Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Featured Replies

This Joe guy will get his money.

No he wont- at least not from this lawsuit, dont be silly. But he will no doubt attract some new fans from the publicity, and encourage some of his old fans to listen to his records again. Job done.

Here's the thing right. Satchfan is only giving his side of the story and he's getting this abuse.Maybe some of things he has said as been a bit over the line. If any other artist had alledgedly copied coldplay. Then I'm sure some people on here would be posting in that artists forum doing exactly the same thing as satchyboy here. We're all music fans.Let's spread the love. :P

Im not abusing him, I really do love comic book guy, and satchfan. I love you

it's sort of a win win situation here on both parts. Both will get more publicity whether it be bad or good.People are gonna buy the records which means chi-ching more money for both artists.

The truth is don't think this guy stands a chance

Satchfan mate.

It's obvious that you're partly here to wind people up, which is fair enough, it's the Internet, it happens and it's actually sometimes pretty funny, especially here where there are people deluded enough to believe Coldplay are musically groundbreaking, flawless and the definition of all things good. That said, you can't expect much more from a Coldplaying fan forum than for the vast majority to stick up for the people they are such huge supporters of.

Satchfan: Even if I do find a little scary that people here say they don’t know Satriani (I mean, if you like music, seriously!), first of all not everybody has the obligation to know each and every artist that has come out, specially if you don’t like music without lyrics, as is almost all the music made by Satriani. However, what I do find would match the behavior of a 14 year old person (those that you say are Coldplay fans) is to come to a forum that well, is about Coldplay, as it says in the title and to try to pick up a fight with people that obviously, doh! are fans of Coldplay by "defending" Satch.

I think everybody is welcome here, or at least I have felt it that way in the 4 years I have been around and discussions among things are always expected and is nice to hear many opinions that can complement or change yours but I dont really think anybody here needs you to come and enlighten us with your knowledge about how Coldplay are the worst pop ever. Maybe they are, but we like it and music is no about good music or bad music, is about music you like and music you dont, as simple as that.

The parameters of beauty depend on the people who´s listening or watching or whatever and therefore you have to respect other tastes as the others should respect yours. What I´m trying to say is if you came here just to pick up a fight, you probably should save your breath and your time and go to the Satriani´s forum to speak about ill about Coldplay instead of being here, cause the only thing you are going to get here is, well, contempt. And I dont want to be rude or anything, you maybe came here to join the community and are having some fun by making people get mad but, seriously?!

Ok. About Coldplay... I think they do sound similar, but there are rules for the demands about copyright issues and none of them says: your song cant be similar to the other artists' songs!!!

I heard them both at the same time and there are some similar chords but not complete riffs. And I think Satriani is every respected musician for obvious reasons and he decided to put a demand because he obviously thinks there is something fishy here but, my question is, why after Coldplay was nominated for 7 Grammys? Is not like nobody had heard the song (I mean it sounds even in the damn bathrooms!!) I have heard it everywhere and I don’t hear radio at all so.. Till now? Why?

And is fishy also that another band also said Coldplay stole the SAME SONG to them.. so, who STOLE who? why Coldplay wasn’t demanded for I dont know, "Yes" or "Cementeries of London", why the most popular song of the year?

Now we can’t lose perspective here. Satriani is A HUGE guitar player and plagiarism as occurred before. I just hope I’m right and they are just similar but if that’s the case, I will definitely lose all the respect I had for Satriani and if Coldplay really stole the riff, well, same goes for Coldplay...

I just got done reading every post on this thread and this post pretty much sums up how I feel about everything. I really don't know why people who have such a strong feeling about something think they can magically change someone else's mind who has just as strong a feeling as they do. I have NEVER seen someone change their mind like that i.e. - "coldplay sucks!" "you're right they do suck, I love who ever you love now!"

Satchfan loves Joe Satriani, Kmm1482 loves Coldplay but gets Satriani's music and respects it as well.

How hard is it for someone to say 'I love so-and-so's music, but so-and-so's music I'm not really into, i'd rather listen to so-and-so'. You've stated your opinion and haven't pissed anyone off! I also think this would all be different in person, but since it's the internet...

I don't understand why you came here, to this forum. I mean, why did you attack us after hearing that news? WE didn't WROTE VlV.. WE just LOVE it. You can't come here and say that we are idiots just beacause we like Coldplay and they have problems with "your" Joe.. This is not right.. you defended Joe as you would get any advantages from his legal victory.

Ahhhh, yeah I remember that now, I couldn't figure out who he meant. :dunce:

If it does actually go to jury trial, I fear Chris' many, many comments about being the worlds best plagiarist will come back to haunt him.

Sadly, I fear you're right.

I have a lot of family in California, but sadly not in LA. If there's anything I could do to help the band out I would.

Hi all,

New to the forum, after starting to hear and read this news today.

I'd like to comment, without the intention of winding people up - I don't believe I have anything controversial to say (apart from I am a big fan of Joe Satriani)

Please note, no pony tail, etc.....

I got really into Coldplay with the release of X & Y, before that the earlier albums were occasional players for me. I bought Viva La Vida off the back of my enjoyment of the band and their music, and it's another great one. I'll be at their gig next weekend, really looking forward to it

Being a guitar player I'm also into Satriani, and have been for a long time. I have met him on many occasions and he's just a normal guy, and very humble.

As a musician I can understand the need to defend your tunes, whether or not there's a strong argument here is another matter. There's definitely a similar structure and melody, but....

... to be honest, I've heard a lot worse "borrowing" for want of a better term

I honestly don't believe Joe is doing this for attention, he's succesful enough without it, and has never been an attention seeker, it's not in his nature.

I suspect, and hope, the respective lawyers/record companies sort this out quickly and it will all get forgotten

Meantime, I will continue to enjoy listening to both artists, as they are all fine musicians who create amazing music. Granted, not everyone will like everything by either (or any) artist, but who does.

I mean, I can't stand coffee..... but love a good cuppa :)

Peace to all

P.S Can anyone tell me the setlist for the current tour?

I agree about the troll part. Buckland is a completely ifferent type of guitarist than Satriani is. I dont even know Satrianis music but he is very widely respected and considered one of the best guiatarists ever. Complaring Buckland and Satriani is dumb because Buckland is mostly a rhythm guitarist type of player over a lead style. The fact is the songs melodies and some of leads sound very similiar, whether by accident or influence or plagiarism. Like I said before there had been so much music that it is impossible for songs not to sound alike. I'm not mad at Satriani though, the guy may honestly believe he has been ripped off without credit, I dont think we should bash him, but I also dont think coldplay should be bashed until we know the facts.

Couldn't have put it better myself :)

Maybe these guys can sue Joe Satriani. It was released in 2002. Joe's If I could Fly in 2004.

And why are they suing just now?

VLV has been on air since July.

I am re-quoting this as many people seem to have missed it here in the forum. If there is anyone that should definitely sue is these guys Enannitos Verdes and they should sue Joe Satriani! Listen to the melody in the youtube link. The melodies are uncannily similar and they are both guitar parts. With this evidence, I don´t see how Satriani has any chance to steal any money from Coldplay.

And as somebody else mentioned, Coldplay used someone else´s riff in Talk and filed the proper documents and PAID for using the riff so what would make anyone think that they would steal now? This is ridicolous and any respectable court of law would dismiss this claim.

They do sound similar but I think its more of it being a simple melody issue. Anyone could think it up, so obviously there are going to be melodies that are all similar to it.

Welcome aboard Musicfan!!! :)

You hit the nail right on the head, I wish more people would see things the way you do. I'm sure Chris and the guys AND Joe would appreciate all of us just settling down and listening to all kinds of music.

Jajajajaj OMG

Los Enanitos Verdes??? Seriously??

I never thought i'd find a link to one of their videos here!!!!

And i have to quote one of those youtube comments, cause is exactly what I think......

But you see this is different in many ways to both of them! No-one has copied anyone! I mean do you think Joe satriani listens to ENANITOS VERDES? come on guys! It's so silly!

Just listened to the other song. Satriani doesn't have a leg to stand on in this lawsuit, but maybe a couple of toes.

It will be interesting to see whether or not this is settled out of court. If it makes it to court I think buddy will have a hard time proving anything beyond coincidence.

Ironically, the Creaky Boards or whatever their name is may have done Coldplay a favor. It's the same passage- the "I used to rule the world" part. It's seems like all these different people came up with variations of that snatch of melody independently, and it wasn't until one of them was a huge hit that all the others realized each other's existence.

But all that said, it's a 20 second passage of improvisation in a 6 minute piece. There is no set structure, it wanders in different directions, I'd hardly call it blatant or a significant portion, and don't think many people would notice if it wasn't for Coldplay's song.

Well if Joe Satriani can accept he accidentally played the exact same notes as Los Enanitos Verdes, then I don´t see why he should sue Coldplay...

I don't really want to read 10 pages of arguing but I just wanted to mention that there is a lot more that goes into winning a suit like this than just having a section of your song sound like someone else's song. If there is a certain percentage of difference between the songs, the suit won't hold up. I really think Satriani's case will be pretty weak, but I still expect they settle out of court for a decent sum. I don't really anticipate us hearing about this that much again unless Satriani turns out to be a greedy bastard trying to teach coldplay a "lesson".
