^Welcome to the Board! :)

There are a couple of others here who were at Lollapalooza, too. I just streamed it online, but if this show's as good as that one was, I'll be in heaven. :wacky:

So excited about the prospect of hearing Paradise live.

Speaking of, what do you guys think of the snippet that's surfaced? I've only listened to it once, and I'm not going to again until it comes out Monday. But, I'm intrigued!

I LOVE the Paradise snippet. I so can't wait for Friday! Not holding on to much hope for Thursday though :( Oh well...

We are staying until Sunday, but are only going to ACL Fest on Friday, so have all day Saturday to do some recovering and sightseeing. A mini-vacation without the kids ;) I've never been to Austin, my husband has a couple of times.

You'll have a great time, Dianne! Any non-kid vacation is automatically a win! ;)

Do you guys have any particular plans for the rest of the weekend?

Nothing else in particular. We may get together for dinner Saturday night with a work-type guy my husband knows. We leave Sunday at 1pm, my husband has to go on to a business meeting in North Carolina and I'm flying home to CA. And Sunday is my birthday :) Anything you think we should see or do?

I'm glad for a get-away, but we will be missing our daughter's first soccer game of the season on Sunday :( Not that we haven't seen about 150 of her other games over the years, but still...

I've listened to the Paradise snippet about 30 times already lol and I love it, especially the beginning. I am so excited for Austin even though it's gonna be really hot lol.

Arranging the Music for Austin’s Influential Festival

Amy Corbin has been pursuing Stevie Wonder for years. He’s been on a shortlist, alongside Bruce Springsteen and Radiohead, of acts Ms. Corbin has long hoped would agree to headline the Austin City Limits Music Festival. This year she got her man. Mr. Wonder, Coldplay and Arcade Fire are among the 130 acts that will draw 75,000 people each day next weekend to Zilker Park in Austin for the three-day festival’s 10th anniversary.

As the festival’s senior promoter, Ms. Corbin spends seven months, starting in October, handpicking, negotiating for and, ultimately, booking the headliners and the rest of the bill. It’s a dream gig for anybody who spent a semester in college booking the student union, but it can also be stressful.

“Most of the year, every phone call is like asking somebody out on a date,” said Ms. Corbin, 32, who has been with C3 Presents, an Austin-based concert promotion and event company, since its inception. “For a lot of that time, there’s definitely a fear of rejection. Every time you have to call somebody back, I’m thinking, ‘Oh boy, it could be a yes or no.’ ”

These days, plenty of national acts say yes to Ms. Corbin, who helped build the festival from a 2-day, 60-act event booked with three weeks’ notice in 2002 to a regular stop for top-tier, stadium-level bands like Pearl Jam, the Dave Matthews Band and the Eagles. The festival’s clout also propels younger acts like the Kings of Leon and Ray LaMontagne to stardom by exposing them to huge crowds early in their careers. As a result, within the concert industry, Austin City Limits has become widely regarded as one of the Big Four music festivals — along with Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza (which is also booked and produced by C3 Presents).

Ms. Corbin and C3 Presents’ principal partners — Charles Attal, Charlie Jones and Charlie Walker — admit that what originally got the festival off the ground was primarily its 2002 licensing agreement to secure the “Austin City Limits” naming rights from Austin’s PBS affiliate, KLRU, home to the country’s longest-running music television show. And while the festival now includes splashes of dance music and hip-hop (Kanye West headlines this year), Ms. Corbin has been careful to book largely within the confines of the television show’s diverse, but well-defined, aesthetic — a mix of rock, country, soul, gospel, Americana and singer-songwriters.

“In the best of ways, it’s the most mainstream festival out there,” said Michael McDonald, a New York-based manager whose client roster includes Mr. LaMontagne, John Mayer and Sarah McLachlan. “They book with both the history and credibility of the television show in mind and the musical breadth that Austin is known for.”

Given A.C.L.’s ascent, Ms. Corbin said she now spends less time convincing bands and their representatives that the festival is worth playing. (This year, managers and booking agents representing national acts passed along at least 1,500 submissions for only 130 spots.) Instead, her focus is on finding the right combination of artists who will make festivalgoers feel that they got their money’s worth. Unlike the case at most festivals, most of the three-day passes for A.C.L. traditionally sell out before the lineup is announced, which means fans are putting blind faith in Ms. Corbin’s judgment.

“The fact that we almost sell out the festival without a lineup puts a tremendous amount of pressure on us year after year to deliver,” Ms. Corbin said. “Obviously, the first year they perceive us to have failed them, it’s the next year that doesn’t sell out.”

Although conventional wisdom suggests that most ticket buyers are interested only in the bands occupying the headlining slots, Ms. Corbin said she pays as much, if not more, attention to building ticket value by also stacking talent into the middle of the lineup. This year’s late-afternoon to early-evening slots feature legends like Mavis Staples and Randy Newman, along with three of the hottest young bands of 2011 — Foster the People, Young the Giant, and Fitz and the Tantrums.

“She’s become particularly great at knowing a year ahead of time what’s going to be the next year’s buzz band,” said Jackie Nalpant, a booking agent at Paradigm, a talent agency whose acts on this year’s lineup include Mr. Newman, the Cold War Kids and Delta Spirit. “She has great instincts for what will work.”

Ms. Nalpant knows the value of landing an act on the lineup. Last year, Gayngs had to cancel its festival appearance after its bus driver left the band in Austin and took its equipment to Tennessee following an argument over rental fees. In a lawsuit against the bus company, a Tennessee jury found in the band’s favor and awarded $270,700 plus interest.

“All the other buyers for the other festivals are in Austin, and knocking one out of the park there has a trickle-down effect,” Ms. Nalpant said. “The lawsuit was based on not getting to play A.C.L., and the jury attached significant monetary value to that loss.”

With the festival so close, Ms. Corbin said last-minute cancellations were her only stress factor, although this year’s unusually strong and long Texas heat wave also concerns her. “All you can do is cross your fingers, hope for another great festival and immediately start thinking about next year,” she said.

I won the tickets to the Thursday night recording of the tv show. I am coming from Iowa but I can't find anyone else to come with me on such short notice so I have an extra ticket. I see people saying you can't transfer them. Should I contact the show to let them know I will only use one ticket? I hate for it to be wasted.

Guys!!!

I JUST found out about this contest another local radio station is doing. It's to attend the MX listening party, too!! Here's the link with the info.

But be quick!! The deadline is 11:59 pm CT, about 2 hours from now.

Good luck!

PS. I don't know if you have to be in the Austin area to win... I couldn't find any info on that.

^^ Thank you! I am trying to find the etiaw video on their website to enter but don't see it :(

EDIT: Found it! Thank you Jen :)

^you're welcome! But if you win, you've got to take me! :P

LOL I doubt i'd win :( I so don't have luck with stuff like this lol. Hey... do you think the balcony tickets for ACL taping will be announced tomorrow?! I realllyyyy hope all of us get tickets to it, wishful thinking :0

  • Author

yeah, I think they'll be announced tomorrow. I think the deadline to enter was 9 am.

I would almost rather have tickets to the taping than the listening party. But, knowing my odds aren't great has made me more resolved to be on the barrier Friday night!

btw, Paradise has leaked! I accidentally listened to it! :( but I like it! :)

Both would be awesome... but I really wanna go to the taping since it's such a small venue! Crossing my fingers for both of us! I will definitely be at the barrier all day, it says the high will be 97 degrees Friday, ahhh.. could be hotter though :0

I saw it had leaked but I am not gonna listen to it until it gets premiered in a few hours. I get it at 11:50 PM my time, so I will listen then :) I already know I am gonna love it based on the 30 second preview.

I've been meaning to post in here the past few weeks but Hurricane Irene threw a wrench into my plans & no matter where I traveled in VA/NC, internet and cell service remains spotty. Like many of you, I'm going for the taping tickets, and I plan to be there early Friday to camp out, most likely alone because no one in my group is insanely crazy like I am apparently!

Dianne, I believe you met up with Jason DeBord at the UCLA show, right? I won a pair of Samsung tickets but ended up not going (obviously) due to flight/scheduling issues, and after hearing about it, I'm so happy it didn't work out in the end! Due to another set of flight (more like weather) issues, I also missed out on meeting up with Jason & several others for the Liverpool/Newcastle shows. Anyway, thought I'd "introduce" myself -- I'm Amanda.

Hi Amanda! Let's hope more flight issues don't stop you from coming to this show! Yes, Tracey (MartinFan) and I did meet up with Jason and Julie (jbarry) , as well as Kelly (kspillers), at UCLA, and we met a few others. It was great to meet Jason and Julie and to see Kelly again (she and I were stuck in Tampa for the day 2 years ago when that show was cancelled). Tracey and I had a nice late night dinner with Jason and Julie after the show, too. Jason reminded us of your sad story with the Liverpool/Newcastle shows and the horrible weather - that must have been just so awful to have missed those shows. There are a few of us, jenflor (who lives in Austin), and l0wxo2 (who is coming from Las Vegas) who are planning on getting there early and "camping" out at the barrier for the day. PM me your cell number so we can all meet up. We are all crossing our fingers for the tv show taping, too. My husband and I are flying in Thursday afternoon, and I think if none of us get tickets for the taping, we are going to try to meet up that night anyway.

I hope you made it through Irene ok. My son just started college in New Orleans at Tulane and had his first taste of that kind of weather with Tropical Storm Lee last week - it was a big deal for a Southern California boy to see that much rain!

Looking forward to meeting everyone! I can't believe it's in just a few days.
