What an amazing crowd, concert, performance. I almost wish I had dished out the $600 to fly out and attend, but after watching it on youtube, it had the same emotional impact minus the traffic jam and sore feet. =)

 

For shnits and giggles and since this was my 3rd live streamed concert that I've watched, I took my laptop to my piano and played along with the concert from Life is For Living on. I will say, It's kind of cool to be playing along with Chris live and if you've got the chops (I'd like to think I do) and have all the songs memorized then it's quite a bit of fun.

 

Pretty epic Friday night for not leaving the house.

Dang wasn't able to catch it. What was the setlist? Anyone have any idea if they'll re-show it on youtube? Hope so.

Coldplay Lollapalooza Festival review by Coldplero

 

Here's my progressive review version of Coldplay performance '|×`@´×| Lollapalooza 2011 - 08/05/2011

I watched it livestream on the Lollapalooza youtube channel.

The presentation at Lollapalooza was tremendous! From the very beggining of the streaming, where you could see the roadies and stage crew testing the lights and Fx's, you could guess that it was all set and ready for the boys to be able and feel like rocking all their souls on stage and give all their best to the festival crowd, in name of music and show quality. Not only because the stage was full of stuff, but also because I could see the excitement of the crowd waiting for them to come on stage and going crazy with them on each song! After hearing Back To The Future theme intro, MX started to sound allright and loudy enough for you to wake up your ears and get them ready to became a part of each note and each sigh of the band and crowd.

1) Straight forward, Hurts Like Heaven was next and it sounded allright. Analising it musically, I think this version didn't beat the "Rock Werchter" or "Main Square" versions because of the sound mixing. On the other hand, this version featured a few changes on scene, like having the fuzzy man appearing in opposite directions. On this song, I'll highlight Chris Martin on the piano because it really sounded marvelous and loudy! :)

2)Yellow came after Hurts Like Heaven, and generally speaking it was a mellow version, I really liked it, different from all the rests, with new Jonny Ufoistic guitar sound riffs that are really making all the songs amazing! They released small balloons, the party ones, hundreds of them without confetti because of the Chicago Tribune decition to bann confetti from Coldplay show because of the "mess" it causes... They really knew how to deal with that decition in a decent way! I've to add that Chris acoustic guitar had wires issues on the 2nd part and he had to throw the guitar away, laugh with Jonny about it and continue with the singing... The guitar roadie quickly came onto stage to pick the guitar up and try to fix the problem but that was not possible and 3)Yellow ended with no acoustic guitar from Chris and 3) In My Place began with a 'little' sound mixing problem (no backing track) and wire related issue of Jonny Boy guitar in the beggining... Will was on top shape, hectic and going wild on the drums of In My Place... maybe the reason of his little mistake on a missing kick. All these problems and mistakes occurring in so little song and performance TiMe really got me worried for them having to start the song again or stop until they fixed up the issue like in the Main Square show. Thankfully, the song progressed normally and Jonny's new guitar riffs just calmed me down and let me enjoy the song again without any nerves for them! Gosh these boys never stop surprising me with their versions...

4) Mm (aka Major Minus) started and the version was really well performed with no more sound problems! Also the crowd participation on this song was outstanding, there was a moment where you could only see hands joining together instead of little heads :D -On this song I'll highlight the sound mixing and the new Chris Martin dances :P

5) Lost! packed up the Chicago Lollapalooza Park with coloured balloons over the crowd so you could not see the band performing at all! Gosh, that set was stunning--

6) The Scientists followed Lost! and all I have to say about this version is that I noticed a progression from Chris voice entonation at some part... if you watch it I'm sure you'll realise he's making a great singing variation to it :)

7) Shiver followed up The Scientists and it was a great version... Not sure what to highlight because it was a regular festival live version for me (with no mistakes or problems!)

A long and dark december 8) (bka "Violet Hill") started right after Shiver, it seemed Chris was in a hurry that he didn't begin with "It was a ..." and that he forgot the lyrics on 2 verses and that he made a mistake in the ending chords of the song on his acoustic guitar and that he laughed at it and everything was fine :)

It was a nice version, as well as 9) God Put A Smile Upon Your Face. Well, to be honest on GPASUYF I noticed a few problems I have to remark... there was a problem with Jonny's guitar or Chris guitar, pedals or sound mix table because they performed a creative improvised part on it which they don't use to do on this version... Anyway these are the things that make all their songs unique and amazing when performed live!

10) Everything's Not Lost was mellow like Yellow, maybe because of Chris hard sweating! lol

11) Us Agains The World was not the best version ever, Chris voice was not at its best... I know he can sing it better with a better energy and etonation, but anyway it was not that bad. It's still worth having on my ipod :P I'll highlight the rich looping notes in the end of the song, which led to 12) Politik, where the crowd really enjoyed and seemed very enthusiastic about it, clapping along to the chorus like helping Chris not to lose the time mark! I just have to add on this song that the piano doesn't sound at all! That's a pity because I think it's the main instrument after the drums that make the song Politik a Coldplay anthem... but well still an interesting version

13) Viva La Vida was great but I'd prefer to hear new stuff, I still prefer the "Viva La Vida" version from the Viva La Vida World Tour era... 14) Charlie Brown was magnificient, featuring the NEW WILL CHAMPION UFOistic BACKING VOCALS FOR THE SONG! INSANE version, except for the bass that WAS MISSING! YES! Guy Berryman's instrument was unplugged and was barely heard in the end... what a pity because if it wasn't for that I'd have put this version directly on the album. The visuals were stunning and lasers projected green ufos all the way on the trees in front of stage. Really cool performance of Charlie Brown :D

15) Life is For Living... great version, still with almost no bass sound :(

On the encore the band roadies quickly rushing onto stage to check if the instruments were sounding as they should be sounding, beating the Festival Guiness record for fixing everything in less than 1 minute, getting it all ready for the band to do their thing on 16) Clocks, with the bass sound fixed. After it, Chris made a new tribute version to Amy "Rehab" and went on to 17) Fix You with it's fireworks saved up for 18) Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.

I'd rate this concert 8.5/10. I know the boys gave their best tonight and that the set up was extraordinary... but I still missed the crazyness and energy Chris have us (or at least me) used to hear on his singing... something like he did on Splendour In The Grass show, plus there were lots of unexpected problems I believe than on Main Square Festival show, which was really a cause of concern for most of the crowd!

Definately a set to have on your iPod! Another Coldplay performance that demonstrates that sounding insane and getting better each time they perform is part of Coldplay virtuosism! Keep up the great work Coldplay and it's team!

And to be quite honest, this was one of my least favorite shows on the tour. I think that Rock Am Ring is still my favorite, Rock Werchter in close second.

I'm sure all this "free" time they have to "monkey around" will be used to work on new roadie blogs, new info, surprises... who knows?

What a difference a day makes. 48 hours ago I was in LA watching what seemed like a different band. Tonight the crowd was amazing, Chris was amped up, Jonny was on fire, and Guy was actually smiling?!? ......

Just got back to my hotel in chicago. This was my 9th Coldplay show and the most amazing one I have ever seen!i waited at the stage all day to see them(along with alot of other coldplayers, so glad I got to meet alot of you!) The boys were on fire tonight and so happy, the crowd was fantastic. Will post pics and video when I get home next week can't believe I witnessed this amazing show!!!

Awesome gig. The crowd was probably the most lively I've seen thus far on their festival run. And the guys gave all that energy and love right back.

For some reason, I thought I was two hours ahead, not behind. Needless to say, I was very confused to see the Vaccines instead of Coldplay. :lol:

So I didn't get to meet any coldplayers :(

But the show was AMAZING!! :dance:

Lollapalooza 2011, Friday: Coldplay

 

I forget that Coldplay is a band. Not that it exists, but that it is a collective of four flesh-and-blood musicians banging on instruments. Instruments that can be loud. Because it's easy to think of Coldplay as Chris Martin and some other dudes. He dates the famous actress, and the quartet's hits tend to be the ballads with Martin hunched over a piano. The production of Coldplay's four albums is clean, wine-party friendly and bloodless.

 

Before the Brits took the stage, three large, square LED screens displayed a circle intersected with an X. For all the shots taken at the band for being treacly pap for white people, the icons might as well have been targets.

 

But then the Brits took the stage. Multicolored lasers shot over the crowd. Fireworks erupted in sparkling white columns, as high as the skyscrapers towering behind the park. Those LED screens shimmered with more color, then displayed a silhoutte of a running man made of rainbows. At the climax of this opening tune, the rainbow man flies like superman.

 

It was a new tune, "Hurts Like Heaven." Despite that, wIth all the razzle dazzle pyrotechnics and the shocking, inescapably awesome volume of the band, the audience leapt and cheered. Two of the first four songs were new, from an upcoming record. Other to-be-released cuts, lit like Christmas trees and pulsing with more keyboards and dancefloor savvy, came throughout the set. And I've never seen a band's unheard material go over so well. Martin helped a bit, cheerleading the crowd along, prompting them to jump. And they all jumped.

 

But this likely wouldn't happen if not for Will Champion. The drummer is vital to the band. And I don't know that I've ever paid attention to his work on the albums. Or if I'm even supposed to. Yet he beats the shit out of his kit onstage. He's a muscular, bearded, Bonham lover. No, seriously. I'm talking about the guy from Coldplay. He drummed harder than anyone I saw all day, and that includes an art metal band.

 

He also sings. Dueting with Martin on "Us Against the World," another newbie introduced facetiously as being about a love affair between Bill O'Reilly and Sarah Palin. Maybe it was his bald head, maybe it was the hammy superimposed faces on the big video screens, but seeing Champion belt choruses into a microphone, I couldn't help but think that if Martin ever dumped the other three to go solo, a la Peter Gabriel, they've got a Phil Collins in back ready to step up.

 

I forgot how melodically sophisticated the early work is. "Shiver," which Martin pointed out as being the fisrt song Coldplay ever played in America, zigs and zags and swings and soars. "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face," started with a stripped rearrangement, actually whipped up a beautiful squall over some gorilla percussion. Coldplay can be a great rock band. Jonny Buckland's guitar sounds like a snarling electric guitar, not a toy Japanese keyboard, as it does coming through the filter of Brian Eno.

 

But then all those piano ballads sound like church hymns. Or, I should say, like the same church hymn over and over.

 

Chalk that up to Martin's self-help lyrics. Listing to a big batch of his writing, its struck me as Christian rock with a big dollop of doubt. The sky, choirs, cathedrals. Two songs go on about not being lost. I just wish the band weren't so repetitive. And obvious. When they play "Yellow" all the lights turn yellow. As dramatically rocking as the material can be, Martin's dweeby, common-denomenator earnestness makes it all feel too scripted. Their instruments look like movie props, covered in faux finishing and neon graffiti. The acoustic guitar looks like a blackboard, and like a hired artist spent three days decorating it.

 

There were silly rumors circulating earlier backstage that Jay Z would appear. Only his "99 Problems" made an appearance, introducing the band before a bit of John Williams pomp. Instead of surprise guests, Coldplay offered a version of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab." Sorry, everyone else, you were beaten to the punch, rather wonderfully. Next to Foster the People's Neil Young cover, an unlikely highlight of the day.

 

An honest to god lighter was held aloft at one point. Typically nowadays you just see the azure glow of iPhone screens at the end of all those pale arms. It was a hearwarming reminder of rock's classic era. And it made me overlook the band's bright new Ghostbusters uniforms and postmillennial pastiches. For a moment I was swept up in the hallelujahs. For a moment I considered Coldplay a classic.

Just got back. Best concert ever! Way better than the last time I saw them in 2009. Hearing the new stuff live makes our petty recordings sound horrible!

Watching bits of the recorded livestream I found entirely on Youtube. They really seemed in great form. But when I look at the crowd, I feel sorry for some people who record the entire show. Why don't they just enjoy it? Not just here though, I see that everywhere.

 

Also, big :lol: at the Sarah Palin joke in the introduction of Us Against the World. Who was that guy he was talking about then?
