Did you like 'Christmas Lights'?

Featured Replies

I didn't like it. I LOVED IT!!! It's so sweet and is true to Coldplay form.

It's a beautiful song. When I first heard it on the boat I immediately thought "old Coldplay" because of the piano and the prominence of Chris' vocals. Then I realised that the boat speakers muffled the strings, which are a beautiful addition, but do not detract from the piano or vocals.

In a way I love it because it's the best of 'old' and 'new' Coldplay combined, with the production done in a nice subtle way (I think some tracks on Viva La Vida were a little overproduced, Lost! being a good example - whereas I love Lost?)

^ They have the lyrics on the official website. Or do you mean discuss the lyrics?

I absolutely love the song. I might have emotional attachment to it since I heard it on the boat, though. That being said - I think it's a very atmospheral and beautiful Christmas song (I just love Christmas, it's the coziest time of the year, really :wacky:) This will certainly be on repeat for the next month.

When I first heard it, I didn't like it, but I didn't dislike it either. Maybe because it was 7:30 in the morning, or maybe because of the mixed opinions of other people flying around and affecting my preconceptions.

My iTunes was being a bitch from 6:30 onwards, so I couldn't download it. I was living off the YouTube video on Coldplay.com. Then I found out that the video had been taken down from the site, but I could still watch it cos it had already buffered and downloaded the whole thing. As far as I know, I was the only one in the world still able to watch the video on Coldplay.com. Then it was brought back so I wasn't so special any more :P

I eventually installed iTunes on the laptop, then downloaded the song and video through that and moved them over to my main computer and that iTunes. I threw the song on repeat and slowly came around to it. I think it's pretty good now, but I have my issues.

As previously mentioned, the "Tears we cried a flood" line sounds clumsy to me. As does the next line "Got all kinds of poison in, Of poison in my blood". And the line "Like some drunken Elvis singing" finally explains why there are three Elvises playing violins in the background...but I still don't really like that line either. In contrast, there are some fantastic lines in there as well.

Another day or two and I'll like the song even more, but I'm not sure if I'll ever love it as much as certain other Coldplay songs.

I don't want to dampen your euphoria. Finally we have a new song, it's a day to celebrate for us Coldplayers :).

Well, I'm listening to it for the fourth time now.

No question about it: the song is sweet and catchy and it will be fun to spend the Christmas Time listening to it. However, I don't think that the song in itself is a big progress when it comes to vocals and lyrics. The instrumentalization is good but Chris' vocals and the whole melody is as cheesy as you would expect it from a Christmas song. For this song it's ok but you could also recognised this developement on the Prospekt march EP and to some extent on Viva la Vida or X&Y.

Because of that ,as someone also said before, I have the fear that it will be that case on the new album too. I want songs that are rougher, songs you can only fall in love with it when you're listening to it over and over again because they are so complex in their sound patterns. This kind of songs have the power to stay in your heart for your whole life; eg. Politik, A rush of blood to head, Amsterdam, Clocks, A whisper, Spies, Trouble and so many others.

We know that Coldplay are able to create songs like this but the question is do they really want this anymore? They are producing more and more music for the masses but they may lose some of their real fans on their way to become the biggest band of the planet.

This is just a warning sign (also a gorgeous song :D) - I'm still full of hope for the new album.

On the boat when I first heard it gave me chills

I love this song, although it's still not my favourite coldplay song .. I'm trying not to over listen to it by having it on repeat

I looooooove it. I really do.

I have not listened to it.

So much love for it... It's unbelievable. It's the only thing I've listened to since it came out.

I love it!

But there might be a lot of reasons for it, and not only artistic reasons:

- it's the first new song in 2 years (I'm not counting Wedding Bells)

- I love Christmas Time and...maybe I wouldn't like this song so much if I didn't love Christmas. I agree, the song's a bit cheesy, but everything about Christmas is a bit cheesy, isn't it? ;)

I also think we can't have any judgment/prediction on LP5 based on Christmas Lights. 2 different things.

I love the sing-a-long, Walkmen-esque second half, although the beginning is a bit underwhelming. I can appreciate that they tried to craft a traditional-sounding holiday piece, although there's something to be said for bringing something new to a genre.

Overall, it's pleasant enough for what it is, but the song has no bearing whatsoever on my expectations for the new album, as I have no reason to believe this is indicative of LP5's sound and/or lyrics.

At first I didn't know what to think of it, but now with all the excitment (specially my fiancé's excitment for it) I saw the video and listen to it a few times and I can say I find it beautiful and well written song.

So, I love it! :)

I really like it. :wacky:

Can't put it on my iPod yet, but I know it's gonna be on repeat soon. :uhoh:

i genuinely love it, allthough i scored it a 9 for the simple reason i dont like how 'when your still waiting for the snow the snow to fall' is repeated consequtivly, surely chris could have thought of an awesome extra line

but that me bitching its fantastic!

I originally rated it as a 7 last week, but I think it's risen to a 7.5ish now :D

The first time I heard it I really, really did like it, I'm not trying to say I didn't, but I was concerned about how predictable it was, how it was almost stiflingly Coldplay. But in the end, it's a holiday song, not a new single for a new album, so I think it doesn't matter about them coming out with something more progressive or new-sounding right now. But when I teared up on the boat, it was more because I couldn't comprehend the amazing privilege of hearing a Coldplay song exclusively before its release and being asked to be in the video than it was because I was really struck by the song.

The more I listen to it, the more I love it, though. I think it's brilliant, and I love the return to the more personal, less abstract lyrical style, and the subtle yet not overpowering strings, and the fact that it's ever so slightly Christmassy but not in a cliche way with sleigh bells and the like.

I like it :) feel warm, and the colourful piano is nice

the lantern and fireworks make me think of our traditional Spring Festival XDDD

I'm a fan of the Killlers but I didn't like their Chrismas single at all.

Well if you think about it, "Killers" and Christmas aren't really compatible, are they?:P

Coldplay, on the other hand........................................

By the way, was "Chrismas" a Freudian slip on your part, or was it intentional?:P

Incidentally, my mum said she likes it!:D

It's the first decent Christmas song I've heard in years.

After all that trash we've had to put up with from the likes of Ricky Tomlinson and The Darkness (who?) in recent years, it's a real breath of fresh air!

And as I'm actually part of it, I had to score it a ten, of course.

I love the song!I would give it an 8.I love Wedding Bells and I dont know if I like the way the two lines are used in Christmas Lights. Maybe because im just use to hearing them in Wedding Bells. But I love the song and you can tell how much they have progressed with their song structures!!

THIS.

Couldn't agree more with everything you wrote!

Thanks for expressing what I'm not capable of expressing with my not-so-fluent English level! ;)

Edit: mistake!

You think the song was a "mistake"?
