hmmm... i see what you're trying to say now, though i'm still not sure that's it. they're going to write a saying on names? :P

I may be wrong, but it could be not just fiscally writing, but spiritually writing, like if they could write this on the soul, do you know? like if they want to make sure that "Wont' Let Them Take Control" is on people's soul. That's why they write on names. Each person has a name, it would mean write on a name is writing on a person's soul. I don't know if Chris means this, but is a wonderful thought :D

Whoa. Deep thinking there, man :P

Hi All

I've been listening to the Glastonbury version again and again to try and solve a few more of these lyrical conundrums. I've also now heard the T in the Park version too which solved some of my other questions!

I think we are near a final version but to be honest this can never really be a final version until the studio version is released. Chris is known for chopping and changing lyrics to suit, to just keep it fresh or simply because he feels like singing something else (Fix You is a great example where the live lyrics are almost permanently different on one line when live) and the lyrics have definitely been fiddled with since the Rock am Ring show when I first heard it.

These lyrics are wholly based on the Glasto and T in the Park versions simply because there are excellent audio versions AND great HD video too... The first verse after the chorus is the tricky one we're all struggling on. At Glasto I'm certain he sings '...every surface are sayings' but at T in the Park it's clearly 'names'. Based on the clarity, I'm sticking with 'names'. He also adds the 'I' at the start of "See the arrow they shot...". It's not on the boards (see page 3) but makes more sense!

Finally, first verse after chorus, second line. This is a real tricky one. I would be more sold on "And at the streets are rising, we're writing the same" but I want to know what you all think first. Remember, this is purely on the Glasto performance but I did hear this in others (T in the Park especially). Have left as is for now just incase...

For now, I would be happy to say these are the lyrics, certainly for live versions...

Coldplay - Hurts Like Heaven

Lyrics from Glastonbury Festival 2011/T in the Park 2011

====================

Written in graffiti on a bridge in a park

'Do you ever get the feeling that you're missing the mark?'

It's so cold, it's so cold

It's so cold, it's so cold

Written up in marker on a factory sign

'I struggle with the feeling that my life isn't mine'

It's so cold, it's so cold

It's so cold, it's so cold

I see the arrow they shot, trying to tear us apart

Fire from my belly and the beat from my heart

Still I won't let go

Still I won't let go of you

Ooohooh

'Cause you do

Oh you, use your heart as a weapon

And it hurts like heaven

On every street, every car, every surface are names

And at the streets arise, we'll be writing the same

Don't let them take control

No we won't let them take control

Yes I feel a little bit nervous

Yes I feel nervous and I cannot relax

How come they're out to get us?

How come they're out when they don't know the facts

So on a concrete canvas under cover of dark

Concrete canvas I go making my mark

Armed with the spray can soul

I'll be armed with the spray can soul

You

Ooohooh

Oh you

Ooohooh

Because you use your heart as a weapon

And it hurts like heaven

Woho-ooh

Woho-oooh

It's true

When you use your heart as a weapon

And it hurts like heaven

Don't let them take control

No we won't let them take control

That's your only mistake. It's "we'll be writing to say: Don't let them take control..."

Hasn't been mentioned before but perfectly viable. Only problem is I can't hear this in t in the park or glasto version. Also, while not exactly rare for coldplay, you'd lose the rhyme...

Can anyone else hear this version?

In my video, I think he sings either "the same" or "saying":

what does he say in german at the end of the rock am ring performance anyone know?

"Wir sind so froh hier zu sein"

"We are amazed to be here"

In my video, I think he sings either "the same" or "saying":

Im pretty sure he doesnt say "Same" because i clearly cant hear a "m".

It must be something with "Say" or maybe even "Insane".

Ok, iTunes Festival made it so obvious! Chris sang it nice and clearly for this one and, despite variations in performances, I'd say we would have to go with this until the studio version appears...

I listened for that part very carefully and I really thought he sang "writing to say".

Based on the Rock Werchter video, I completed the lyrics posted by periahdark on page 7 of this thread as follows:

"On every street and every car and every surface are names,

And now the streets arise and we're writing the same."

It sounded like the same thing at the iTunes festival to me, except maybe without the extra "ands" in the first line. I think these lyrics are as conclusive as they're going to get until the official ones are posted.

Hurts Like Heaven (uncompleted)

Written in graffiti on a bridge in a park

'Do you ever get the feeling that you're missing the mark?'

It's so cold it's so cold

It's so cold it's so cold

Written up in marker on a factory sign

'I struggle with the feeling that my life isn't mine'

It's so cold it's so cold

It's so cold it's so cold

See the arrow that they shot, trying to tear us apart

Fire from my belly and the beat from my heart

Still I won't let go

Still I won't let go

Youuuuu

Uhhhhhh

you - (he did not finished that)

Oh you use your heart as a Weapon,

and it hurts like Heaven

Streets and Bars and a Pavement of Saints,

and at the Streets are rising and you'd rather sing,

don't let em take control,

No we wont let em take control

Yes, i feel a little bit nervous,

Yes i feel nervous and i cant relax,

i'm coming round to get us

i'm coming round when they don't know the facts,

so on concrete canvas and a glow in the dark,

concrete canvas, i'm a "making a mark",

armed with a spraycan (and) soul

i am down with the spraycan (and) soul

Youuu

Uhhhhh

oh Youuu

Uhhhhh

Yes you,

you use your Heart as a Weapon,

and it hurts like Heaven

woooh

woooh

Its true,

when you,

use your Heart as a Weapon,

it hurts like Heaven.

my favourite song <3

Here's my cover. It's not perfect, but the best I could do. Even now there are a few things I want to change after listening to a few different live recordings. Tell me what you think.
