Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

Hi Fanboys, get back to me when whoever-the-hell is the guitarist for coldplay (only 12 year old fanboys would know) is one of the most respected guitarists in the world, just as Joe is.

Mention the guitarist from coldplay's name (his name, not "the guitarist from coldplay") to a million people and a hell of a lot less will know who he is compared to those who know who Joe is.

Get back to me when they can write as great a piece as this:

satriani's just pissed cos he hasn't the songwriting talent of coldplay, i mean they're both rich and famous, he doesn't need to sue

Hi Satchfan, I'm 22 and a woman. Coldplay's guitarist is called Johnny Buckland. Get back to me when you can post without stereotyping an entire fanbase.

Hi Littlewhiteshadows. I notice you say you're 22. Coldplay seem to have been around since 1996. This would put you squarely in the young teen fanboy (a term, like postman) category. Or did you only start listening when they gained more mainstream success by hiring pop producers to help make music more easily marketed to young teens?

Thanks for playing "lady".

Edit: Also, that's his name? Wow, I thought I'd atleast recognise it when I read it but nope, nothing. Never heard this guys name in my life. My comment still stands, ask a million random people who knows "Johnny Buckland" and who knows "Joe Satriani" who do you think will pull the larger numbers? If you say Johnny you know you're kidding yourself.

The thing is, even now I dont hear much from him, hes not played much on the radio(at least not here in the UK), his videos are not played on any music channel either!!!! The only thing I see of him is his name devider on the record store shelves!!!!

Yet the thing is, he is in my age group(I am 50)!!!!!:laugh3::laugh3:

Of course he's not played on the radio much, he's not a mass produced product. Play the clip I linked above and tell me you've never heard that tune (other then in a coldplay song probably lol).

When was the last time this "Jonny Buckland" was invited on a G3 tour for being revered as one of the three best guitarists in the world? Never?

Please don't try to compare a master musician with someone who throws together some basic guitar work.

Please don't try and compare a music band that has its own Wikipedia page for awards won with a nobody guitarist, who's set the record for most nominations at the Grammys without winning anything...:dozey:

Oh, and I forget, don't compare talent with money, one thing Satriani never had, another he obviously wants.

It may be true that not everyone knows the name of Coldplay's guitarist, but a whole hell of a lot more people know Coldplay the band than know Joe Satriani. It's also true that Coldplay have been around for a relatively short period of time, so really, it's kind of silly to compare Jonny to a guy who's been around as a solo artist for decades. But hey, thanks for enlightening us to the fact that apparently, discovering an new artist if you're young makes you a "fanboy". You must be bored today!

Cool song. :) ... But I'm not sure how this turned into a discussion about who's a better guitarist. Indeed, I imagine many Coldplay fans would acknowledge Satriani's rather incredible talent. His performances certainly show more impressive guitar work than Jonny's, but that's the nature of their respective musical styles.

At any rate, I think we can all agree that from time to time, songs will sound similar. There's only so many notes, so many chords, so many rhythms. If pressed, I'm sure one could find a matching melody to almost any song.

He's had 14 grammy nominations. Coldplay has had four lol, great arguement :)

Let's do a little checking on this "guitarist everyone will know vs this nobody Joe Satriani"

http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=Jonny+Buckland&word2=Joe+Satriani

What's that? Joe wins by an awesome 3177000 more google hits then this "Jonny" fella?

Wrong again.

Coldplay has 7 nominations alone this year, and have won 3 Grammys, not 3 nominations rofl, and will likely clean up this year too.

Your revered God has...oh, yeah, 0.

Get your facts straight.

Ahh, I was just spurred on by all the "who is this idiot" and "he sucks and has no talent" posts by the fanboys and girls. Thought I'd point out the technical superiority of this guy who "sucks" so bad.

Yeah, it's easy to win grammys when you don't have to compose your own music and then you have a producer telling you how to package your stolen songs so they will sell more to tweens I guess.

Get over it, Joe Satriani never was and never will be as big as Coldplay, go back to your hole and cry over your records while we enjoy actual good music.

I'd prefer it that way actually. If I had to see the latest craze jumpers running around in Satch shirts, putting Satch stickers on their cards, telling everyone how much they're in love with Satch I wouldn't like it. Actually, I would, it'd be good for him but I'd prefer he continue making his style of music rather then be signed to a major with producers being shoved down his throat telling him how to write his music so it will be more "pop" and move more units.

Edit: In 20 years Coldplay will have been a phase, some now 35-45 year olds will fondly remember going to a concert and kissing a boy/girl. Satch will still be a benchmark of guitar technique though.

Also, does anyone else find it funny Coldplays album came with all that copy protection trash to stop people "stealing their songs". LOLOLOLOLOL. Pity there was nothing put on the producers ears to stop him telling the band to steal this song.

Considering that on X and Y they did actually lift a rift from Kraftwerk AND asked permission to use it, I highly doubt they would have intentionally lifted a rift or melody for Viva. If they had heard this song and liked it and wanted to use it, they would have asked permission and given him credit.

End of story.

Coldplay's first actual album was released in 2000, love. Go back to Wikipedia and check those facts. I was 14...I was also not a boy. 14 year olds can have taste in music, your point is mute. You are a zealot who refuses to believe that any music other than that which you like is valid and that makes your points meaningless to me...do you not understand that even if I was a young teen when I first started listening to Coldplay, that I'm not now? And that, when I went to see Coldplay a week ago, there were people of all ages there...people that were well over 12 and probably older than you when Coldplay first released any music. We're talking 50s and 60s, mate. You made out that 12 year olds were their only fans NOW...idiot, make your mind up!

I know Joe Satriani. I also know that I don't like Joe Satriani, and that the video you posted bores the shit out of me. Coldplay do not. That is a personal taste, which you are not going to change with your misinformed trolling. Please go back to whatever trolling hole it is that you came from and stop needlessly pissing us off by asking us to ask 1 million people if they've heard of Jonny Buckland. Each of their albums has gone double or triple platinum in the US alone. Platinum, in the US, means 1 million records. So even if only half the people who have bought a Coldplay record in the US know their guitarist's name, that's still a million in one country...you can't state that more people will know Joe Satriani just because you like him more. Why don't you go out and ask those 1 million right now yourself. By the time you've finished I might care about the result.

I am 50!!!! I was born in 1958!!!!!! Coldplay happens to appeal to me, far more than this Bo Matriani idiot!!!!!!!!!

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:

LOL.

Someone asked why it took so long for Joe Satriani to sue.

Maybe the fact, Joe has just finished touring and now has time to sit down and listen to every song released from every artist and pick them all to bits to find songs he can claim as his own.....

What a bunch of drugfucked misfits. No one has said they copied the song

"Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."

Hi-fives to FixYou319, this is my point. To call all Coldplay fans 12 year old fanboys is insulting, misinformed, and has fuck all to do with whose music is better.
