Good music and timeliness are not incompatible ideas. I am not against taking your time; I am against wasting time. Somehow, I doubt they are putting in a 40 hour week. Once these artist "make it," they become lazy. I think they hide behind the excuse of not wanting to rush their art. It's nothing but an excuse to me. You mean to tell me you can't come up with 10 songs in over 3 years?

you can't write when you can't write and forcing it doesn't help. it has to be organic to get the best results. most artists don't work set hours every week. there is no shift pattern. you collate ideas when they come to you and then you work on it until you get it right. i think they've produced enough in the past to deserve the chance to take their time. imagine being a massive portishead fan.

  • Lol I haven't been here in 5 years but I decided to pop my head back in for some nostalgia. Seems like this was my last post so here's an update... I finally saw Radiohead live in Manchester in 2017 a

They don't spend their down time cultivating ideas. They spend their down time screwing around. Look at artist like Zeppelin or The Beatles. They were putting out albums practically every year. What, did inspiration just hit them faster? No, they just weren't as lazy. I see most of the Los Angeles based artist around town, and they spend 90% of their time goofing around.

I'm mixed about it all. Outside of the band they have lives, families, side projects, and other things going on.

At the same time I agree that it doesn't seem like they are putting in a full week. I mean they have been taking their time especially since there are no deadlines. The gap between HTTT and In Rainbows was almost 5 years which is insane. The band is known for being perfectionists, but there comes a point when enough is enough in trying to perfect a song.

Taking into consideration the time they spend recording, the songs they have played (Present Tense, Open the Floodgates, etc), and also songs from the list, not to mention songs we haven't even heard anything about it feels that they have enough songs for 3 albums. Of course whatever they release it's not going to be lengthy (they felt that HTTT was too long & it was 14 songs).

I guess what is most frustrating is the lack of information we are given. I mean for all we know they might have not even started recording (though I know that's not true from what band members have said). It would just be nice if they let the fans know at least a little to what is going on. I mean even a photo in the studio or a tiny cryptic message would be good.

i'm glad you know radiohead so well.

art is art and it is made in different ways. some people take their time others work better with deadlines. the albums that radiohead tend to rush at the end tend to be the ones that nearly rip them apart.

every band is different, it is pointless comparing the speed of writing. phil selway has his solo album coming out, thom has had atoms for peace and solo gigs alongside his djing and saving the world campaign, jonny wrote some symphonies for the bbc which he premiered the other month. it isn't all about radiohead these days.

you are far too impatient and presume far too much. even if they are dicking around whatever they want to do is fine. they have far surpassed led zeppelin with their talents.

I didn't claim I know Radiohead well. That's an irrelevant point. You can wait and make excuses for them if you want; I choose not to do that.

And Radiohead being more musically talented than Zeppelin is simply an opinion.

it is up to the band what information they release to the fans. there is a fuckload of music around, if you can't wait for one band to release an album and so resort to making claims that they are wasting time when you have no idea what is going on you have no place telling me i'm making excuses for them. we have to wait, it's as simple as that. my theories are based on as much guesswork as yours. but even if they are dicking around then that's that and there's nowt you can do about it. after all the amazingness they have created i think it is fair enough to let them release it in the way they want to.

and yes i know it is an opinion. obviously it is. everything is when it comes to taste. just like when you say radiohead are wasting time it is an opinion because we do not know what is happening.

Let's stop talking in circles. You think they can take their time; I think they're wasting time. No sense in continually re-stating our opinions in different ways.

i'm just surprised you want to take such an extreme view that they are wasting time, when you look at what they have been doing recently and the fact they are probably past their prime when it comes to writing music quickly since they've been going for over one and a half decades.

thom yorke has released albums in 2004, 2006, 2007 and it's now 2010. he is due one soon judging his past but art isn't and shouldn't be an obligation that you wheel out every X amount of years.

but ok, i'll leave it there.

It's nothing like the 60s where you will have bands put out 2/3 albums out in the same year!

Although in those times they didn't really tour like bands do these days as most of the money came from record sales

My friend Tim makes pedals.

You must be shitting me.

I'm guessing that was my friend Tim mispelling it.

i posted that on a pretty exclusive radiohead messageboard and everyone seems convinced it is legit. they recognise the way he types etc and are now super excited because there appears to be promise of a tour in the future.

Cool. Yeah my friend isn't the type of guy who would post made up stuff. I'm hoping he stays in touch with Ed! :P Especially if I go see them next tour whenever that is.

i believe it to be true. after all it's not a huge revelation. had it been made up it would have been far more revealing so as to stand out more and if it was false it's a lot of effort to put into something which doesn't tell us an awful lot. it's just good to hear that he is happy and there are plans for a tour in the pipeline.

is bjaiken pissed that they are fucking around with pedals for too long, thinking too far ahead with tours and taking the time to write emails instead of simply recording to his own strict deadline which radiohead aren't even aware of?

radioheadnews

Ed O'Brien: New Radiohead album hopefully to be released later THIS year.

got this from twitter!!

hopefully it is truth.

fucking time waster

GET OFF TWITTER!

good news. looking forward to it.

yeah, a waste of time, i got rid of it in not even 3 weeks!

You're right. I'm sure there was no time for that over the last 3.5 years. Obviously, no one in Radiohead cares what I think. It's simply a discussion on a discussion board.
