Coldplay, Parc des Princes, 07/09/09

Article dated 8 September, 2009

After having played 2 concerts in a row at a sold-out Bercy last year, Coldplay's Viva La Vida tour stopped one last time in Paris. Obiwi was present at the stadium Parc des Princes to attend the coronation of the new kings of pop.

At 16:30 o'clock: Arrival at Porte d'Auteuil. Many fans wanting a good place in the pit were already waiting for the opening of the gates. After twenty minutes, we finally entered the stadium. After having filled the water bottles, I entered the arena: Impressive! I advanced as quickly as possible to find a good place 50 metres from the scene. Now, you can only wait under a blazing sun ...

First two parts are better than one

At 18:30 o'clock, first movement: Everyone got up, the crowd advanced, we felt that it would soon begin. The pit had been filled up behind us in the meantime. At the bleachers (unroofed seats at sports ground), however, it was for the time being a desert of empty chairs. 19 o'clock: First part: The group Bat For Lashes entered the stage initiating the first words of Glass a cappella. The beating on the drum shook the pit. The audience which, for the first time, discovered this artist was very quiet - not much response. Natasha Khan, aka Bat For Lashes, was not affected by it and connected the titles, mesmerizing the crowd in her mystical gym suit with her arms covered with long feathers. The singles off the latest album Two Suns followed: I Alone, Pearl's Dream... The psychedelic world of Bat For Lashes took us into the dark regions. On the giant screen you could see, a wolf howling at the moon. Too bad that it was still daylight. After 30 minutes, it was time for the last song: The song Daniel having the same tempo as A Forest by the Cure which woke up the crowd a little. Natasha Khan demonstrated her talent of English revelation, even if these songs would find a more beautiful setting in a smaller room. Should be followed closely.

After having waited half an hour, it was time for the second part. (Are you still following me?) At 20 o'clock the sun disappeared behind the ceiling of the Parc des Princes: It was time for The Flaming Lips to ignite the stage! From the introduction to the strains/strokes of supercharged guitars, the singer locked up in a giant bubble inflated by his acolytes. After having "rolled" on the scene, he went for a walk over the pit! Back on stage, it exploded above our heads: Huge colourful balloons, confetti thrown by several guns, smoke of all kinds, dancers disguised ... The Flaming Lips know how to create a good atmosphere! It held less of the blow that came out of the instruments, except for a gong surrounded by strobophobic spots installed next to the drummer. After forty-five minutes of an energetic and devilish set, underlined by a "funeral song" in memory of George Bush, the group, accompanied by construction workers in orange clothes (in charge of various machines) and by dancers in hairy / shaggy clothes, left the scene. Good luck to those removing the tons of confetti for the following acts.

The arrival of Coldplay

At 21:15 the night fell on the Parc des Princes. The bleachers were filled-up. 20,000 people in the pit, 50,000 in total in the stadium. The energy was palpable. Classical music sounded - the Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss. It made the audience become attentive, the eye furtive, trying to spot the band. Suddenly, we recognized the first notes of Life In Technocolor. Crying, screaming, clapping. They were entering the stage! Twirling sparklers, each member of Coldplay took his place. An almost 2-hour-long concert had begun.

Songs were connected without time-out. Chris Martin was in shape. He ran from one end of the stage to the other, jumped, turned around with his arms raised, pretended to fall at the end of a song (Viva la Vida) before he got up and started the next. Other group members kept pace, their leader providing the show. The two giant screens of the outdoor scenes are only one when the bottom of the main stage is animated for Glass Of Water. A film takes us on a journey through space between planets and constellations. The images then switch on the side, and Coldplay seem to board their spaceship in an exhilarating turn.

After Yellow with yellow balloons launched into the public, the entire group moved to the end of one of two paths arranged in the pit for a techno remix of several songs: It was original, but a little confusing. Chris Martin was left alone at his piano for a song before the overwhelming Viva La Vida. From the first notes of violin, the enthusiastic audience started clapping their hands singing the famous "OhOhOohOhOoh chant. The stage vibrated in unison. The songs were connected. Violet Hill, Lost, Strawberry Swing, Lovers In Japan. With the exception of Yes, all the songs off the album "Viva la Vida (Or Death And All His Friends)" were played, not to forget a Clocks anthology, all sung in unison by the fans at the stadium, enthusiastic in advance. Communion with the audience is complete.

Coldplay's tribute to Michael Jackson

Shortly after, the group left the scene at the end of a song by a staircase on the side ... But where did they go? The whole stadium shouted when the audience saw them emerge from nowhere on a small stage located at the bottom of the Parc des Princes stadium! The group started an acoustic set between friends (creating an intimate atmosphere). Chris Martin took out his harmonica for this occasion. After a while Chris Martin asked the Parisian audience to help him: "All of us will now do the wave with the mobile phones". The effect was beautiful! A wave of tiny stars rose and went around the stadium, from the bleachers to the pit. Each raised the screen of his/her mobile phone during the passage of the wave. In this animated video background, Coldplay began an acoustic cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. Soon the Parc des Princes sang in unison from the bottom of their hearts, all moved. A great moment!

Then the group disappeared again, time to return to the big stage against a background of techno remix of Viva La Vida, rather successful. After mini fireworks, the concert was coming to an end. Coldplay walked up to the front of the stage, greeted and thanked the French audience. Then they left the stage before returning to the encore. Chris Martin talked to us one last time before playing: "Usually we give our live CD "LeftRightLeftRightLeft" to everybody present at our concert at the exit, but police did not want us to do that today. Keep your ticket, you can go exchange it for a CD at the Virgin or FNAC. Otherwise, you can also download it - free - on Coldplay's website, http://www.coldplay.com. Then it was time for the last song. Life In Technicolor II - this time with lyrics, the loop is closed, and the evening ended in style.

Tonight, the Parc des Princes hosted the new kings of pop (no offense to U2). 50,000 people united by music, in an atmosphere of madness, it's still nice to see. Coldplay, thank you for this moment of life shared. Viva la vida!
