[16-Sept-2011] Coldplay @ Austin City Limits Festival, Zilker Park, Austin, Texas

Hypothetical question. Our plane lands at 4:30. According to that email adminwhatever posted, it said to get to the theater at 6. Would we have time to get a cab to our hotel, Hyatt Regency, to drop off our bags and get to the theater by 6? I don't know Austin at all, how far away things are or how bad traffic is. It might be worth it, even if we don't get tickets, to see if there are no-shows.

Hi Dianne - Austin traffic is notoriously bad, especially during that time of day around the airport. I would be really surprised if you could get your bags, get a cab, go to the hotel and get back to the venue by 6. You could pray to the CP gods to have favor on you for good measure, but I would think that time frame would really be pushing it. Since it's "hypothetical", any chance you could get an earlier flight??;)

Here's our flight info...we're flying from Southern California.

Cont. Flt. 1478 from SNA at 8:40a to IAH at1:46p

Cont. Flt. 0035 from IAH at 3:30p to AUS at 4:21p

Unless there is another flight that would minimize our time in Houston, I think we're stuck with these times. We'll have 2 carry-ons - I'd prefer one, but my husband has fly to North Carolina for business from Austin Sunday morning. Maybe we'll just come from the airport and hope they can hold our bags at the venue. :)

If you just have carry-ons and your cabbie takes Riverside Drive, it's doable. Tight, but doable.

edit: your Hotel is just a walk across the bridge from the venue so I think it should be totally doable. Depending on crowd waiting to check in, you may have to just drop off your bags and fully check in after.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!! Good luck - at least weather shouldn't be a problem for either flight considering our massive lack of rain.

Angie, I LOVE your avatar.

Guess we'll just wait and see what happens. And doable in what way? Going to the hotel to drop off bags or coming right to the venue?

edit: Just saw your edit. :) Thanks so much for the info. Crossing fingers that we'll get tickets!

I would guess 1 hour from Airport to hotel at the most. walk to venue is about 10 minutes. Make sure you tell the driver to take Riverside. Riverside will take them right up to your hotel and walk from there.

Ok, so I tweeted @acltv to see if the names have been drawn yet, I am getting very impatient :rolleyes2:

Confirmed: Drawing for Coldplay has not been done yet!

Those Paradise threads make me sad.  Ok, so some people don't like it...fine...but good god, the way they're going on and on and on about it is just sickening.  Personally, I like it.

Does anyone know if they overbook for these shows or is there an exact number of tickets?  I hope they let us know soon.  I don't like being patient.

Answer to your question:

Yes, they always overbook these things. Similarly to the Pops concert on BBC, having a ticket/reservation doesn't guarantee you a spot b/c they do cut off at fire code capacity.

As for this next part, I have to be rather cryptic for the moment b/c I really don't want to anger this person... I personally find it very hard to believe that people are as angry over Coldplay playing the show/festival as they'd like you to believe because every big donor past, present or currently courting, television/media execs, celeb in town wants

to be there. While we'd die over the stage area, standing room only tickets, the far more primo seats (view wise) are actually Mezzanine/Balcony.

Who's more likely to show up ready to see Coldplay? Fan or Funds? You have a 50/50 chance of guessing right but better plan both in some instances.  Whereas fans just sign up for the lottery with an unwavering "Yes! I'm absolutely going if I win!" the individuals falling into the funds/celebs categories may or may not have RSVP'd.  They may or may not have additional, also equally important people with them and then what do you do? Who do you turn away? The person who got free tickets to see a

musical performance that while yes, is "paid for by public funding" in reality, is REALLY

paid for through generous donations from corporations, grants and/or individuals.

While we're at it, let's tack on the added heartburn of people signing up for tickets with no intention whatsoever of coming, more or less even setting foot in the state of Texas. Not to mention the SOB ticket scalpers out there trying to profit from FREE tickets. These 1-2 people/companies selling on eBay & Craig's list are first directly stealing $1000 immediately from a 5013© non profit, aka ACL/ PBS, (Coldplay will be paid scale, as with any other band, great or small); but the scalpers will get them once more in the back end by taking away precious seating.

I can only imagine whats going on behind the scenes right now. I know I'm going to be in the minority here but I'm empathetic towards their situation. Then again, I'm a fundraiser so there you go!

Well, I wrote far more than I planned.  Need to give my index finger & thumb a rest. If I hear anything else, I'll post ASAP. Lauren, Diane, et al, I'll PM later w/ my details.

^Hi, Amanda, I'm Jen :nice:

I know they always hold a good chunk of passes back, and they're given out to various corps, etc. The company my friend works for has a partnership with Coca-Cola and her office was given 15 passes for employees.

I know when I've gone to see tv show tapings (most recently, American Idol and Dancing with the Stars) in LA/Hollywood, they have some VIP tickets reserved, but very often, those VIPs don't show up, so those tickets go to those in the "standby" line. We had tickets to the American Idol Finale this year, but due to more people showing up than anticipated, they had to cut the line off 20 people in front of us (and we were there FIVE hours early!) :( But we are guaranteed seats at next year's Finale. Right now, I have standy-by tickets for the Ellen Show on Sept 21. Again, we will go there, wait in line, hope to get in if ticketholders or VIPs don't arrive in time, but if we don't get in, we'll go to the Riff-raff room but be given guaranteed tickets to another show, so we won't have to wait in line again. It's all how the game works... I can only imagine with PBS and their big corporate sponsors, they have to hold tickets for them, just in case...

OH MY GOSH!!! I JUST GOT TICKETS!!!!!!! I'm so freaking excited now!!! Check your emails!!!!!

Oops...I just got them for Arcade Fire for Saturday night. Duh...

But still, i"m excited to see them too...

^

Congrats on getting Arcade Fire tix! I'd love to be able to see that taping too.

Congrats, Dianne!

Arcade Fire will be incredible!

This from twitter:

.@acltv ticket winners for @HeadandtheHeart @ArcadeFire @GomeztheBand have all been announced. Still to come are @Coldplay & Randy Newman.

Does anyone know if they overbook for these shows or is there an exact number of tickets? I hope they let us know soon. I don't like being patient.

YES! They do overbook. It says on the site that possessing a ticket does not guarantee admission to the taping.

Which brings me to your other question about Austin traffic. You'd be REALLY pushing it, like others have said, to get there for 6pm. Since the tickets are overbooked, you'd want to get there as early as you could. But like anything, it's a crap shoot. Sometimes traffic might not be bad, but one incident and it'll back up quick. Also, there is no guarantee your flights would all be on time either. I guess as a plan B you could always try renting a car from Houston and driving to Austin. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive, but of course then you still might have the same scenario as you'd get in about the same time and possibly other traffic problems to contend with due to all the wildfires or other incidents :(

Best of luck though!

Congrats on the Arcade Fire tickets Dianne, that's awesome.

I'm assuming the winners for Coldplay have been notified... see a few twitter posts that people won some. No email for me :( Did anyone get an email?

EDIT: Confirmed... Winners have been notified. I am so so bummed... I knew it was a long shot at getting tickets but it still sucks :(

Me, too...now we HAVE to be in the front on Friday. My husband's not too excited, but he'll do it for me :) You, me, Jen and Amanda, was there anyone else? There's a Jennifer on the list, but I don't know if it's Jen or not.

^ My best friend Jessica will also be there with me, she goes to every Coldplay show with me :) I just hope the crowd isn't as bad as the Lollapalooza crowd, it was really scary at times with all the pushing, and that was for the bands that played before Coldplay!

^^that Jennifer's not me :(

Ohhhh, this sucks! But I'm with you, Dianne. Now 100% resolved to be in front.

Lauren, what was the line-up before Coldplay at Lolla?

We'll have my husband to push back the pushers ;) He's big, well, not big big, but 6'2". I'm tall, too, and I can stick out an elbow pretty well.

Young the Giant, Grace Potter, The Kills, and Bright Eyes. All excellent but it got super bad when the Kills came out.

I am very happy that all of us will be there together and we can finally all meet :)
