Well, it makes sense. I think most people say "is" because they're thinking of bands as a group, making it singular, rather than more than one person, which constitutes "are."

 

IDK, I can't ever make up my mind on what to say on that.

i actually go back and forth between "is" and "are". which is kinda dumb, considering the fact that i'll be like, "coldplay is so amazing! they're absolutely great." :thinking:

there's nothing wrong with that, the term 'coldplay' is expressed as a singular object. The union of the 4 into 1 band. When you say 'the band is great' or 'coldplay is fantastic' you refer to one thing. You don't say 'America are' or 'london are'. But when you say 'they are great' you refer to the four members instead of the one group or organization they're also part of.
