Roadie #44 – Blog #1

August 30, 2010

#44 succumbs to the impatient

So even though you all are fully aware by now that the band has not been in the studio recently (not in its entirety, anyway), you still whine about the lack of reports from the lovely Roadie #42. What exactly is it that you would like him to report, I wonder? “Hello. I’m here to report that the band isn’t in the studio right now. Goodbye.” I don’t think so. And he has been ordered to take a break anyway.

I must say that I enjoy reviewing your analysis of 42’s previous blogs, how you read way too much into every detail, even insinuating that he hints at track titles with “quotations”, drool over the solar system bit, etc. So, with Roadie #42 on break, Roadie #43 on hiatus or M.I.A., I give you – ME. Roadie #44: the janitor of the Beehive. I’m not sure that I can come anywhere near the aforementioned in terms of storytelling, but I will try. Because you know, there’s ALL SORTS of juicy things going on when the band’s not here. Yeah.

Janitor, you ask? Well of course; the band needs someone to keep the Beehive relatively clean while they are away. The hours are great; it’s not your typical 9-to-5 job. Although there’s no music-making going on in the studio “at the moment”, and Roadie #42 was ordered to take a break, he does still occasionally pop in from time to time. He just can’t stay away! And I also occasionally see this tall, “lanky lad” bringing cigarettes to and from the Beehive. I haven’t asked his name, and he otherwise doesn’t look familiar. I’m just going to pretend that he’s Guy’s personal assistant.

Aside from the occasional Roadie #42 and lanky lad sightings, the only living things keeping me company whilst cleaning are all the plants. Those. Damned. Plants. I’m a janitor, not a horticulturist. Pruning the greenery is not in my job description. You know that lounge area that he mentioned in an earlier blog? The plants are even starting to take over that area, too.

Although at times it can be tempting to trim the greenery back a little, I have resisted. If they are being used as a sound dampener, it is probably best for me not to touch them, “no matter” how unruly they get. (I’m waiting for the one on the piano to reach the full length of the keys.)

In fact I’ve even considered adding to the collection; strategically placing a few “prank” plants, so to speak. Does anyone know where I can find some “Venus” fly traps? The plant and flower vendors down the road don’t appear to sell them. However, the only downside is that I won’t get to see their reaction when they first notice one hiding amidst the other plants. I can visualize it though… *The Venus fly trap chomps down and catches 42’s attention. What is this? Will steps over with his hands behind his back, leaning over ever-so-carefully to peer at the intruding plant. Guy simply says it looks strange. Jonny winces, and with a nervous chuckle proclaims he’s just happy that it’s not a sheep. All of the activity catches Chris’ attention, and he sprints over to the huddle. Almost instantaneously he is doubled over on the floor and can’t stop laughing. It takes nearly a full minute for him to recover from laughter, and finally utter an audible response. Apparently it reminds him of the Little Shop of Horrors movie.* Of course, there’s no way to know what their reaction would be; unless Chris is spotted wearing a vintage Little Shop of Horrors t-shirt for the next 9 months in every other paparazzi snapshot and interview. I suppose that wouldn’t be so bad, he needs to replace that crusty Back to the Future t-shirt anyway.

Each level of the Beehive must be kept clean, including the “depths” of the building where the important files are locked away whilst the band is away from the studio. There are quite a few computers down there. Of course, I would never try to “hack” into those computers to hear any of the work in progress. I wouldn’t want to risk my job as a janitor just to listen to new music from one of the biggest bands in the world, which probably less than 10 people have heard up to this point. My job is way too important to risk that. I wouldn’t turn the computers on, and I certainly wouldn’t try to enter passwords to access the music. I wouldn’t try to enter obvious passwords like names and birthdays. And I wouldn’t realize that there would probably be a much more difficult “strong” password with letters and numbers, and I wouldn’t try to enter something like ‘g00p_4_l1fe’ or ‘g00p_1s_lame’ (knowing the password choice would depend on someone’s mood on the day the password was created). Nope, I definitely would never try to access those computers. Never. Really.

Throughout the studio and the upper levels of the Beehive, in addition to the atrocious array of plants, instruments are scattered everywhere. There are plenty of the usual suspects: guitars, drums, a few pianos and keyboards of various sizes. But there are also lots of other unusual, unsuspecting instruments. I won’t go into too much detail, but I will tell you this: I’m “a little concerned” about the vuvuzelas. I’m really hoping they were just left here after the World Cup, and not actually being used for anything. Most of them are gathered near this window on the upper level.

I can already feel it; tomorrow there are going to be at least 6 fangirls pacing around the building trying to figure out which window this is. Ugh.

Although they took much care to lock up their digital files, I noticed that they didn’t remove the possible tracklists posted on the wall. Of course, there’s no way to tell which track titles refer to lyrics (like Yellow), and which appear to just be random or have an “implicit meaning” (like Parachutes). Maybe you all can help me out.

Well, this has been oodles of fun, but I really should get back to my janitorial duties. Since the end of August is fast approaching, my service in the Beehive will soon come to an end. So although this is my first blog, I suppose you can also consider this my last blog as well. Hopefully you will refrain from asking the Oracle (for the umpteenth time) when Roadie #42 plans to post his next blog.

Although what is the Rocky Horror Show reference? :inquisitive:

No my dear, not Rocky Horror Show... Little Shop of Horrors. :nice: Big scary man-eating plants.

#43 is impressed. Perhaps envious. #43 doesn't like being outshone. He may "accidentally" leave some rat droppings in the piano for the good ol' janitor to clean up. (Now to find a rat... :P)

I can already feel it; tomorrow there are going to be at least 6 fangirls pacing around the building trying to figure out which window this is. Ugh.

 Facepalm moment. :sweatdrop:

(Of course because the Rocky Horror Show is that comedy theatre production or something.)

*Goes and looks up Little Shop of horrors on youtube.*

Haha! That was absolutely brilliant! I love the photos, too, made me laugh! Fibonacci sequence FTW! The way that plant is creeping over the piano keys... :laugh4:

Excellent!
