cat stevens is a genius... I love that man.. he so talented.. I'm a fan of his an a bigger fan of coldplay and it doesn't sound like vlv.... but they both are great

It is, noonsun, 'tis

It fortifies the "lacks originality" claim but at the same time enables Satriani's lawyers to go "LOOK! Someone ELSE says that they stole it too! Cat Stevens! Ha-hah!"

So it's sort of a double-edged sword in a way

Agreed. But I see Cat's claim as more of a slap in the face of Satriani, and all his shit followers! Besides, I really dont think that Cat Stevens is really being serious. He is not bothered with such shit, and is making a mockery of Satriani, by even mentioning it now, after all this time.

Edit: He says he'll wait to see how well Satriani does with the case. Haha, he MUST be joking!

:\ At least I hope so, because I like Cat Stevens.

yeah, i was thinking that he may be joking as well..he doesnt seem like that kind of person..

besides media always has its way of making anything into a negative thing..

so i wont really take this news seriously unless Cat himself does something about it like suing Coldplay like Satriani did..

Cat fight ... Coldplay wait to be picked out of a police lineup by Yusuf Islam.

Whereas Viva La Vida is bombastic arena-pop and If I Could Fly is noodly guitar soloing, Foreigner Suite is something even worse – an 18-minute folk-jazz opus. Though the strains at 5:20 are indeed reminiscent of Coldplay's song, they are short-lived – and take place over a vaguely Latin beat, played with, er, woodblocks.

Luckily for Coldplay, peace-minded Islam is not – for the moment – as litigious as Satriani. The singer-songwriter seems content to complain to the tabloids and hasn't announced any plans to take legal action. Islam even borrowed one of Coldplay's production team, mixer Michael H Brauer, to work on his new album. "[Michael] is brilliant," Islam said. "He won a Grammy for [Coldplay's] record."

On the other hand, it may just be a matter of time. Islam has a history of challenging infringements on his copyright, most recently against the Flaming Lips. After noting similarities between their 2003 song, Fight Test, and his 1970 hit Father and Son, the two parties agreed to a royalty split.

Then again, there is another lawsuit possibility: Islam could always sue Satriani.

:laugh3: That would be sweet, by implication then, Satriani is guilty!

Smells like a money case by him waiting to see how Satriani goes, to be honest.

Hell yeah :laugh3:

Honk If You Wrote Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" Too!

I would like to take the opportunity to claim that I wrote Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." In fact, I wrote "Viva La Vida" just about an hour ago after hearing the news that my pal Yusuf -- the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens -- feels that the undeniable Coldplay smash is too close for comfort to one section of his "Foreigner Suite" from his 1973 album "The Foreigner."

So to be honest here, I'm not exactly sure if I actually stole "Viva La Vida" from Coldplay, from Cat Stevens, from Joe Satriani or from some obscure band called the Creaky Boards who actually called their version of our collective hit "The Songs I Didn't Write."

But rather than waste any time haggling and trying to figure out who's actually right here, let me make a very modest proposal to keep get this peace train back on the rails. Why don't we all just split the royalties for "Viva La Vida" equally among the five of us? It's only fair, right?

Heck, because the stock market went up today, I'll sweeten the pot a little and declare right here in the Huffington Post that if Coldplay agrees to my plan by midnight Friday night, I will personally treat the entire extended "Viva La Vida" writing team to dinner at a participating Red Lobster to be mutually agreed upon -- assuming someone can spot me an advance on my royalties.

"Viva La Vida" indeed!

They most amazingly incredible thing that could possibly happen would be if Sadtriani lost the court case and then Stevens sued Sadtriani! :)

Then we'll have one big sueing merry-go-round with Coldplay sueing David Guetta & Kelly Rowland.

Then we'll have one big sueing merry-go-round with Coldplay sueing David Guetta & Kelly Rowland.

Nah, Coldplay wouldn't do that. They aren't a bunch cocks who police every song and whine "that's MY song!" and sue people.

this was on the local news here this morning, and i basically got incredibly pissed off.

and for some reason they played "speed of sound" instead of "vlv".

oh, action news. :laugh4:

But would this actually back up the bands claim that the Satriani song isn't original

Excellent point. :laugh3:

"Legal action depends on how well Satriani's case does"!?!?!?!?!? If that doesn't say 'I just want money!' than I don't what does! So if Satriani wins and only gets a little bit of money then he probably won't sue them. Your name isn't Yusuf Islam you fucking idiot, it's Cat Stevens!!!!!

It's amazing the lack of originality (a.k.a. plagiarism) in the people that are saying that Coldplay plagiarized their music. It's always with Viva La Vida!

Hi Everybody. It seems that someone else is interesting by coldplay's money, isn't he?

I read some user's opinion about this case & one seemed to me pertinent:

Why Cat Stevens doesn't sue Satriani first, as he wrote the song before coldplay?

Furthermore, he's waiting to see if Satriani win against Coldplay before suing them. That means he's waiting to see if there is some money to pick up...

What a shame... I'm not that surprised that we hear of those Artists only into that kind of situations and not because their new work that a lot of people love. And as others said, the frame has been used into so many songs. Everybody could sue someone as every situation of life has an influence on us and give us inspiration... It's a wrong fight to my opinion

I think Satriani should sue Cat Stevens for plagarizing his idea of claiming he wrote Viva La Vida! That truly does lack originality!

This is almost unbelievable,....

Money grubbing bastards.
