October 2, 200916 yr 17:53 Party time in Rio now! I'm sure they'll host a great Olympics, one of the best ever I'm sure. What a place to host the world's greatest sporting event. 17:49 It's all hush as the envelope has been handed to Rogge and he is now opening it the winner is....... Rio de Janeiro!!!! They become the first South American city EVER to host the Olympic Games and it will happen in 2016. Gut wrenching again for Madrid who ran yet again a great campaign but yet again are pipped to the post. 17:48 The formal ceremony is underway presented by some blonde girl and for no reason I can explain at all, Britain's very own Jonathan Edwards! Jacques Rogge the IOC President has been called to the podium now! Memories of 4 years back in Singapore when London won the rights to 2012 come rushing back! 16:33 We have a winner but we'll have to wait an hour for the result! My money's on Rio de Janeiro. 16:28 Tokyo as expected has been eliminated. No surprise there. The Olympics were only in Asia last year. But is there a shock result for Madrid here? Everybody is expecting Rio to be elected as the 2016 host city. 16: 24 The voting is already underway as to who will follow London and host the 2016 Olympics and SHOCK HORROR, Chicago have been eliminated! The Obama effect did not work at all. Big big upset there. Has the magic gone from Barack Obama?
October 2, 200916 yr Well the US has hosted like 20 Olympiads, I don't think they'd be too keen to give us another...
October 2, 200916 yr Madrid are a canny bunch. They were 1 vote from defeating France in the second round of voting 4 years ago and many believe that in a vote off with London in the final round of voting, Madrid would have won. So it'll be gutting for Madrid if they lose the vote which I suspect they will because if they HAVE lost this vote, then it wouldn't have been because their bid wasn't as good as Rio's, it would have been down to the fact that the 2012 games were in Europe, so in effect Madrid lost this 4 years ago.
October 2, 200916 yr Rio De Janeiro! It'll be a great setting. It's great that the Olympics have been hosted in very different cultures.
October 2, 200916 yr Congratulations RIO de Janeiro. I am glad that you won as the South American continent has never hosted the Olympic Games. :)
October 2, 200916 yr would've been cool for Chicago to get it, but it's great that it'll be in Rio for the first games hosted by South America.
October 2, 200916 yr Lol, they had huge billboards on the chicago interstate advertising the 2016 olympics. fail.
October 2, 200916 yr I'm thrilled for Rio! South America will finally get to show off its great culture and scenery.
October 2, 200916 yr Roll on 2012 first :) (1029 days to go) Well done to Rio :) Your first task is to make sure you design a better logo for 2016 ;)
October 2, 200916 yr I like the 2012 logo! Anyway, congrats to Rio, a lovely choice, I hope they produce a great games. Sorry to see Chicago go out so early, especially after such sentimental mind games from Madrid!
October 2, 200916 yr ^well London 2012 logo simply says 2012 in forms.... :uhoh: not that "bad" logo. (btw even after spending a week in London, i didn't knew about them organizing 2012 olympics :embarassed: )
October 2, 200916 yr ^well London 2012 logo simply says 2012 in forms.... :uhoh: not that "bad" logo. (btw even after spending a week in London, i didn't knew about them organizing 2012 olympics :embarassed: ) Yeah, we don't like to brag :P
October 2, 200916 yr I can't be arsed to read all your comments, but isn't Rio a fairly dangerous city? My neighbor grew up there and she says it was pretty bad. On a side note...world's greatest sporting event? GAFAW. World Cup > Olympics.
October 2, 200916 yr I preferred the original design: True, I loved that design - really classic-looking P.S World Cup over Olympics, Josh??? No way!
October 2, 200916 yr Roll on 2012 first :) (1029 days to go) Well done to Rio :) Your first task is to make sure you design a better logo for 2016 ;) Yes indeed! 1029 days to go to the opening ceremony which better be good. It has to go some to match Beijong. I know it won't because rather than world class choreographers and directors designing and planning the opening ceremony will get some school drama teacher bitch who thinks shes it with her grey hair and trashed clothes to make her look like a "hard worker" and with a pompous importance about herself! If that's going to be the case then you can feck off! I hope the opening ceremony is just a selection of great British humour. We could have thousands of adults dressed up as Basil Fawlty doing his goosestepping.
