is done EVERY SINGLE TIME. All I am saying is that you are free to your OPINION, but stop stating it like it is an indisputable FACT. The band has not even commented on this yet (post lawsuit). For crying out loud, be an objective, critical thinker instead of a mindless puppet. There is enough of a similarity where we need to hear from the parties involved. Until that happens, stop acting like the judge, jury, and executioner.

This is not a strong argument. Since you don't know what happened behind "closed doors," you can not speculate with any level of certainty. Only two parties know: Coldplay and Joe Satriani. Until we are told otherwise, your accusations are unfair.

I'm not using it as an argument, I am just saying how I feel. Look, everyone is going to speculate what happened because of how this thing is playing out and what this guy wants. Does it not seem odd that he's only asking for money and not credit? I've stated this plenty of times but I feel that it is awfully strange for a musician, who is supposed to take pride in their work, to only ask for money but no credit. Any professional whether it's a musician, artist, actor, writer, and so forth wants credit for their own creation along with monetary compensation, but not this guy. His actions makes people speculate as to what happened. I also said in an earlier post that I thought the reason why he might not have been asking for credit is because it's not his own work and now that looks possible.

BTW...I have listened to the songs and I said what I thought about 'em in my first post. Don't get me wrong, I have no ill will to this guy but I'm losing respect for this guy because of his lack of wanting credit for something that he supposely created. If one doesn't even want credit but only money then how does that make them look? IMO, it does not make them look good at all.

What does the 40 year old virgin have to do with Coldplay? They aren't Asia, you know. :laugh3:

I've never seen the movie but I like Asia. LOL!!!

"You know how I know you're gay? You like Coldplay." -40 Year Old Virgin

Chris Martin's response:

"Great then. I think that I would be worried if we only appealed to very straight, right wing, white men."

:D

Does it not seem odd that he's only asking for money and not credit? I've stated this plenty of times but I feel that it is awfully strange for a musician, who is supposed to take pride in their work, to only ask for money but no credit.

Please tell me how you KNOW Satriani did not ask for credit in any pre-law suit conversation with Coldplay.

Please tell me how you KNOW Satriani did not ask for credit in any pre-law suit conversation with Coldplay.

Tell me how come he is not asking for it NOW. His lawsuit is only asking for royalities and no credit. I guess you think that is normal. If he asked for it then but was refused don't you think that he would also want it now along with royalities? I would think so but he's not doing that. Again, how come no one thinks that is odd for a respective musician? I tell my students to take credit for this work but I guess getting credit for something you created is not important since it has no real monetary value. Heck, if it was anyone else they would also be asking for credit/recognition. Oh well, whatever.

It's nice that you and others joined the board only to discuss this topic. LOL!!

"Guys seriously, half the reason people call us "gay" sometimes is because some Coldplay fans tend to be a tad sensative. No matter what band you are there are always gonna be plenty of haters. I *()&^%^ hate Kanye West but there are PLENTY of people who like him. Just the way it goes. Don't take being called "gay" and people bashing Coldplay so personally. It just means they have caught plenty of people's attention. Would you rather them say "oh, who is this Coldplay?". Be proud of who you are... some of my best friends have said I'm "gay for Coldplay" and I tell them...yeah...I guess I probably am a little...because there is no denying that I love the band so why hide it or be ashamed. The lead singer of my band actually IS gay (and actually doesn't even care for Coldplay) and he has no problem admitting it...If someone wants to give him a hard time about it that is their problem. "

As I said in an earlier post, I think the reason Coldplay fans can sometimes be sensitive is that much of the critisism directed at them goes far beyond the usual "there music's shit" stuff common to all bands, and frequently takes the form of incredibly cruel barbs directed at the band (or their fans) as people. Unlike most people (appearently), I don't personally know any members of Coldplay, I have no idea what they're like as people (beyiond their public persona), therefore, I am unqualified to comment on anything but their music, which IMHO i quite good.

As I saidmy reason for believing that they did not copy the song is based on pragmatic reasons and is two-fold:

GIVEN THAT: Joe Satriani is in point of fact a quite well known artist.

I find it therefore hard to believe that:

1. Coldplay (or any artist) would be stupid enough to think noone would catch blatant plagiarism.

and

2. That if the song was copied, none of the literally hundreds of musically aware people involved with the record prior to release would catch it and blow the whistle on them.

Radio Exile’s Official Timeline To Coldplay Ripping Everybody Off (As We See It)

Yes, we’ve heard that Joe Satriani is allegedly suing Coldplay [link]. Stealing other people’s music and putting it out as your own work is despicable-ish. Coldplay should be stoned in some…stoning place for their misdeeds, however, making such an announcement the day after said album is nominated for 7 Grammys is pretty low too.

We’re pretty sure YOU haven’t heard is our take on what really happened (and will happen) during this saga, so we’re hear to clear the air a bit. Pay attention, this is some confusing stuff.

A Long, Long Time Ago –

Music is invented

Five Minutes After Music Is Invented –

Somebody plays the chords C, D, G, and Em in that order.

1956 –

Hair metal (minus the hair) alien Joe Satriani is born, apparently to human parents.

1957 –

Satriani is given his first truly awful pair of sunglasses

2004 –

Satriani, while wanking away, plays a C chord, followed by a D, then a G, then an EM.

2007 –

Creaky Boards write “The Song I Didn’t Write”, featuring the chords C, D, G, Em, obviously the folk-pop version of the hair metal song.

2007 –

Chris Martin, exhibiting his phenomenal cosmic powers, watches Creaky Boards perform in New York City at CMJ and is in England, all at the same time.

2008, May –

Coldplay write a song they didn’t write, “Viva La Vida”, featuring the chords C, D, G, Em.

2008, June –

Coldplay play Viva La Vida in an iPod commercial with a really pretentious background (Editor’s note: this is only pretentious if you can’t make purple paisley swirls jump out from the walls behind you. We can do this, so we’re speaking on your behalf.)

2009, January –

Creaky Boards sues Joe Satriani for ripping off his video.

2009, February –

Viva La Vida wins a Grammy.

2009, March –

Every other artist who has ever played a C, D, G, Em uploads a video accusing Coldplay of stealing their chords, causing YouTube to crash.

The moral of the story: Creaky Board’s new album Brooklyn is Love is really good.

Tell me how come he is not asking for it NOW

I can't answer that...my name is not Joe Satriani. Perhaps Satriani did ask for credit and is so fed up with Coldplay that he wants to hurt them financially (yes, all the proceeds from Viva la Vida is still a lot of money even for Coldplay). Perhaps he does not like the song Viva la Vida and does not want royalties to the song but, instead, wants damages for the fact that it was even put out. Would you want your name on, or credit for, a piece of work that you feel another artist stole from you? Again, the answer is I don't know, but at least I am trying to see the other side.

It's nice that you and others joined the board only to discuss this topic. LOL!!

That is rude. You should not make comments that have overtones suggesting that I have no interest in the band outside this case. You don't know what my history is with this band, and I don't feel compelled to reveal it at this time. You should welcome outside voices to pull you out of your "Coldplay Group Think." I passionately love Coldplay, but I am an independent thinker and try to see the other side. You should too...

yeah...I see what your saying...but there are atleast two posters in here who came in here soley to rip on Coldplay fans, you can tell by their sign up date and avitars of Joe. Lets just face it there are things that are suspect on both ends and for the good of music they need to settle it fast.

i havent read the rest of this thread so i dont really know what everyone else is saying... but in my opinon the only similarity is 3 notes played in the same pattern. like the parts where chris sings 'rule THE world' and 'roll THE dice'. but literally nothing else about these songs are similar. there is nothing at all in satriani's song that sounds like the chorus of VlV (hear jerusalem bells a ringin...) and all of the lyrics are 100% thought of by coldplay. so i think its absolutely fucking ridiculous that this guy is sueing for plagiarism when literally 3 notes that are repeated throughout the song happen to be the same and THATS IT. this jus pisses me off soo much...

Pull me out of my "Coldplay Group Think"? Oh, that is a good one. Is it because I am not agreeing with you on every little thing? Look, I am not in that group because I do see the other side. I am an independent thinker who views things in the same way that a scientist would view things. You always have to question things, and when things are not right or don't seem to make sense you still have question 'em. From that point of view there are more questions concerning Joe than there are of Coldplay. It's only human to question and doubt things when things do not appear to be right.

Oh, I would want my name listed on a song if I created that work if it was "stolen". Why? Because it is my work and it should be attributed to me. This attitude about taking credit is not important and that money is the most important thing is ridiculous. What is that telling people? But, I guess that is just a reflection of society...screw creative recognition and just ask for the money.

Also, every other artists has their name listed on their work so why not Joe? Again, I said that's what making this whole thing suspicious for many folks which is not being answered by anyone. Instead that part is ignored.

I'm not trying to be rude but when you see people who just joined and this is the only thread they are posting in there are gonna be doubts about why they're here.

Oh well, whatever.

Pull me out of my "Coldplay Group Think"? Oh, that is a good one. Is it because I am not agreeing with you on every little thing?

It would be impossible for you to agree or disagree with me. I openly admit that I do not know whether the section is Satriani influenced or a pure coincidence.

From that point of view there are more questions concerning Joe than there are of Coldplay.

SAYS WHO. At this point in time I think Coldplay has a lot more explaining to do than Satriani. After all, his song came out first. Coming to your conclusion, and filing in the blanks as you see appropriate, does make you guilty of "Coldplay Group Think." Just because Satriani is asking for financial compensation, a common means of remuneration in intellectual property cases, does not make his motives suspect.

Oh, I would want my name listed on a song if I created that work if it was "stolen". Why? Because it is my work and it should be attributed to me.

That is what YOU would do. YOU are NOT Joe Satriani! Look at it from his point of view. Perhaps he hates Viva la Vida and does not want his name name connected to it in any way. For example, Coldplay may not want Lil Wayne to steal the piano section of Speed of Sound and place it in one of his songs. Then again, maybe they do. But just giving someone formal recognition when you feel like your music has been used without your permission is not going to always constitute an appropriate remedy. This is especially true if you are offended by the way and manner in which it is being used. Why can't you see that point?

This is getting to the point of comical. Unlike most polls, this one has a correct answer: I DON'T KNOW. Look, I love Coldplay and could care less about Satriani. Mindless puppet? Wow. Well if you want to get into name calling.... I will call you pathetic. Yes, pathetic. Look at yourself. You created an account to join this forum, for the sole purpose of arguing about this issue, disagreeing with us, and I'm not so sure you love Coldplay. If you do, you aren't a real fan because as Chris Martin said "If you listen to Coldplay, you're intelligent, very good looking and down right brilliant." And you aren't striking me as any. And you talk like we have no idea what the band would do. I'm sorry, but you're wrong. You are correct that we don't know 100%. Obviously that is impossible. But if you know a person well enough, you can predict how they are going to act in certain situations. You know things about them. We follow this band. We listen to every interview, we read blogs, news... the list goes on my friend. I bet we know more about this band and what they are about than some people working on tour for Coldplay... not to mention you. Coldplay are a good bunch. They care about people. They donate shitloads of money to charity. They put their lives into their music. Chris Martin does not take criticism well, because he is self conscious about his work... but the one song he is certain is good, is Viva la Vida. That says something mate. So fine, we may not know 100% that this song is original. But guess what, based on the best judgement call you can make.... a judgement of their characters, we can say its theirs. And I'll bet my life that that is how its decided in court. And you know what.... the Talk argument is the strongest one in this case. Hate to break it to you. It's such a strong point and I don't see how you can't see that. If they have a history for accrediting artists for small 8 bar riffs.... and giving them money for it.. theres no reason why they wouldn't do it again. That's how courts work my friend. If COldplay had a history of stealing... do you think it'd go the same way? No. Its not about the money for them. Joe is about the money. Do us a favor, and stop posting on this forum unless you have something nice to say about our favorite band. It's an insult. None of us believe that there is a possibility this is ripped off.

Wow! So let's dissect this sentence.

1. You know exactly what Joe Satriani's motives are.

2. I can only post on this forum if I have something NICE to say about Coldplay.

3. And no one in this forum detects enough similarity to even entertain the possibility that it was lifted.

COLPLAY GROUP THINK ON DISPLAY!!!

By the way, I don't care whether you think I am a fan or not. You don't know me.

1. I know he wants all of the earnings from the song... so do you

2. I didn't say that. I told you to do us a favor. Thanks.

3. We entertained the possibility that they sound similar. But an 8 bar phrase, in a different key, that isn't exactly the same... that isn't even the chorus.... No, thats not plagiarism. I've researched this a lot. The case doesn't hold water.

You're right I don't know you. But you obviously have no intention of discussing anything about the band or what you like about them in any other forum. SO far mate, you've got nil friends in here.

And you know what.... the Talk argument is the strongest one in this case. Hate to break it to you. It's such a strong point and I don't see how you can't see that

I will cede to you that the Talk argument shows a history of crediting other artists IF, and only if, you will agree that Chris Martin has gone on record numerous times as claiming that Coldplay openly takes from other bands (which, besides the Talk example, go unaccredited). Again, we are talking about the blurry line between inspiration and plagiarism. Even if Chris was joking, his lines about plagiarism will come up if this goes to trial. THAT is how the court system works.

SO far mate, you've got nil friends in here

I am not looking for friends, I am looking to debate serious points. That is more important to me than the HUGS and KOOL-AID that you seem to want.

Last post by me was uncalled for...I apologize. NOT because I am looking to make friends but because it was rude. I am only trying to make objective points in an environment where objective thought seems to have flown away.

^ Its hard to expect the collective group not to get pissed about this, they are defending the band at any cost.

I see what you are sayin, I really do...just don't know if your timing is any less suspect that Joe's?

1. I know he wants all of the earnings from the song... so do you

Wow, repeating what you said with no explanation! WHat a magnificent argument! None of us know mroe then a few soundbyte worthy quotes and absolutely nothing from either artist, and yet you're completely fine with assuming the world out of it? THat's nothing but arrogance.

2. I didn't say that. I told you to do us a favor. Thanks.

The favour being, stop posting on the board unless have speak positively of Coldplay.

3. We entertained the possibility that they sound similar. But an 8 bar phrase, in a different key, that isn't exactly the same... that isn't even the chorus.... No, thats not plagiarism. I've researched this a lot. The case doesn't hold water.

Except you don't know what you're talking about. Did your "research" involve reading Youtube comments by twelve year old cretins? It doesn't matter what sections the melodies are. If I take a Coldplay chorus and make it a verse, is it suddenly not plaguarism? No, don't be stupid. It also doesn't matter what key it is in - if I take a Coldplay song and digitally alter the key and call it my own song, does that means I'll get away with it? No, for god almighty sakes, it doesn't matter what key the song is in, music doesn't work like that. Both songs still have, regardless of what key they are in, the exact same ii-IV-I-iv chord progression, similar melody that also repeats itself in the same manner, as well as the same soft rock feel and tempo. Regardlessof the validity of the lawsuit, that is what they'll be working with, and it's silly that you won't acknowledge at least that.

You're right I don't know you. But you obviously have no intention of discussing anything about the band or what you like about them in any other forum. SO far mate, you've got nil friends in here.

You're saying that like a bad thing. The fact that 90% of the people don't have the simple platience to admit that an unusual legal case, which they know next to nothing about, might be more complcated then it looks, I don't think I'd want any.

^ well the chord progression argument is always lame. 4-5 note melody comparision.... yeah I'll buy it as something that needs to be cleared up. Same tempo? it does seem so but the videos out there that run the songs together they do space out from each other to sound off...I would suggest that one songs tempo is about 3-4 bpm faster than the others.

And come on, Joe Satriani "soft rock" feel? You would probably be shunned from a Joe Satriani forum for saying that...the songs "feel" nothing alike. The guitar riff in question is the high point of Joe's song and it's the low point of Viva la Vida....Coldplay uses strings, church bells, synth and even a faint dulcimer in their song.

Like I've said before, they really should just pay him to go away, this is a huge PR nightmare.

And wasp2020, if you are a true musician in a band you know how easy it is to be "influenced" by other music even if what you produce sounds NOTHING like what you were influenced by.

Like when they said that speed of sound was influenced/tried to recreate the drums or what ever from this song called running up that hill form Kate Bush!...That song sounds NOTHING like Speed of Sound!....that was funny!

^ Its hard to expect the collective group not to get pissed about this, they are defending the band at any cost.

I see what you are sayin, I really do...just don't know if your timing is any less suspect that Joe's?

Perhaps my timing is poor. But defending the band AT ANY COST is INEXCUSABLE when you are not privy to all the facts. I am playing devil's advocate because there are two sides to every story. I am not against anyone having their opinion, but the hatred directed towards Joe Satriani is unacceptable and I DON'T EVEN LIKE HIS MUSIC. The comments that "Satriani fans" have made are no less venomous than the responses yielded by Coldplay fans. They love Satriani just the same as you and I love Coldplay. I have not said one negative thing about Coldplay (just raised possible points), and look at what has happened here. I have seen Coldplay in concert 7X, have met every single band member on multiple occasions, have every CD that has been put out (including a lot of the rarities), but people here have jumped to the conclusion that I am a non-fan because I see that THERE IS A POSSIBILITY that Coldplay lifted a section of his music. People have jumped to conclusions about me in the name of protecting the band. What else have people jumped to conclusions about in the name of blind faith? Just wait until the band makes a statement, and we start to get more facts. Yes, group think and blind faith do make me sick, and I think that people who display these characteristics need to check themselves.
