Black Rose
Right, it will be interesting to see the political reaction. Odds are you'll see people calling for an increase in Norway's participation in NATO and % of their GDP that goes to military/police spending. Norway is one of the few Western countries that is actually running a surplus (at least for now), mostly thanks to their oil exports. And also for saying no to the EU ;)
Darlene_Ihnfsa
It's most likely not an attack by Islamic extremists, plus VG never published the cartoons as far as I know. I'm betting on nationalists. press here said yihadists said they did that, but norwegian police said it must be anti-system behind it. so awful, RIP :(

ainsley
I feel dead inside. I have cried so much today and I just can not believe what has happened. And you know what? A couple hours before all this shit happened I was thinking about how happy I am to live in Norway, because nothing ever happens here. I had lots of friends at Utøy, they all managed to get to safety though, miraculously. I have a hard time dealing with all of this, I can't believe it. One of my friends apparently had someone die in his arms. I just,..I feel like I can't breathe properly. I'm definitely not going to be able to sleep tonight. It's just all so scary, why is this happening? Our prime minister Jens Stoltenberg looked so shaken up on TV when he was interviewed. I don't know how I'm going to be able to shake this feeling off me. I feel terrible. All my love and thoughts go out to the ones who lost someone in these terrible events, and to the people who were injured and hurt because of all this. We, Norway, are a proud nation and I know we'll be able to get back up on our feet soon, but right now we are all in shock.
AdrianaRM
I got through this terrible news from the internet since here in my country for some reason it is not really broadcasted on TV, but well it really should. I just can feel sorry for everything that happened as Norway is such a peaceful country with no apparent reason to deserve this and hope everything's gonna be fixed cause it will soon! Norway is a very strong nation and I believe it'll get through this in the best of ways. Get united and stay strong Norway! :)
i'maveryneatMonster.'
Ah, sorry guys. And I'm very sorry you feel that way Ainsley, but hopefully this is a one time thing and it will be back to normal soon.

Saffire
In online debates he makes his mark as a well-read, and one with strong opinions about Norwegian politics. He promotes a very conservative opinions, which he also called nationalist. He expresses himself strongly opposed to multiculturalism - that cultural differences can live together in a community. He has had many posts on the site Document.no, an Islam-critical site that publishes news and commentary. In one of the posts he states that politics today no longer revolves around socialism against capitalism, but that the fight is between nationalism and internationalism. He expressed clear support for the nationalist mindset. He also commented on the Swedish news articles, where he makes it clear that he believes the media have failed by not being "NOK" Islam-critical. http://www.zerohedge.com/article/oslo-shooter-profiled-anders-behring-breivik-32-nationalist-hated-islam
ainsley
^^ I can't look at his face. some kids were interviewed on tv and one of the girls said that he just walked around calmly and just shot everyone down. he was just very calm and cold. I can't believe this. She freaking saw 10 of her friends get shot and killed right next to her by that man.
chuck kottke
Sounds like he is a complete sociopath or a psychopath, unable to empathize with others. Frustrated, or unemployed, or radicalized by extremist beliefs and hawkers of those beliefs, the end result is extremely tragic and traumatic. My heart goes out to you, Ainsley.
The Final Track
I just got home. 80 dead. I have no words. Still haven't heard back from two people at Utøya...
Saffire
Notice the way elites use this incident. People who advocate localized sovereignty (nationalists) will be marginalized, and you'll see greater acceptance of centralization of power. We saw it after the McVeigh bombing here in the US. Also, it should be really interesting to see if the media are allowed much access to this guy or his family. Will he be treated as a terrorist? Or given a fair trial? Lots of interesting questions... The Final Track
I honestly don't think so many Norwegian's have hated a man since Vidkun Quisling. Don't think he'll have time to be brought to trial before somebody gets him, though. edit: Thanks, Chuck.
chuck kottke
The sense of waiting to see if someone is alright after a tragedy is a long wait. I recall the wait to hear news about a shipwreck here; it was a long wait, sad news at the end..... "Does any man know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours." it still brings tears to my eyes, I feel for your loss.
The Final Track
The waiting is horrible, I'm sorry that it turned out like it did for you. Just heard that the older one of the two (they're brothers) is in the hospital, but I'm not sure.

Sorry to hear that one brother is in the hospital, but at least he is still alive. The other brother, did he make it out alright?

nancyk58
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/ 23 July 2011 Last updated at 04:34 GMT Scores killed in Norway attacks At least 80 people died when a gunman opened fire at a Norwegian island youth camp, police say, hours after a deadly bomb attack in Oslo. The 32-year-old man who shot at least 80 people on the island Utøya close to Oslo has a license to carry one automatic weapon and 1 pistol/handgun of the type GLOCK. Many severely injured are under treatment. But I still wonder if there is a connection between the bombing in Oslo and the shootings on the island. My heart goes out to the victims and their families and to all affected by this tragedy.

Either licensure is ineffective, or perhaps only police and the military should have guns. If the latter, then you've got a benevolent dictatorship and the ballot box is merely a suggestion box.
