Paradise is amazing

Featured Replies

I love this song, the intro, the chorus, the vocals, the guitar riff at the end (although I wish we got more johnny!) I feel so happy inside listening to this song.. I'm very excited for the rest of the album cause I think we are going to get a lot of different sounds.. I'm also very happy that I'm not the only one who thinks it's a very good song! We love you Coldplay!

We might not be many on the forum, but I love it and I posted on other threads too. It´s a wonderful wonderful song! Love the violins, the bass, the lyrics, the beat, even Jonny 3-note riff. Every time I hear it , I am seriously in heaven

I was pretty surprised to see so many negative comments/reactions to Paradise.

I bloody LOVE IT and think it is amazing. For what it's worth, I really hated ETIAW when it was released into the world, but now I love it - so for those who are maybe a little disappointed, don't despair.

I honestly think - and I speak as someone who fell in love with the band when I heard "Trouble" on the television in 2000 - this album will perhaps stand as their 2nd best behind AROBTTH

1) AROBTTH

2) Mylo Xyloto

3) Parachutes

3) Viva La Vida

5) X & Y

Yes took me a while to like Every Tear too. For some reason I could not really hear the beat (well now I can after trying expensive earphones hehe), so it did not catch me until several listenings later. So absolutely give Paradise a chance even if you immediately dislike it. I have a feeling MX will be my favorite album, but also because it´s so close to my heart at this particular time in my life. Those are the albums that really stay with you: those that mean something and help you through rough times and assist you in celebrating great times

I definitely agree with this... unlike most Coldplay songs, in my opinion there is so much going on in Paradise, it's like a beautiful mess. I mean, songs like Viva are beautiful in a simple way; this song is beautiful in a much different way.

The first few listens are just getting a feel for the song, but I think once you really listen to it a lot, take it piece by piece, you can really see the beauty in it. The first few times I listened I even overlooked Jonny's riff. I think the heavy/sudden bass is really distracting to all other parts of the song, in a good way (again, all in my opinion :D )

Anyway, I've been listening nonstop to it today. Had it on repeat in the morning and in my car, and even skipped lunch to head to my car to listen to it. I felt like a loner  But it was totally worth it

The mark of a true music lover: to choose the music, even if it means being a loner hehe Loving it! :)

I hear new layers on this song everytime...the violins, the piano, wow. Still crazy about it!

nice song good job coldplay the chorus part the oh ohohohs its the best

So it happened to me again - it was the same with ETIAW. I loved the song on first listen and came running here to share the love, only to be dismayed by the barrage of negativity. It doesn't matter to me, I still love Paradise and think it's an amazing piece of work.

If you really want to appreciate the melody, here's a piano cover done by one of our Coldplayers (who always seems to be able to cover a Coldplay song within hours of its release - he's awesome).

After hearing Paradise in all of its glory, I don´t really dig the sparse piano cover, but thanks for posting the link!

Yep, agree with this thread. Paradise is indeed amazing, IMHO!

The only issue I had with the preview was the beat in the back, which reminded of those formulaic ballads sang by starlets who's only jobs were to "sing" and look pretty, while a machine did the rest. However, it's obvious that doesn't apply to Coldplay, even if the sound is similar.

I loved the song pretty much on my first listen of it. The violin/wall of sound bits created such an incredible atmosphere, and as with pretty much every Coldplay song, they managed to instantly create a mood that fit the situation described in the song perfectly. From the very start with the violin bits I can tell it's about a valiant struggle against some dark force (the notes sounded like a theme for a hero or something), which is clearly what the song is about - escape from a world that that the heroine rejects, whether physically or through dreams.

There's a test I have for some of the songs I love. If I can listen to the song and stare off into the distance and feel like I'm a character in a movie about overcoming adversity or something, then it's good. Most Coldplay songs do that, and Paradise does that Awesomely.

Honestly, I understand all the complaints about sounding pop or selling out or bad lyrics (I don't agree, obviously, but it's all good), but I think that's picking at pieces that are meant to be a whole. Just taking this song by itself and forgetting about any real world context, then IMHO it's absolutely beautiful; it creates a world of its own and I get lost in it.

FFS, X&Y as their worst?

Whatevs.

Now that I feel this song does have a deeper story to it than initially observable under the 'pop' skin I can say that this indeed a great song, sent a chill down my spine when I just listened to it with the story in mind and took in all of its layers.

The song is really amazing, I absolutely love the part when Jonny's guitar kicks in and then Chris sings along to it. Absolutely spine chilling.

I think it is being judged by ETIAW's standards, which (as we know) most people on here didn't like!

yea dont agree with that.

Some reasons about why Paradise is amazing

Here are some interesting opinions I've read and some conclusions:

I don't think Paradise is so bad. There's just so much girth to the song, and we don't yet know how it fits into the whole scheme that is Mylo Xyloto.

The song is good, but I think the instrumentation says so much more than those lyrics do. Perhaps they know that the lyrics are cheesy. But the lyrics are one layer of many, many musical layers (a Coldplay onion!) that create a bold atmosphere; the whole of which is required to really grasp the story of what the song is trying to say.

When that thunderous synth comes in and the band starts chanting "It should be Para, para, paradise" it doesn't sound like an attempt at a sing-along chorus. It sounds cynical, like the band is angrily aware of how ridiculous it sounds. If you read the lyrics out of context it almost looks like the words to a school-yard chant, and the band sings it like one. The repetitive tale of this girl sounds like a cautionary one rather than an inspirational one.

Coldplay released this song because they felt that it didn't sound like a typical lead single, and I think they're definitely right. I'm baffled that people are dismissing this as a poppy cash-grab. This song is angry, haunting and vaguely cynical. It's accomplishes with swirling violins, hip-hop beats and thundering synths what Move to Mars did with quiet piano and enebriated vocals. This isn't the Coldplay we knew in 2000. This is a creative mess. And its supposed to be. Its one of the most interesting songs they've ever done.

This is how I picture the first part of the album:

Mylo Xyloto: Intro to album/story

Hurts Like Heaven: Intro to male lead (Boy with a spray can soul, very edgy self assured)

Paradise: Intro to female lead (Girl who dreamed of paradise despite oppression, very unsure of self)

Charlie Brown: Boy (HLH) goes to meet girl (Paradise) realizes his own short comings

Us Against the World: Boy and girl meet, vow that though they are different they will be together

M.M.I.X.: Yeah... no idea, going by relationship standard this song would be where they have sex so.... yeah

ETIAW: The happy celebration that they are together, time passes with them together and they lived happily ever after.... (Bloody Question Mark)

1. "The instrumentation says so much more than those lyrics do". Yes, this song have a great instrumentation, great powerful bass line, nice pop-hip-hop drums rythm, wonderful piano and a good guitar riff (maybe a little late in the song). Synth is simple awesome, full complements with the whole instrumentation.

2. This song have a heavenly intro, one of the best in Coldplay songs. Also, have a great end, with some pretty change on progression of chords.

3. "If you read the lyrics out of context it almost looks like the words to a school-yard chant, and the band sings it like one. The repetitive tale of this girl sounds like a cautionary one rather than an inspirational one."

Yes, the "para, para, paradise" phrase maybe can be anoying, but it's part of the song context and her story. "Perhaps they know that the lyrics are cheesy"... "is a layer of many, the whole of which is required to really grasp the story of what the song is trying to say."

This lyrics aren't good and deep like normal Coldplay songs, but they are like "The repetitive tale of this girl", a girl who has the role of the main character of the song. The lyrics narrate the feeling she has, and how that feels is about the concept of the album. Graffiti, street people, reality into it, dreamy boy and girl about the 80' season, and many others concept associated with whole concept. That's why it's so cheesy. It's not good. But it fits with the role of this song.

4. "Paradise: Intro to female lead (Girl who dreamed of paradise despite oppression, very unsure of self". As I said, Paradise is part of the concept of history that this album is telling us. Accept it as such, expects the album to criticize. "We don't yet know how it fits into the whole scheme that is Mylo Xyloto."

5. "This is a creative mess."

If after this review you still can't stop hating the song, it's no remedy, at least, to see some positive things objectively have this song. But well, it remains being subjective the way you see it.

The instrumentals are very good indeed. Not a fresh creation, but still very good.

So the last 15 seconds are.

That's why my Paradise version has the intro and, before the synths rule over, the outro. Final lenght: 37'' or so. That's what I can get.

Awesome collection of opinions, thanks!

I actually agree with the cynical/creative mess one- the song does seem very self-aware, and the guitar solo/piano chord progression at the end makes me think that they're deliberately trying to show this, as these parts are deliberately a bit 'off-kilter' with the rest of the song. That's why I love the song!

If anything, this makes me really excited for the album, I think it's going to flow really well!

it creates a world of its own and I get lost in it.

I feel the same. I always go "here we goooooo!" at the beginning of the track hehe I really feel it´s a journey and I am just whisked away somewhere beautiful for about 5 minutes :)

Am I the only one who thinks the story is truly touching? I can really feel for this woman, who once dreamed of a beautiful world and then was crashed by reality, but she somehow still finds the strength to keep dreaming and maintain the hope that there will be a new brighter day...I can imagine so many people feeling like this in the world now, in different situations, whether it´s personal strife, war or just the darkness life sometimes brings.

Everyone should stop saying COLDPLAY are Sellouts. They are doing what they want to do. Ok. I was 7 when AROBTTH came out, and was already a fan back then. I LOVED them then and I still live them now. COLDPLAY is for everyone. Not for just the NEW or tue OLD fans (though I am an old fan). I think Paradise is amazing and I absolutely love ETIAW AND HLH AND CB AND POC AND MM AND MTM AND UATW. AMAZING. I was the one who asked the oracle about Rihanna and POC(I didn't know Coz we don't have The Sun, here) and they said it's good. I believe that. MX WILL BE THEIR ACHTUNG BABY. And will be better than Achtung Baby. COLDPLAY TO THE DEATH!!!!

I really must say this. Guy´s bass has not been praised enough! It´s bombastic!!!!

I am amongst the few who are truly touched by the lyrics...oh well :) To each his/her own response

AGREE WITH EVERY GOOD THING SAID IN THIS FORUM!!! at first I was like... It seems messy. Then at my second listen, I was blown away. People don't like it because they haven't reached a level of sophistication. Chris Martin is genius. This song is FANTASTIC!!
