Cat Stevens too accuses Coldplay from plagiarism

Featured Replies

To be honest though, he doesn't really seem that arsed about it. He's not stamping his feet up and down, talking about having his heart ripped out, weeping etc like Satriani and he didn't mention any legal action.

Typical

I almost feel sorry for him. He must be desperate for attention

wow, another one who wanna get attention from the public!

(if i dunno about Steven's recent release I might not say so but he just being too sensitive and...self-centered, maybe? LOL)

but still, I think this is somehow a firm backup for the "lacks originality" thing.

LOL :laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3:

AHAHAHAHAH oh dear, that was a good one, after all that Satriani hype, bahahaha xd.gif

...

wait, what? That wasn't a joke?

I mean, I'm a very attentively person, y'know, but is this kind of ZOMG-COLDPLAY-STOLE-MY-SONG-thingy some kind of temporary fashion I missed? :stunned: :uhoh:

:dozey:

That song is definitely boring crap, and of course it sounds like Viva, whats not like it, its got the violins, the extremely catchy melody, the simple drumming, the only thing that is diff is that it actually IS different and a great song.

YouTube - Cat Stevens - The Foreigner Suite Part II[/url]

start listening at about 5:15 and there is a bit of a resemblance.... but it's a realllllly realllly insanely big stretch. like honestly... no.

The second half of the song sounds completely different from the first half and the piano does sound a tiny tiny wee bit similar to vlv - but that could just be cos I was listening for it. I quite like Cat Stevens, he's done some good stuff in the past and he's not making that big a deal about any plagarism so ...meh... I don't think Coldplay have anything to worry about...

Funny how just vlv is attracting all these claims, not any of the other recent singles...:\

It really sounds nothing like it....even if it did sound the same (which it doesn't), big deal? SO many songs use the same chord progressions. Look at this YouTube video, it's 30+ songs using the same chords.

Lol I was just about to post that. Here's the NME Article:

Cat Stevens: 'Coldplay stole my song!'

Singer accuses Chris Martin and co of ripping him off

Add Coldplay to MyNME

Cat Stevens has said that he believes that Coldplay's hit 'Viva La Vida' is a take-off of his own song, 'Foreigner Suite'.

Coldplay recently denied accusations by guitarist Joe Satriani, who claims that the band ripped him off for the song – but Stevens has since told The Sun that it's he who the band had been taking inspiration from.

"There's been this argument about Coldplay stealing this melody from Joe Satriani," he said. "But, if you listen to it, it's mine! It's the [1973 song] 'Foreigner Suite', it is!"

Stevens did not suggest that he would take legal action against the band.

In 2003 The Flaming Lips agreed to split royalties for their song 'Fight Test' with Stevens after it was deemed to be similar to his 1970 hit 'Father And Son'.

Already getting some comments... here we go again!!

*sigh*

Indeed.... here we go again!

no resemblance imo.

btw don't should be Yusuf Islam who should accuse of plagiarism since that's his new name, or he has changed his name legaly and keeps his older name for his works?

Yusuf has a new album out today released under his name of Yusuf (with a sticker on the front saying Yusuf formally known as cat Stevens), he got it legally changed a few years ago from Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam.

Which brings me nicely onto the topic of his new album, it's pretty good.

Know anyone who had a new CD released in the UK today? anybody fancy generating a bit of free publicity for their new album?

I agree with you Jen.

It's like band bashing, creates free publicity (which back fires when nobody mentions the new album )

How spooky, I was just reading this thread and the advert for the new album came on the TV! I'm not even going to listen to it to see if it's similar. As Jen said, free publicity!

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the negativity from this "free publicity" nets him less sales.

Cat Stevens, along with the rest of them, are a .... J O K E :joker: :laugh4:

.... 16 days & countinggggg  :smash: :drummer:  :guitarist:

:dance: :dance: C O L D P L A Y !!!!!!!!! :dance: :dance::escaping:

Ha ha, what is it about this song that attracts so much bullshit?!

I agree with you Jen.

I'm sure with Bob Dylan's new album he'll say "yeah, I'm really excited about my new album, I love every song on itcoldplaystolemymelody, and I just loved writing these songs and it's currently in stores now"

then when Green Days new album comes out they'll say "We LOVE our new album! It's got some great rock in it, and we had SO much fun in the studiocoldplaystoleourmelody! I can't wait for everyone to hear the new songs!"

It's just something bands do to promote their new album now. it's like putting a song on the radio or doing an interview or performing on American Idol. You do all that and you say 'Coldplay stole my song'. It's the new press tour!

It really sounds nothing like it....even if it did sound the same (which it doesn't), big deal? SO many songs use the same chord progressions. Look at this YouTube video, it's 30+ songs using the same chords.

That's amazing! And very cleverly put together. who'd have thought you could make such a good track out of a wide variety of genres.

I agree with you Jen.

which seems to be what's happened so far!

It does sound similar after 5:15.....Cat has a better case than JS.....IMO

I would imagine that Cat isn't as big a dickhead as Sadtriani is though

WHAT???

I've listened to VLV hundreds of times (or maybe thousands) and this song is NOTHNG like it, not even a tiny tiny part of it.

These kind of people make me really angry. :veryangry2:

I think the next Coldplaying.com poll should be 'Who will accuse Coldplay of stealing their song next?'

During the chord progression, there are two chords that are the same. It's not even three chords like "If I Could Fly"...this is the most pathetic claim yet. Do these idiots not know that YOU CANNOT OWN A CHORD PROGRESSION. If someone got sued every time there was a repeat chord, there's be about 11 songs in the world. I was just starting to like Cat Stevens, but now I'm thinking there is either something seriously wrong with his head, or he is just messing with us all.
