Not quite what I predicted but hey, still a substantial ratio.

Yeah well, people would need to have heard of him to call him an asshole :)

Considering that on X and Y they did actually lift a rift from Kraftwerk AND asked permission to use it, I highly doubt they would have intentionally lifted a rift or melody for Viva. If they had heard this song and liked it and wanted to use it, they would have asked permission and given him credit.

End of story.

They only gave credit once it was pointed out. Not sure how they expected to get away with it though. They tried putting it off as "we were inspired by" but eventually they wrote to kraftwork to try to dodge a lawsuit, it worked.

Coldplay's first actual album was released in 2000, love. Go back to Wikipedia and check those facts. I was 14...I was also not a boy. 14 year olds can have taste in music, your point is mute.

Once again, "fanboy" is a term just like "postman", it isn't a gender. So you were 14 years old and the epitome of fine musical pallet. OK then..

You are a zealot who refuses to believe that any music other than that which you like is valid and that makes your points meaningless to me...

Love, you guys are the ones sounding like zelots, refusing to even accept that this song is anything like Satch's, telling everyone Satch is untallented etc etc

do you not understand that even if I was a young teen when I first started listening to Coldplay, that I'm not now? And that, when I went to see Coldplay a week ago, there were people of all ages there...people that were well over 12 and probably older than you when Coldplay first released any music. We're talking 50s and 60s, mate. You made out that 12 year olds were their only fans NOW...idiot, make your mind up!

Really can't get over that point can you? I'm not saying that people of all ages don't like Coldplay, I'm sure a lot do, I am just saying that it's mass-marketed pop, the biggest buyers are young teens of pop marketed to (and made for) the masses.

I know Joe Satriani. I also know that I don't like Joe Satriani, and that the video you posted bores the shit out of me. Coldplay do not. That is a personal taste, which you are not going to change with your misinformed trolling. Please go back to whatever trolling hole it is that you came from and stop needlessly pissing us off by asking us to ask 1 million people if they've heard of Johnny Buckland. Each of their albums has gone double or triple platinum in the US alone. Platinum, in the US, means 1 million records. So even if only half the people who have bought a Coldplay record in the US know their guitarist's name, that's still a million in one country...you can't state that more people will know Joe Satriani just because you like him more. Why don't you go out and ask those 1 million right now yourself. By the time you've finished I might care about the result.

Now you're arguing my point. They're music that's board-room produced to make cash, they make bland music that people can tap their foot to while doing secretarial work or playing nintendo. The music is MADE to appeal to the masses, made to be generic, of course it's going to sell well.

I understand the technical intricacies of Joes work will confuse you and thus bore you. I understand you are Miss Average Joe Smith (excuse the joe :) ) and you are excited by basic music.

I gotta say all satriani fans seem to be mid-western middle-aged tools with beer guts, pony tails and goatees....

I mean who else like shitty pointy-headstock guitar wank music?

I bet you like yngwie malmsteen as well dont you, and you sit at home and play a shitty pointy head stock guitar in your bedroom, much to the dismay of your long suffering wife.

Satriani is such a dick, only dicks wear sunglasses inside.

14 grammy niminations- what can I say? A lot of people that are in charge of grammy nominations are fat middle aged nonces with pony tails and goatees.

He's had 14 grammy nominations. Coldplay has had four lol, great arguement :)

Let's do a little checking on this "guitarist everyone will know vs this nobody Joe Satriani"

http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=Jonny+Buckland&word2=Joe+Satriani

What's that? Joe wins by an awesome 3177000 more google hits then this "Jonny" fella?

It's not about whose music is better, It's about theft...

Someone asked why it took so long for Joe Satriani to sue.

Maybe the fact, Joe has just finished touring and now has time to sit down and listen to every song released from every artist and pick them all to bits to find songs he can claim as his own.....

What a bunch of drugfucked misfits. No one has said they copied the song

"Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."

Oh good, another one!

1) Has he not seen a TV? Or put on a radio? If he has, he will have seen an iTunes ad with 'his' song on or heard some DJ playing it for the 1000th time...it's hardly like Viva la Vida hasn't been in the public domain, therefore the touring point = useless.

2) Never taken drugs in my life, thanks very much. 12 year olds taking drugs, indeed :D

3) Yes, by calling it plagarism and saying that Viva la Vida incorporating "substantial original portions" of Satch's song he is alleging that Coldplay have copied him. How can you even think otherwise, you complete and utter moron...

Get the fuck out of here you troll, Jonny Buckland > Joe Satriani ever was, so go back your hole and leave us alone.

I agree about the troll part. Buckland is a completely ifferent type of guitarist than Satriani is. I dont even know Satrianis music but he is very widely respected and considered one of the best guiatarists ever. Complaring Buckland and Satriani is dumb because Buckland is mostly a rhythm guitarist type of player over a lead style. The fact is the songs melodies and some of leads sound very similiar, whether by accident or influence or plagiarism. Like I said before there had been so much music that it is impossible for songs not to sound alike. I'm not mad at Satriani though, the guy may honestly believe he has been ripped off without credit, I dont think we should bash him, but I also dont think coldplay should be bashed until we know the facts.

They only gave credit once it was pointed out. Not sure how they expected to get away with it though. They tried putting it off as "we were inspired by" but eventually they wrote to kraftwork to try to dodge a lawsuit, it worked.

Once it was pointed out? Trust me. They knew from the get go that they were lifting the melody from Computer Love. They have talked about it. When Talk finally turned into a song they thought might get released, they wrote to Kraftwerk to get permission to use it. Kraftwerk is credited on the X and Y album sleeve for Talk.

They did not release Talk and then get permission from Kraftwerk to dodge a lawsuit. Did not happen.

:)

they make bland music that people can tap their foot to while doing secretarial work or playing nintendo

Whereas Joe provides perfect music to kill yourself to.

Ohh no wait, sorry, it makes you want to kill yourself. My mistake.

Satriani is such a dick, only dicks wear sunglasses inside.

Hats too? What about hats in-doors? Is that OK?

:lol::lol::lol:

:laugh3: :laugh3:

Get over it, Joe Satriani never was and never will be as big as Coldplay, go back to your hole and cry over your records while we enjoy actual good music.

I would just stop feeding the troll. Honestly you sound no better than him when youre blasting a guy who is obviously a great musician who just believes he was ripped off. I understand the troll is getting you fired up, but responding to him and basically getting into a "he sucks because" battle is lame.

Once again, "fanboy" is a term just like "postman", it isn't a gender. So you were 14 years old and the epitome of fine musical pallet. OK then..

Who exactly are you to say that I wasn't?

Love, you guys are the ones sounding like zelots, refusing to even accept that this song is anything like Satch's, telling everyone Satch is untallented etc etc

Um, most people agree it sounds like it, but anything can sound like anything, 11 other songs are alleging plagarism against Viva la Vida alone, surely that tells you it's most likely to just be a coincidental use of a popular melody? I don't think he's untalented, I just don't personally like him and prefer Coldplay. That is MY CHOICE. I really don't understand how you can claim you're not a zealot when you completely refuse to believe other people might have different but still equally valid musical tastes to those you have...

Really can't get over that point can you? I'm not saying that people of all ages don't like Coldplay, I'm sure a lot do, I am just saying that it's mass-marketed pop, the biggest buyers are young teens of pop marketed to (and made for) the masses.

What I can't get over is your huge generalisation without any research whatsoever. You are having a go purely because you prefer Joe Satriani, without any regard for anyone else's freedom of opinion, whatever age they may be.

I understand the technical intricacies of Joes work will confuse you and thus bore you. I understand you are Miss Average Joe Smith (excuse the joe :) ) and you are excited by basic music.

Please don't patronise me or other Coldplay fans. I'm not confused by supposed intricacies, nor am I solely excited by the music of Coldplay. Just because I like Coldplay and not Joe Satriani, doesn't mean I might not listen to a dozen other acts with equally intricate and brilliant musical techniques, and this is what you are failing to understand. The music you like does not completely influence the person you are. Except in your case, perhaps.

I understand the technical intricacies of Joes work will confuse you and thus bore you. I understand you are Miss Average Joe Smith (excuse the joe :)) and you are excited by basic music.

You think Joe is better than Coldplay with no valid argument behind it other than you think Coldplay 'ripped him off'.

You can have your opinion but theres no need to come to a forum of dedicated Coldplay fans and parade your ignorant and arrogant opinions in front of us all, when you have not contributed here before.

Thats why we all think your a cock sucking motherfucker :P.

Well my quick take (36 years old in case it suddenly becomes important).

* Satriani is a good guitarist and one of the best of the guitar rock instrumental genre (Steve Vai wasn't bad in the day too)

* There are similarities in parts to Joe's song.

* That of course does not show intent.

* Part of the court case will likely hinge on whether Joe can prove that Coldplay a British band actually heard this American artist's song which is only 5 years old and likely never played on a radio station. Coldplay do give credit on who they are influenced by on songs and I have no doubt that Joe was not on their Ipod play list nor ever purchased.

* Did Chris write the initial meldoy or did Jonny? I could see if Jonny did he might have checked out Joe's work at some point(as a fellow guitarist). If it was Chris then that really casts doubt.

* Whether Joe wins or loses Chris might finally get the kick he needs to stop namechecking his inspirations and have the band rest more on their own laurels. While I'm sure many bands write songs by being influenced by other bands, Coldplay have been more transparent to this process then many artists. You can't be the next U2 if you constantly talk about U2 and Radiohead and Bono dosen't spend all day talking about their inspirations (although they probably have many) or who they want to be when they grow up. :(

* Don't shoot, I'm with the band.

 Ok at least you have a sense of humour. Do you have a pony tail and a goatee by any chance?

Hats too? What about hats in-doors? Is that OK?

I agree with this, I'm giving up now, because no amount of dumbed down explanation with flipcharts and pretty pictures is ever going to get those guys to understand that just because people don't like Joe Satriani and prefer Coldplay doesn't mean that they are tweeny morons who deserve no opinion on music. Everyone deserves an opinion on music. What you like is personal opinion and is only a fraction of the person you are. To call someone average and confused by intricacies just because they're a Coldplay fan just proves that these people are never going to agree with that, and that they think we're idiots because we like Coldplay's music. We know we're not, that's all that matters.

agreed. now its up to the lawyers.

We know we're not, that's all that matters.

Here, here. Well I am off to bed, hope this stuff dies down fellow Coldplayers.

Peace out.

I haven't argued that he's better, I'm just argueing against the "ignorant and arrogant" opinions of all the coldplay fanboys that this "no body" who "sucks" has "no right to sue our dear coldplay boys who could walk on water then turn it into wine".

But that's OK, if you prefer to live in your safe little box where everyone holds the same opinion as yourself go ahead and do that, be warned though it may make you ignorant and arrogant, oh wait, it already has.

 Ok at least you have a sense of humour. Do you have a pony tail and a goatee by any chance?

I do! But alas, I'm mid 20's and live in Australia sorry :(

The girlfriend hasn't become a wife yet so no nagging about guitar stocks or whatever you where on about before.

I haven't argued that he's better

You just said Coldplay was basic music and Joe has better intricacies .

I am not really ignorant and arrogant, only to people who deserve it because they unjustly treat others like that.

I do! But alas, I'm mid 20's and live in Australia sorry :(

AHAHA I knew it!!!! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA :lol::lol::lol::lol:

It does haves some simularities, but the guitar part in satch's song are sung in Viva. Also none of us should be arguing, after all we all just love music. This will all be sorted out eventually, nothing we say will change anything a Judge says. I also believe it highly unlikely that after all the years of song writing and giving credit were need be, Coldplay would copy the riff and see if no one would notice. Those gentleman are no idiots.

Yes I doubt coldplay listen to satriani anyway.... after all none of coldplay have pony tails and goatees

"Now you're arguing my point. They're music that's board-room produced to make cash, they make bland music that people can tap their foot to while doing secretarial work or playing nintendo. The music is MADE to appeal to the masses, made to be generic, of course it's going to sell well."

I guess that's what you tell yourself to legitimize your belief that they ripped off your hero. Sorry, but I used to live in a city known for it's love of guitar rock and I hate to break it to you, but they used to play Satriani constantly on a well-known generic, inoffensive radio station that people listen to at work. It became sort of a joke to count how many times a day they played the same set of guitar-rock songs that also sounded exactly the same as the next one.

I'm not arguing that he's not talented. My point is that you shouldn't come here bashing people's love of one band as fan-ish by using the same exact method to defend Satriani. Regardless of what you may think you know about Coldplay, if you don't even listen to them, you shouldn't be making ridiculous assertions on one of their fansites.

AHAHA I knew it!!!! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA :lol::lol::lol::lol:

You where somewhat right yeah :(

I don't have an artsie-fartsie goatie and pony tail though. I'm not actually a massive Satriani fan, I just give credit where it's due, he's a masterful musician.

To give you an idea, I'm more into music like this:

[ame=http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=mVAW9zg9Mv4]YouTube - Kalmah-swamphell[/ame]

[ame=http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=jY6sqiA8gj0]YouTube - Entombed - Left Hand Path[/ame]

Edit:

You probably dislike me even more now I've admitted to being Australian. After all, I'm from that country that dared summons your dear leader to court for something as silly as damaging someones car. After all, those public figures who make money from being in the public eye totally have the right to threaten and destroy property for being photographed!
