Luxury pad: Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, pictured running in London, have created a 33-room mansion

When Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin decided to create a 33-room superhouse by knocking through into the property next door, neighbours thought that must be the limit of their expansion plans. Yet before they have even moved in, the showbiz couple are at it again.

They have paid £435,000 to buy the flat on the other side of their original house, giving them a Monopoly-style hat-trick of properties in the North London street. And to the dismay of many in the area, they have applied to build a 10ft steel fence at the rear of the buildings 'for security concerns'.

'As neighbours, we have had years of their building works,' said one irate householder. 'Now the fence is just going to look ridiculous and we plan to object. They are turning a Victorian house into a fortress. 'They have taken down trees so they can park their flash cars in the driveway and are putting a huge swimming pool in the back garden. They said the trees were diseased but you can say anything when you have that amount of money. They are using their power and riches to get what they want.'

Actress Miss Paltrow, 36, and her 32-year-old husband, singer with the rock band Coldplay, have an estimated fortune of £45million. They bought the original house for £ 2.5million from Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes in 2004. They then paid £3.1million for the property next door and began work to knock through.

But even that wasn't enough for the couple, who have made a point of advocating their green credentials in recent years. It is believed that the flat will be used as staff quarters when they finally move in this year. Neighbours said they had not complained when work began on the properties because there were no radical plans to alter their appearance.

But the addition of the steel barrier, and the fact that they have had to put up with six months of building work, with scaffolding erected outside, has begun to irritate. Roswitha Gerlitz, who lives in the same street, said: 'I can understand it because they want their privacy but I think it's a bit unnecessary. If it's a big metal fence it could look quite hostile and awful. 'I don't think it's necessary. Their privacy is respected anyway.'

Camden Council said it had so far not received any official appeals against the couple's plans. They are currently in the U.S., where they have several properties, including one in the exclusive Hamptons area of New York. However, they view London as their main home and want their daughter Apple, five, and son Moses, three, to have a British education.

Madonna has done it and Jamie Oliver too. Now Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband Chris Martin have become the latest celebrities to spread out into the house next door.

After snapping up the property adjoining their London home, the couple are to create a £7million superhouse with 33 rooms.

Work began last week with builders putting up scaffolding and removing windows. Martin, 32, bought the couple's current home for £2.5million from Kate Winslet in 2004.

Knocking through: Scaffolding surrounds the house next door while work on the two-storey extension has also begun

The neighbouring property was sold to him by a barrister two years ago, for £3.1million.

Pictures submitted with a planning application show the couple's garden with a slide for daughter Apple, five, and son Moses, three.

Keeping it private: Gwyneth and husband Chris Martin are rarely pictured together but have been together for over six years

Plans show they intend to knock through the connecting walls to create eight rooms on the lower ground floor, six on the upper ground, five on the first floor and eight on the second floor. A two-storey extension at the side of the existing house includes a gym, changing room, three bedrooms and a bathroom.

The couple moved out of the house in May to spend time in America. They own several other homes, including one in the Hamptons, near New York, but see the London property as their base because they want the children to have a British education.

A neighbour said: 'It will be a massive house. What they have already is a substantial family home, but to double and add a bit on will make it a real mansion.

Gwyneth Paltrow: For her, this will be just one home among many

'No one objected as they are not going to change the outside appearance of the property and the extension is on their land and a few other houses in the street have similar add-ons.

'Mind you, I wouldn't want to have to pay the council tax on the new house - but I don't suppose that will concern this particular couple.'

Miss Paltrow, 36, married Martin in 2003 and they are said to be worth a combined £ 45million. The Devon-born son of an accountant and music teacher, Martin has seen his band Coldplay become one of the world's most successful groups.

In May the Daily Mail revealed that Jamie Oliver had bought the house adjoining his family home in London to create a £7.5million 19-room mansion.

Last year Madonna also paid £6million to acquire the next-door property. However, the plan hit a stumbling block after she failed to obtain planning permission to knock through the connecting walls.

What is council tax?

It's a tax used to pay for any local services such as policing, rubbish collection etc. Is based on the type of residence you own and where it's situated.

What are they going to do with all these extra rooms?

This is what I don't get about celebrities. Why do they build massive houses? Just because they can?

So C/J can spend all that time together like in Simon's story.

Gwyneth, covering her eyes: "I know nothing...."
